Chapter 64
The neon lights of Whispers nightclub cast a vivid glow over the bustling crowd inside. The thumping bass of the music pulsed through the floors, reverberating in my chest as I navigated through the throngs of people, each one oblivious to the storm brewing beneath the surface. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and alcohol, a heady mix that masked the tension simmering just below the façade of celebration.
Whispers had always been a sanctuary for us, a place where we could conduct business under the guise of revelry. Tonight, however, it was poised to become a battleground—a confrontation that had been brewing for months between the Gotti family and mine. The Gottis were growing too bold, their ambitions threatening the delicate balance of power we had fought so hard to maintain.
I moved towards the VIP section, where the real power players gathered, cloaked in shadows and secrets. As I approached, I saw our men stationed strategically around the perimeter, their eyes sharp and their hands ready. They knew the stakes tonight. Failure was not an option.
The Gottis arrived in a show of force, their entourage led by Riccardo Gotti himself. He was a tall, imposing figure with a cold, calculating gaze that missed nothing. The room seemed to be tense as he entered, conversations hushed and eyes turning to watch the inevitable clash.
"Rossi," Riccardo greeted me with a tight smile, his voice dripping with feigned cordiality. "I have been looking forward to seeing you again."
"I haven’t," I replied, matching his tone. "Let's cut to the chase, Riccardo. We both know why we're here. You’ve been making some silly moves at us.”
Riccardo's smile widened, but his eyes remained hard. "Silly? We’ve been making calculated moves.” He replied with pride. “Your recent moves, in contrast, have been... troublesome for us. Encroaching on our territory and poaching our clients. It's becoming a problem."
I leaned back in my chair, exuding calm confidence. "Business is business, Riccardo. If you're losing ground, perhaps it's time to reconsider your strategy."
The subtle threat hung in the air between us, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Riccardo’s smile faltered, and for a moment, the mask slipped, revealing the ruthless man beneath.
"We both know there's more at stake here than just business," he said, leaning forward. "This city isn't big enough for both of us, Rossi. It's time to decide who truly holds the power."
Before I could respond, he and his men had their guns pointed at us, and I and my men did the same.
The air in the room got thicker, suddenly on the brink of chaos. I knew this was it—the moment when whispers of discontent would erupt into open conflict. I met Riccardo’s gaze, a silent understanding passing between us. There would be no backing down now.
The first shot rang out, shattering the silence. My men moved swiftly, returning fire with lethal precision, the air thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and blood.
I dove behind a table, pulling my gun and returning fire. The Gottis had planned this, counting on the element of surprise to tip the scales in their favor. But they had underestimated our resolve and our willingness to fight for what was ours. Especially in my territory.
Gotti's men were relentless; their attacks were coordinated and brutal. But we held our ground, the tables and walls of Whispers becoming makeshift shields in the battle. The room was filled with the deafening roar of gunfire. It’s a good thing the club was not opened that night due to the repairs we were making to the damages the Gottis had caused.
In the midst of the chaos, I saw her standing near the entrance, her eyes wide with fear. She shouldn't have been here, not tonight. My heart lurched, fear for her safety overpowering my focus on the battle. I signaled to one of my men, shouting above the noise.
"Get her out of here! Now!"
He nodded, moving quickly to reach her. But before he could, a figure emerged from the shadows, a gun aimed directly at her. Time seemed to slow, every second stretching into an eternity. I raised my gun, aiming at the threat, but the angle was wrong and the distance was too great.
A shot rang out, and for a moment, I feared the worst. But then I saw her, unscathed, the would-be attacker crumpling to the floor. One of my men had gotten to him first, saving her life.
Relief surged through me, but it was short-lived. The battle raged on, each second a test of our resolve and strength. I knew we had to end this quickly to assert our dominance and send a clear message to the Gottis.
With a surge of adrenaline, I moved through the fray, my men at my side. We pushed back the Gottis; our retaliation was swift and merciless. The tide turned in our favor, with the invaders retreating under the onslaught.
