Chapter 331. Their Unborn Child
Chapter 331. Their Unborn Child
Kevin kept staring at her stomach. A frightening possibility slowly took shape in his mind. It was already far too obvious, but he still did not dare to accept it. When Helena kept calling the baby her child, something inside Kevin’s head finally broke apart completely.
Helena was pregnant.
There was his child inside her.
The child he had never even known about was being kicked right before his eyes, and he could do nothing but watch.
Kevin shook his head again and again like a man who had lost his mind. If Helena had been the only one there, he already would not have been able to bear it. But now there was another life as well, a small life that was being taken away because of his stubbornness before it had even had the chance to open its eyes and see the colors of this world.
That was a child who carried both his blood and Helena’s blood…
Kevin suddenly grabbed his head with both hands. His fingers dug deep into his hair, almost scraping against his scalp. He pulled at his own hair with all his strength, as if he wanted to tear the skin from his head along with it.
“Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!!!”
The howl burst violently from his throat. Kevin bent over on the tiled floor, his whole body starting to twitch and convulse. He screamed until his throat felt torn open, until his voice broke down and turned into dry, rough, broken sounds that no longer sounded like words.
But the kicks in the video still kept coming down. Helena was still using her own body to shield the baby. Blood began to flow out from beneath her.
The moment that red color appeared, Kevin suddenly went completely silent. His eyes opened so wide that they looked frightening. Kevin stared at the blood running down between Helena’s legs.
He only felt as though his own heart was also bleeding badly inside his chest.
“Stop hitting her… I’m begging you, please stop hitting her…”
Kevin began muttering again and again for them to stop. In the end, the words all ran together until no one could hear them clearly anymore. He kept muttering while shaking his head, looking like someone trying to hypnotize himself into believing that if he begged enough times, everything in front of him would finally stop.
Kevin suddenly felt his chest tighten hard. His heart gave one heavy beat, then started beating in a wild and broken rhythm. The strong taste of blood immediately rushed into his mouth. He bent forward, and then spat out another large mouthful of blood.
The blood splashed across the phone screen. Helena’s face and her bleeding stomach were instantly covered by a thick red stain.
Kevin panicked so badly that he nearly lost his mind. He hurriedly wiped the screen with his sleeve, rubbing it again and again while low groans kept coming from his mouth.
He was afraid that his own blood would cover Helena and hide her from his sight. He was afraid that she would disappear. But every time he tried to wipe the screen clean, his hands shook so violently that he could barely control them.
More blood kept rising into his throat. Kevin coughed hard and could not stop. Every time he coughed, his whole body curled forward. Blood flowed from the corner of his mouth, ran down over his chin, and slowly dyed the whole front of his shirt red.
He looked like a man who was about to die, but Kevin did not care at all. At that moment, he only wished that the person truly dying was him instead.
If he could trade places with her, he would willingly lie in that warehouse in Helena’s place. He would willingly take every kick, every blow, every bit of pain and humiliation that she had already suffered. He would bear all of it for her without hesitation, as long as Helena and the child inside her could be spared.
But he could not trade places with her. All he could do was watch helplessly as she was beaten, tortured, and tormented in front of his eyes.
That helplessness drove Kevin mad all over again. He began slamming his head down against the tiled floor. A terrible-looking wound quickly appeared on his forehead, and blood ran down along the bridge of his nose.
Kevin still did not stop. There was only one crazed thought left inside his head: if he could make himself hurt badly enough, then Helena and the baby would not have to hurt anymore.
No one knew how much time had passed before Galvin walked over with a frown and grabbed Kevin by the shoulders. He could not allow Kevin to die inside his villa.
Kevin struggled wildly, trying to shove Galvin away. But there was barely any strength left in his body. He was no match at all for Galvin, even though Galvin himself had already been weakened badly by his cancer.
Kevin’s head hurt as if it were about to split open. Helena’s crying still filled his ears. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her face again. He saw the blood beneath her body. He saw her using her thin, weak, fragile body to protect the child inside her.
Then, right before Galvin’s eyes, the hair on both sides of Kevin’s temples slowly began to lose its black color. Strand by strand, it gradually turned gray and white, becoming a mixed salt-and-pepper shade.
In only a very short amount of time, Kevin’s entire head of hair had turned completely white.
Kevin’s face had already been swollen and covered in dark bruises and blood. Now, with his hair turning whiter by the second, he looked as though he had suddenly aged several decades in the space of only a few moments.
Galvin stared at the change in Kevin and froze for a moment. He had never thought that someone’s hair could really turn completely white in such a short amount of time. But after thinking about it, perhaps it was not so strange after all. Back then, after he had watched Ellie jump into the sea and everyone had told him that she was already dead, he had also felt as though his heart had stopped beating. If he had not needed to keep Ansel from becoming an orphan with no one left to depend on, perhaps he would have died at that time as well.
But that was because he loved Ellie.
What about Kevin? Did Kevin love Helena?
Suddenly, the sleeve of Galvin’s shirt was pulled downward. Kevin’s eyes were opened wide as he stared straight at him. Fresh blood was still spilling from his mouth, yet he forced himself to push out every word with great difficulty.
