Chapter twenty-nine

Marcus POV

The courtroom was in an uproar. I stared directly at Marietta trying as hard as I could to read her facial expression. She was guilt-ridden. I could hear whispers of people stating their opinion. Most of them condemned what I just said but I cared less. I was sure Marietta had a hand in this and my only way of getting Alyssa to trust me again was by finding her kidnapper and bringing them to book.

Lordson Al is so good at this game of politics and I could see that he was already looking for ways to cover the truth so I needed to act fast.

As I stood there waiting for the judge to permit me to go on, I could hear my father's heavy breath in my head.

It's the way he breathes whenever he is angry. I can only imagine how disappointed he was in me right now but the time I cared about such things is gone

I am now a man of my decision and I need to prove that to Alyssa. I looked at Alyssa, it was difficult for me to decide what was going on in her mind. I would love to know what she thinks of me and this whole thing I am doing.

Finally, the court was back to order and the judge beckoned to me to go on. I composed myself as best as I could and continued. I told them how Marietta had threatened to deal with Alyssa because I left her for Alyssa.

I also told them about our conversation on the first day I arrived here and her reaction during our conversation this morning.

"So you dare to make such a ridiculous allegation against my daughter based on that?" That was Lordson Al. His eyes sparked with fire as he spoke. I have never seen him so enraged. I felt numb for seconds.

The alphas behind him tried to calm him down, my father included. I was trying so hard to keep my cool. I will not be tempted by his anger.

The judge asked if I had any solid evidence to prove to back my words.

That was when I realized how foolish I was. I had no evidence to back my words. I didn't want to look stupid in front of all these dignitaries else my father will not forgive me for making our pack a laughing stock. I thought long and hard about what to say.

"Well," I cleared my throat. I was about to say something when Alyssa interrupted.

She walked to the front of the room where I was standing raising her hand so that everyone can see the pendant she was holding.

I gasped when I saw the symbol on the pendant. It was the same type of symbol I saw on the back of the people that attacked my friends and me.

Alyssa requested the judge to ask Marietta if she recognizes the pendant.

Marietta was asked to come forward. She took a close look at the pendant and denied knowing it.

"Are you sure?" asked Alyssa

"I said I have never seen this pendant before or are you hard on hearing?" she growled.

"Careful now" the judge cautioned.

Alyssa smiled, she seem to know what she was doing.

Then you wouldn't mind what Caroline has to tell us, would you?

Marietta looked at the shock evident on her face. "What do you mean?"

Just then Ethan walked into the room with a little girl of about 15 years. She was putting on a plane gown that covered up to her ankle. A gown was commonly worn by maids. She looked innocent and was walking cautiously.

Ethan brought her directly before the judge. I noticed she was only looking at the judge or the floor. Ethan must have told her not to look at anyone aside from the judge for obvious reasons.

"Hello Caroline" the judge greeted.

"Hello sir" she responded her voice calm

"I need to ask you some questions, your mistress Marietta is here with us and she will punish you if you dare lie to us."

"Will you like to be punished by your mistress?"

"No please" she replied her voice sobber

"Can you promise to tell me the truth then? "

"Yes, sir. I promise sir." I don't want to get punished by my mistress" she said scared.

"Good girl" the judge complimented.

"Have you seen this before?" Alyssa handed the pendant to her.

"Yes sir. This belongs to my Mistress Marietta.

Murmurs and whispers could be heard. The judge ordered everyone to stay calm and resumed his questioning.

"Are you sure this belongs to our Mistress?" the judge pressed on.

"I have seen her wear it around her neck on several occasions. I have also found it in her pants on a few occasions when I am doing her laundry and I do return it to her.

Another round of murmuring was heard. This time even louder. The judge thanked the girl and Ethan led her out of the court.

I looked at Marietta and she looked dumbfounded. I bet she wished she could disappear into thin air at that moment.

Lordson Al was furious." I can't believe this. Are we going to pass judgment based on something a little girl said? She could have been brainwashed to say these things for all I know."

Everyone knew he was only trying to save his daughter.

I raised my hand and the judge permitted me to speak." I recognize this pendant " I said and everyone looked at me eager to hear what I have to say.

This symbol was on the cloak of the guys who attacked my friends and me several months ago.

"Nonsense!" Lordson Al growled." What? Is this some form of conspiracy against my daughter? "

"My friends saw it too. You can ask them if you want. Their body structure look the same but there faces I didn't get the chance to see clearly because we were outnumbered and the attack was too sudden. All we could think about was how to escape alive. Ever since I saw Thomas, I knew he looked familiar but I couldn't place it until I saw this pendant." I explained.

"I tried describing the symbol to my father and the alpha of the pack that helped us so if you don't believe my friends you could ask my father or the alpha of our neighboring pack."

"Is this true? " The judge asked my father.

All eyes were on me, my father. Even Lordson Al looked at him expectantly. Reluctantly my father nodded "Yes he did describe something like that" and the room was thrown into tantrum. I could hear angry whispers all over the room.

Lordson Al looked at my father, disappointment evident on his face. I smirked. I couldn't believe it. I was in awe at the turn of events. All fingers were pointing and Marietta and I just knew there was no way she was going to escape this one. Not even her father's influence can save her now.

It took another five minutes for the nudge to get everyone to keep quiet.

We all went back to our seats waiting eagerly for the judge to pass his judgment.
