Chapter 37 37
Phoebe~~
“She visited her father, so I'm not sure what she is up to this time,” the slave mistress said to me, and I exhaled, staring at the blank space. “His father helped the alpha king in the past, but had refused to join the pack since they were staying in a remote land and he was a beta.”
I supported my jaw with my palm, listening to the woman. Five days ago, Vivien visited her father, and since then, she had barely left her room. The times we met, she pretended not to see me, and it wasn't like she was useful to me.
Going to the club these few days had made me generate enough money, and I had told Angeline that the drug was slowly finishing. She promised that she would get me another before the bottle is empty, and I couldn't wait to generate more money again.
I then recalled the lady who wore a mask that always stared at me each night after I was done with my client. I explained to the mistress about it, and she only said, “If it bothers you, then unveil her mask and see what she looks like.” I almost choked on my laugh when she said that, but I covered my mouth.
After spending some time with the slave mistress and then Angeline, I headed back to the palace building, aiming to go see Knox and at least spend a little time with him. Since I got busy at the club, I barely saw him, and he hadn't bothered me, but how my wolf whimpered all the time I thought about him, I guessed he had been missing me so much.
I was about to ring the doorbell when I began hearing murmurs from the room. I enabled my alpha hearing ability, so I could hear so well what they were discussing and if it was about me. But they were talking about Vivienne and her father.
“He refused his daughter to back down when she mentioned such, and if I'm not mistaken, he mentioned having an aim, which was why he helped you.” I heard Levi state. “Alpha king, do you find anything odd? He refused to join the pack and now wants her daughter to be your Luna. Don't you think he's after claiming the pack?”
I waited patiently, wanting to hear Knox speak, but he didn't.
Could he have sensed my presence?
But what could be the man's aim? He was a beta and can't rule, so was he planning to dethrone Knox and install Vivienne's mate on the throne? That could be the plan, because he wouldn't plan to assassinate Knox, knowing the kinda person he was.
“He tried to control me when I was building this pack. He wishes to have control over me, and I can tell it was the reason he was banished from his previous pack. If he aims to overthrow my rule, then it could be to install a puppet that would marry his daughter and rule with his command, which I'm not sure how he wants to succeed when I have the alpha supreme in my palms…” Knox finally stated, and I took a deep swallow. “He can't take away my life or the pack I built, so I will see an end to it…because there would be no reason for him wanting Vivien to be my luna if not this…”
“If Vivien becomes Luna, they would aim to overthrow me, because the last thing they would do is to kill me. So the best way to not let them succeed is to make sure that Vivien leaves this palace by herself.”
My hands dropped by my side suddenly. I couldn't believe what I had just heard.
So that lady was here for an aim? They want to overthrow Knox? Then what would happen to my people and me?
Vivien already hated me, so they could execute us all. It's not in my favor, so not seeing that she and her father succeed was the only way to be safe with my people.
I finally rang the doorbell, and when the door opened, I walked in majestically and sat beside Knox, my arms across his neck. “Your majesty….”
He glanced at me and cleared his throat. “What are you doing here? Trying to seduce me again?”
“You don't know how much I missed you. I would be going to the club, so I wanted to stay with you for some time, or didn't you miss me?” I asked, my left palm already on his chest.
When I spared Levi a glance, he was smiling and looking away so as not to be caught.
“I'm very busy with political matters. Could you go back to your room? I don't care if you go to the club without staying with me,” he muttered, but I felt the fast racing of his heart and how his lips trembled. “Phoebe, did you hear me just now?” he asked, about to get off my hand on his chest, yet couldn't.
I shook my head at him, this time running my fingers through his beard. “If that's the case, then I would love to discuss something political with you.”
“What's that?” he looked so concerned, and I loved that expression he wore.
I licked my lips and explained, “Do you remember the assassins that attacked me and my friend outside the palace?” I asked, and he nodded. I knew he could be looking into it, but I wanted to be part of it too. “Well, I would love to know how they entered the palace and between me and my friend, who was their target. Each time I remember it, I feel scared, and you know how I hate such feelings.” I made a pitiful face and even lay my head on his shoulder.
He said nothing for a while; instead, ordered that his beta leave, then he said to me, "I've been looking into it, so I would tell you if there's any information we get. But until then, could you stop being careless? You must learn to tell Levi whenever you're leaving the palace….and don't do something rash, or you will not like the outcome.”
I giggled. A whole devil like him was speaking so softly, like those days when we were dating? What a marvelous moon goddess!
I wrapped my two arms around him, with my head still lying on his shoulder. “Of course! I will, since you aren't going to scold me when I do. I'm not going to get you mad again, provided you treat me like you always did.”
“Did you forget something?” he asked, and I knew what he wanted to say.
I smiled and shook my head, “I remember everything, but you said I must not die and should learn to live. So, the only way to continue living is to love you again, and I hope you do so to me too.” I whispered to him and kissed his cheek.
For goddess sake, I missed those days when I would spend the whole day with him and even hate it when it turned dark. Who would believe that the man who made me feel like a queen was now my biggest foe?
If only there were a shortcut to having him dead, I wouldn't be doing this.
Now that I've perceived some things about Vivien and her father, I have every reason to make sure Knox doesn't choose her as Luna and that she leaves soon. Having a pack rule me and my people were already a thorn in my flesh, talk of someone who wants me dead.
Since Knox didn't say anything further, I asked him, “Would you eat my meal if I prepared one? I've been longing to cook for myself, but I didn't want to eat it alone, because it would remind me of those days with you….” I stayed off his body and was even on my feet.
He looked up to me, bit his lower lip as though unsure what to say, and then nodded. “If that will make you happy!”
If that will make me happy? What a fast way of meeting my target!
