Chapter 330. His Mind Unravels
Chapter 330. His Mind Unravels
Kevin squeezed harder and harder. His face, already bruised and darkened, quickly turned a deep red. His breathing was cut off. Countless black spots began to appear in front of his eyes, spreading across his vision.
But this pain was still far too light. It could not be compared with what Helena was suffering in the video.
A hand suddenly grabbed Kevin’s wrist and forcefully pulled his hand away from his neck.
Galvin looked at him coldly, but Kevin gave him no reaction at all. He immediately turned his eyes back to the screen, as though looking away for even one second would mean betraying Helena all over again.
Inside the warehouse, the chaotic sounds continued without stopping.
Helena had cried until she had almost completely lost her voice. Only broken, cracked sounds still came from her throat. Her body was slowly going limp, but every now and then it still jerked and trembled from the pain and fear.
Kevin began smashing his fist against the tiled ground. One heavy thud after another echoed through the garden. His knuckles were already torn open, yet they struck the hard tiles again and again, splitting the skin and flesh even further. Blood splattered onto the fallen flower petals lying nearby.
Kevin seemed unable to feel any pain at all. He needed something, anything, to fight against the helplessness that was tearing him apart from the inside.
But even though the blood had already stained a large patch of the ground red, the pain inside Kevin still did not ease at all. It packed itself into every part of his chest, pressed down hard against his stomach, and then rushed back up into his head, slowly twisting his thoughts until his mind began to lose its proper shape.
He could no longer tell what belonged to the video and what was happening in the present. Every time Helena cried out in pain, Kevin felt as though she were calling right beside his ear, close enough for him to hear her breath.
Kevin began scratching at the screen with his fingernails. He wanted to tear away the layer of glass, crawl inside the phone, and drag her out with his own hands.
His nails scraped against the glass and made a sharp, piercing sound. One of his fingernails lifted away from the flesh, and blood ran down his finger, but Kevin still did not stop.
“Helena…”
He called her name in a very soft voice, completely different from the wild screams that had come from him before.
At this moment, there was nothing left in his voice except the panic of a man who was about to lose the only thing in his life that still mattered to him.
“I’m here…”
Kevin pressed his forehead against the phone.
“Look at me…”
Galvin stood not far away, silently watching Kevin slowly lose what remained of his reason. There was not even a trace of pity for Kevin in his heart, because the only person who deserved pity at this moment was Helena.
If Kevin had only known that Helena had been kidnapped and hurt, he would have suffered, and he would have regretted everything he had done. But perhaps he still would never have truly understood even a small part of what she had gone through.
Galvin wanted Kevin to see it with his own eyes. He wanted him to look directly at the consequences of all the stubborn, forceful, and unreasonable things he had done to Helena.
Kevin was still staring fixedly at the screen.
A few seconds later, he suddenly began to laugh.
At first, the sound was very faint, almost no more than a breath escaping from his throat. But little by little, the laughter grew louder, and louder still.
Kevin tilted his head back and looked up at the sky. Tears were still streaming endlessly down his face, yet the corners of his mouth curved upward in a twisted smile.
He laughed loudly in the quiet garden. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth and flowed between his lips, making his laughter sound rough and wheezing.
His whole body shook violently while his tears continued to fall without stopping. After laughing for a while, Kevin suddenly bent forward again and began sobbing uncontrollably.
At this moment, there was not even the slightest bit of pride left in him. His shoulders jerked hard again and again. His cries broke apart, mixed with the sound of his difficult, uneven breathing. Kevin cried like a child who had been abandoned, but even he knew that he had no right to think of himself as the one who had been left behind.
The person who had truly been abandoned was Helena. He had abandoned her a long time ago. Even when they had lived under the same roof, she had always been alone.
Kevin crawled toward Galvin. His blood-covered hand grabbed tightly onto the hem of Galvin’s shirt. He wanted to ask Galvin whether Helena was all right. He wanted to tell Galvin to take him to see Helena. He would find the best doctors and make sure every wound on Helena’s body was treated and healed.
But every word that came from his throat was confused and broken. All that came out were unclear sounds like “ah” and “uh,” sounds that no one could understand.
The phone slipped from his hand and fell onto the ground, but the video inside it was still playing.
Then Kevin suddenly heard those men mention the word “pregnant.”
A loud ringing filled his head for several seconds. He felt as though his entire mind had turned completely blank, leaving nothing but a sheet of white.
“No! That’s impossible! It can’t be like that! It definitely isn’t what I think!”
Kevin felt the whole world in front of him twist and turn out of shape.
He could not make a single sound. His eyes only opened wider as he stared down at the phone lying on the ground. On the screen, he saw Helena curling her body in on itself, trying with everything she had to protect her stomach.
Then he watched helplessly as a man lifted his leg and kicked her hard in the belly. Helena screamed. Her scream came straight through the phone and struck Kevin’s ears, making his head hurt sharply, as though something pointed had gone right through it.
