Chapter 115 The food spot

The carriage sped through the wide stone road, its wheels rattling heavily against the pavement as the horse galloped forward at moderate speed. The coachman flicked the reins gently, urging the horses forward.

Gradually, the pace began to slow and with a final pull from the coachman, the horse came to a halt.

Right in front was a bustling food spot that seemed like an inn at first glance. The building stood proudly among the many others, larger and more refined.

Its wooden exterior was decorated with intricate carvings that stood out, seemingly to have been designed by an expert in carving.

What stood out the most about the place was the number of crowds that queued right in front of it. The queue was long and stretched from the entrance of the building to the middle of the road. Men and women of different ages stood patiently, some chatting while others merely waited.

Along with the enticing aroma of food, voices and laughter spilled out into the air, making the atmosphere very lively.

Hazel glanced around as they slowly stepped down from the carriage.

The people noticed their presence but quickly averted their gazes. Although they were commoners, the food spot was a renowned one in the pack so they’ve seen their fair share of nobles.

Of course, there would be some people who would gossip, but Hazel didn’t care about those and merely took everything in around her.

Alex smiled at her and explained, “This is one of the most popular spots in the pack. It’s not just popular because of its good food, but also because of how cheap food here can be, accommodating the commoners in return. In addition, the owner also has private rooms for nobles, making the place a sought after place among aristocrats.”

Hazel nodded, her interest piqued.

Alex turned to the coachman and said, “You can leave for now. Pick us up when it’s almost dusk.”

The coachman nodded respectfully and with a soft shout, he rode the carriage away.

“Come, let’s go in. I already made a reservation.” Alex gestured towards Hazel and led the way, she didn’t hesitate before following him.

As they stepped inside, the tantalizing smell became sharper and Hazel couldn’t help but to inhale.

A few attendants quickly approached as soon as they saw Alex. They were led by a tall woman in her thirties with an average look who had her hair packed into a rough bun and wore a black apron around her body.

She smiled when she saw Alex, “Sir Alex, it’s our pleasure to have you here.”

Alex waved his hand, “Madam Lucy sure likes to flatter me, I’m just a regular customer.”

Lucy did not say anything more, but her curious gaze shifted to Hazel who was beside him. She was slightly surprised, Alex was a regular customer here like he had said, but he had never brought a woman here with him.

It was Lucy’s first time seeing a woman with Alex. But she knew well enough not to ask any questions.

Both women nodded at each other in acknowledgment.

“Sir, your room is ready.” One of the attendants, a woman in her early twenties, reported with a slight bow of her head.

Alex nodded, “I will have to trouble you to take us there.”

“It’s no trouble at all.”

Alex and Hazel were soon led to a small room, having just two chairs placed opposite each other with a wooden table, decorated with a flower vase at the center. The seats were placed close to a window that allowed fresh air and a view of the scenery outside.

It was quiet, just like Hazel always loved to have her peace.

“This place is good.” Hasel commented sincerely.

Lucy, who was behind them smiled, “I am grateful you like it. You came on time today, I added a new dish to our menu, I would like my two guests to have their first taste.”

Alex smiled, “Then, serve us my regular and the new dishes. Madam Lucy’s dish has never disappointed after all and I am glad to be the first to have a taste.”

Madam Lucy exchanged a few polite words with Alex before turning to leave.

“You seem quite close to this Madam Lucy.” Hazel pointed out and Alex nodded.

“Yes. A long time ago, when I was still young and in a rebellious stage, I ran away from home, unwilling to be Damien’s beta after what I had heard about iy.” Thinking of this memory, a nostalgic emotion flashed in Alex’s eyes. “I stumbled into this place, I had no money on me then and I was starving but Madam Lucy fed me regardless. The food spot was still just a small stall then, it wasn’t as big as this and she still fed me for a whole day.”

“And then?” Hazel asked.

“And then I kept coming back. At first, it was to repay a favor, and then it was because I genuinely fell in love with her food. Over time, we became more familiar and can even be considered friends.” He concluded.

After a while, the door was knocked before someone pushed it open after a word of acknowledgment from Alex.

Led by Madam Lucy, female attendants filed in one after the other, placing different dishes on the table with aroma that quickly filled the entire room.

Steaming broth with rich vegetables, sauced meat, fresh bread, and an unfamiliar dish Hazel didn’t know.

“This must be the new dish.” She mumbled to herself and didn’t hesitate to take a spoon and a bite.

Different savory tastes bursted in her mouth, triggering her taste buds and her eyes widened.

“This is so good.” She mumbled incoherently, her comment bringing a smile to Madam Lucy’s face.

“I’m glad it suits your taste. Eat as much as you like, the bill is on me.” Madam Lucy replied and Alex chuckled.

“Madam Lucy, you are spoiling me too much. If you keep treating me to meals all the time, I won’t be able to stop coming here.” Alex joked and Madam Lucy laughed.

“Exactly what I want.” She replied. Seeing how much Hazel was enjoying her meal, she signaled to the attendants and said to Alex and Hazel, “I will allow you to enjoy your meal now.”

With that, she left and the room regained its peace once again.
