Chapter 63

The afternoon sun streamed through the large windows of my office, casting a warm glow over my desk. I was sifting through emails and preparing for another busy day when an unexpected notification appeared on my screen. The subject line of the email was cryptic: "Truth about Rossi: Urgent."

My curiosity was piqued and my heart thudded with unease, so I clicked on the email. It was from an unknown sender, but as I read the contents, a chill ran down my spine.

Attached were several photographs. The first image showed Rossi, the man I had come to love and trust, holding a handgun. His expression was cold and focused, a stark contrast to the warmth and tenderness I had always seen in his eyes. The subsequent images were even more disturbing: scenes of violence and chaos, with people clearly hurt and suffering. The blood, the pain, the horror—it all felt like a nightmare come to life.

My hands shook as I scrolled through the photos. Each one was more damning than the last. And then there was the letter.

The text was blunt and brutal, penned by Ernesto:

"Your Prince Charming is not so charming after all. You think you know him, but you don’t. Rossi is as deadly as they come, involved in things you can't even begin to understand. Don't get too comfortable with him, because to him, you're just a pawn in his game. You think you’ve found your angel, but you’re with the devil himself.”

I felt as though the ground had shifted beneath me. The room spun, and I had to steady myself against the desk. Could this be real? I have it in the back of my head that Rossi might be a mafia boss, but I somehow hoped it wasn’t true. Everything pointed out that he was a mafia boss, but somehow I chose to be blind and deaf to it. Could the man who had shown me so much love and affection, who had been my rock and my confidant, be involved in such heinous activities as killing people?

The thought of him having left some children as orphans - just as I was - suddenly began to make my blood boil.

Desperation clawed at my insides as I tried to make sense of it all. I needed to confront him and hear his side of the story, but I also needed to protect myself. If any of this was true, I was in far deeper than I had ever imagined.

With trembling hands, I printed out the email and its attachments, tucking them into a folder. My mind was a whirlwind of fear, confusion, and betrayal as I made my way back home, where Rossi and I were staying.

Rossi had stayed home today because he had some issues to take care of. Lately, there have been a lot of issues he has been having to take care of at the club, so he has been spending most nights away from home. Before I entered the room, I could hear him having a conversation with someone on the phone.

“I don’t care what you do to him; get the information we need out of him, and if he won’t talk, then put an end to his life. That’s enough punishment for what he did at the club last night. Find the others involved fast; none of them should go unscathed.”

My knees went numb hearing the tone of his voice; he sounded different from Rossi, who was soft and gentle with me, and to be honest, it scared me. He ran his hands through his hair angrily while muttering curse words, and then he turned around. He looked angry, but after seeing me, his expression shifted into worry.

"Hey, when did you get here?" he asked, coming toward me with a fake smile.

I held up the folder, my heart pounding. "I got an email today. Pictures of you with weapons. People hurt. And a letter from Ernesto, "

Rossi's face paled, and for a moment, I saw something dark and unreadable flash in his eyes. "Let me see," he said quietly.

I handed him the folder, watching as he looked through the contents. His jaw clenched, and his hands tightened around the papers. When he finally looked up, his eyes were hard, but there was a flicker of something else—fear, perhaps?

"These pictures are taken out of context," he said. "Yes, I've been in dangerous situations, but it's not what it looks like. I can explain everything."

"Can you?" I demanded. "Because right now, all I see is a man I thought I knew, but who might be a complete stranger. A dangerous stranger."

Rossi took a deep breath, stepping closer. "I swear to you, I've always tried to protect you. My involvement in these things... it's complicated, but I had my reasons. You need to trust me."

"How can I?" I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes. "How can I trust anything you say after seeing these? You kill people like it’s a game, Rossi.”

He reached out, gently taking my hands in his. "Please, let me explain everything.” Taking a deep breath, Rossi began. "I know this is difficult for you, and I'm sorry it’s come to this. There are things about my life that I've kept hidden, not because I wanted to deceive you, but because I wanted to protect you."

"Protect me from what, Rossi? From who you really are?"

He nodded, his eyes reflecting the fire's glow. "Yes. From the truth: I come from a family with deep roots in... organized crime. The Mafia. My father, his father before him—they were all involved. It's a world I was born into, a world I couldn’t escape, no matter how much I tried."

I felt a chill run down my spine. The suspicions I had, Emilia’s words, the moments when things didn’t quite add up—they all crystallized into a harsh reality. "So, it's true. You're part of the mafia."

