Chapter sixteen

Alyssa's POV

By the time we left the seer's house, it was already evening. We then went back into the village where Ethan had asked the others to wait for us. We spent the night in the village.

Early in the morning, we stormed the road. It took us four days to arrive at our destination.

There was no attack as I had feared and that was a relief but I was disappointed.

Things didn't go exactly as I had hoped. I had hoped to find answers to all the questions running through my mind instead I was met with more questions.

I need to find out who Samantha is and how I can find her.

Ethan promised to help in any way he could.

Meanwhile, my dreams have become more frequent and more clear. It was now like we were having a conversation.

One night, I was sleeping when I had the exact kind of dream I had when Ethan and his packmates were away to see the seer.

I was in the part where Jackson stabbed Ethan then I woke up to some disturbing noise. I ran outside to see what was happening.

Ethan and some guys were engaged in a heated conversation. My heart leaped. I ran towards them to see if I could stop whatsoever that was but before I got to where they were one guy pounced on Ethan.

I was so scared. The fight was fierce. After what seemed like a minute another guy came from behind. The flickering light from the torch one of them was holding flashed on his face and there he was Jackson.

The guy Ethan once got into a fight with because of me. He was walking towards Ethan with something I couldn't see but I could guess was a knife.

I let out a loud growl and this woke some of our pack members up. They came out from their various huts and ran towards the clearing where the fight was going on.

Seeing this, the other guys took to their hills including the guy that was fighting Ethan had abandoned the fight and was running away.

Our packed chased after them. They ran towards the forest as fast as their legs could carry them. Before they could reach the woods, Jackson stumbled and fell.

One of our pack members closest to him grabbed him but before he could do anything Jackson dived a knife through his heart. With that, he disappeared into the woods.

We ran towards him. By the time we got to him, he was already covered in a pool of blood. He was shivering.

"Nicole" Ethan growled. No Nicole"

What? Nicole? I thought. Nicole was one of Ethan's closest allies in the pack.

When I started coming to Ethan's pack, Nicole, Tyler, and Steve were among those who accepted me with open arms. They helped me to feel at home.

He was gasping for breath and trying to say something. About two or three people ran to fetch the pack's healer.

The healer was summoned immediately but by the time the healer arrived, Nicole had already gone stiff and cold.

One touch and the healer shook his head. I knew the next thing that would follow.

The healer announced that Nicole was gone. Sorrow overtook the atmosphere. Everyone is growling and howling.

My dream began to make sense. This was it. The seer said my dream was a glimpse of what was about to happen or had happened. Now it was beginning to make sense.

They had come to kill Ethan which was why Ethan was stabbed in my dream. Nicole was the guy who stood up to protect him and got killed

The dream was a warning. I should have known. Nicole was a good friend indeed.

I was so heartbroken. It was heart-wrenching to see Nicole's lifeless body lying there in a pool of blood.

This is the biggest tragedy since the attack. Ethan sat beside Nicole's stiff body crying his eyes out like a baby. I have never seen him cry before. He looked devastated.

We were all devastated.

As the tradition of the pack, Nicole's body was burnt three days after his death. The ashes were collected and spread on a flowing river by the alpha of the pack.

George is the new alpha of the pack. He was selected as soon as the village was renovated and so far he has been a good leader.

I didn't quite understand the principle behind spraying the remains of a dead person on a flowing river but I knew it must have some significance.

In my pack, when a member dies, his body is burnt and his ash is collected into a gourd and buried near a river or at the foot of a tree. They say that place becomes your new home.

Burying one's ash close to a river allows you to have enough water to drink and bathe and a cool temperature. If it's close to a tree, you will never run out of food.

Those who die as traitors are buried on a bare soil far away from water or a tree as an eternal punishment for their treachery.

A meeting was held later in the night and it was agreed upon that they will lay an ambush on the culprit's pack to avenge Nicole's death.

Their eyes sparked with fire as they talked. Anger was evident on their faces. They were all furious. I can't blame them. They have every right to be.

George was the only one trying to talk in a calm demeanor for obvious reasons.

Many of them wanted to match Jackson's pack and unleash chaos immediately but George insisted it was a stupid move.

Brave soldiers work with the brain, not emotion. Working with emotion will get you killed" he explained.

"They will be expecting us. They have probably laid an ambush waiting for us to attack. Right now we are both mentally and physically unfit to fight.

We will wait until we heal from this wound. And when they least expect it, we would attack with all our might."

There was wisdom in what he said and everybody nodded in agreement.

Finally, the meeting came to an end and we all dispersed.

Ethan didn't go to his room. He went to the village clearing and I followed him.

"Do you mind if I join you? I asked. Ofcourse not, sit please". He said clearing a space for me beside him.

I sat down beside him and for seemed like minutes nobody said a word. We both sat there gazing at the stars.

Do you remember the dream I told you about? " " Yes I do Alyssa" he replied sharply as if he knew what I was going to say all along.

" I have been thinking about it," he said.

"I had that dream again, right before the incident"

He looked at me, shock evident on his face.

"then your dreams are probably not just dreams. Maybe your dreams are a warning. Maybe we need to start taking your dreams more seriously, "he said.

He paused for a while before he continued this time with a lower voice." Alyssa. The seer said you are a great person right What if she is right? What if you are a seer? Or maybe a god or something like that? I looked at him to see if he was joking but his face and tone both sounded serious.

"An outcast! A god? Don't be ridiculous." I said. We both sat there silently weighing the weight of his words knowing so well what he said could be true.

"Just know that I will be there for you if you need me" he said and laid on his back so that he was facing the sky.