Finally, as the dust settled and the last echoes of gunfire faded, the room fell silent. The Gottis were beaten back. Riccardo met my gaze one last time before disappearing into the night. ”This isn’t over, Romano; I’ll be back.”
“Not if I get to you first, Gotti.”
Whispers, our sanctuary, had become a battlefield, a testament to the lengths we would go to protect our own. I turned to her, my heart heavy with the knowledge that this was just the beginning. The battle for power was far from over, and the stakes had never been higher. And I would fight with every ounce of my being to protect her and secure our future.
The Gottis were driven back, but I knew they wouldn't retreat without planning their next move.
The nightclub, once a symbol of our influence, now bore the scars of the battle—shattered glass, bullet holes, and bloodstains. I instructed my men to secure the area and care for the wounded, all while keeping a wary eye on the shadows. Trust was a luxury we couldn't afford.
Aurora stood nearby, her face pale but her eyes burning with a mix of fear and determination. The sight of her there, in the midst of the chaos, brought a fresh wave of resolve and also fear. I had to protect her at all costs. The realization that the Gottis might target her to get to me gnawed at my insides.
"Aurora," I said, walking over to her. "We need to get you somewhere safe. This isn't over."
She nodded, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "I know. I was so scared, Rossi,” she said, breaking down in tears. “They almost had me; if he had not shot him just in time, I might have been the one that ended up dead.”
"Shh, baby, I won’t let anything happen to you.” I said, wiping her tears, feeling my heart break seeing her in tears, and worse was that her statement was true.
“I don’t just want to stand by and do nothing. I won't just stand by and do nothing. If they come for me, I need to be prepared. Teach me to defend myself, Rossi, please."
I admired her courage, but the thought of her being used as a pawn in this deadly game was something I couldn't bear. "Hopefully they never get to you, and you don’t need to put to practice what you learn."
“Hopefully,” she replied quietly, and we just sat down there like that for a while with me cuddling her as she cried.
It’s been a few days since the attack, and everything has gone back to normal. The damaged items have been repaired at whispers, and sales at the launch of our new wines at Romano were booming, but that alone was not enough for me to be happy this Monday morning.
“So what are we going to do about them now? We really have to end this soon; if not, we will just keep on going back and forth with them.” Isabella stated.
“We need to kill the Gottis fast.” Luca added, his tone angry.
“Yes, it all needs to end before the end of the month. We’ve got two weeks to plan and execute the final blow. I want their businesses to crumble, to watch them fall before we put a gun to their heads." I was already feeling the satisfaction that I would get when the words became reality.
“We just need to find a way to keep Aurora away from this. It’s bad enough that they want her dead already, not just because she is her parent’s daughter, but now also because she’s with you, and you know Riccardo. He likes what is yours.” Luca said, and the thought angered me. I would not let him take Aurora. He has Leticia now; that should be enough for him.
“There’s no way in hell that I’m going to let him have Aurora; he can try getting anything else but her.”
“That’s why she needs to be protected at all costs." She’s just an innocent girl mixed into all of this; she doesn’t deserve to get hurt.”
“No one does Isabella; no one but the Gottis, and they deserve every single thing that will come their way. They will surely pay.”
"That’s the spirit, my brother,” Luca said, giving me a pat on the back.
“How’s Aurora holding up?” Isabella asked, and I sighed.
“She’s tired and scared. She just wants everything to end. She almost got shot to death; it traumatized her. I don’t think she’s over it.”
“It will be hard not to.” Isabella said she empathized with her.
“I just hope she does not experience it again. She wants to take fighting classes as well.”
“That’s good; she should be able to defend herself at least. I’m sure she must be feeling powerless in the whole situation.” Luca said, and I nodded.
“Yeah, it’s all going to end soon. We’re going to put the Gottis right where they belong. Six feet under.”