Rossi's gaze met mine, unflinching. "I am. I'm not just part of it—I lead it. When my father passed away, I took over. It was either that or watching everything fall apart and seeing my family torn to pieces by rivals. I had no choice."

I shook my head, trying to process the weight of his words. "But why didn't you tell me? Why keep this from me? Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to be kept in the dark about something like this?“

"I wanted to keep you safe. The less you knew, the less involved you were, and the safer you would be. I didn’t want this life to touch you."

"But it has," I said. "It has touched me, Rossi. And now I don't know who to trust. I’ve become so involved in this that I don’t think I’d ever escape it.”

Rossi's grip tightened on my hand, and his eyes filled with a desperation I had never seen before. "Don’t say that; I’m going to put an end to the Gotti’s; they won’t have to bother you anymore. I didn’t mean to drag you further into this; all I’ve ever wanted to do was protect you.”

"But you have dragged me into it, Rossi. Whether you wanted to or not, I'm part of this now. And I don't know if I can handle it."

He pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry. If I could change things, I would. But please, believe me when I say I will do everything in my power to keep you safe."

I clung to him, my heart torn between love and fear, trust and betrayal. The man I had fallen for was a complex tapestry of light and shadow, and the path ahead was uncertain. But as I rested in his embrace, I knew one thing for sure: I couldn't walk away from him—not now. Not when the truth had finally come to light.

"I need time," I said softly, pulling back to look into his eyes. "Time to process all of this. But I won't leave. I need to understand more and know the full truth before I decide what to do."

Rossi nodded. "Take all the time you need. I’m here for you, always. And I promise, from now on, no more secrets."

The weight of his revelations hangs heavily between us. My mind was a whirl of memories and emotions, each one replaying with a newfound clarity that made my heart ache.

Emilia's voice echoed in my mind when she joked about him being a mafia boss, but there had been a hint of seriousness in her tone. I had laughed it off, not wanting to entertain the idea. Now, her words felt like a chilling premonition.

I thought back to my first day on the job, the day Rossi pointed a gun at me. The shock, the fear—it had all seemed so surreal, like a bad dream. At the time, I had convinced myself it was a mistake, a misunderstanding. But now, with the truth laid bare, that moment has taken on a terrifying new significance. It was my first glimpse into the dangerous world he inhabited.

The day after, I saw him again, this time with bloodstains on his shirt. I had brushed it off too eagerly to avoid the darker implications. But now, the image of him standing there, bloodied and composed, played over and over in my mind. It was a stark reminder of the violence that seemed to follow him.

Everything started to fall into place. The late-night phone calls, the secretive meetings, the guarded looks. There had been so many signs and so many red flags that I had chosen to ignore. I had been afraid to believe the truth, afraid to shatter the perfect image I had built of him. My heart had led me to blind myself to the reality that was now glaringly obvious.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing thoughts. "That day, when you pointed a gun at me—I should have seen it then. The day after, when you had blood on your shirt, I convinced myself it was nothing. But it wasn't nothing, was it?"

Rossi sighed, running a hand through his hair. "No, it wasn’t. That day, I had to deal with a situation that got out of hand. It was messy. I didn't want you to see that side of my life."

"Why didn't you just tell me?" I asked. "Why keep me in the dark? I asked if you had anything to do with what happened to the Gottis too at that time, and you lied to my face, Rossi. Why?”

"Because I love you," he replied. "I wanted to be perfect for you, to be good enough for you. I also feared that you wouldn’t be able to handle it all and leave, and I didn’t want you to. But I see now that hiding the truth only makes things worse."

Tears welled up in my eyes as I grappled with the enormity of it all. "I was afraid to believe what was right in front of me. I wanted to trust you and believe in the life we were building. But now... I don't know what to believe."

Rossi reached out, gently wiping away my tears. "I understand. And I know I have a lot to make up for. But I promise you, from this moment on, there will be no more lies, no more secrets. You deserve the truth, and I’m ready to give it to you, whatever the cost. Whatever you want to know.”

I looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of deceit. But all I saw was a man who was as broken and afraid as I was. A man who was trying to hold onto the love we shared, even as the darkness threatened to tear us apart.

"I need time," I said softly. "Time to process everything and decide what to do next. But I won’t run away. Not yet."

Rossi nodded, his relief palpable. "Take all the time you need. I’ll be here, waiting. And I’ll do whatever it takes to earn your trust back."
