Chapter 208 Lily Is Still Being Rescued
As soon as Grace left, Samantha pounced on the opportunity. "Alexander, did you hear that? I was just telling Mom—Grace isn't being charitable at all. She brought that child home, she wants to adopt that girl, and I bet you anything, that girl is her biological daughter!"
Alexander asked, "Who told you that?"
Samantha replied, "Isn't it obvious? RH-negative AB blood is incredibly rare! What are the odds that she and this child just happen to have the same blood type?"
Mary frowned, finding the situation increasingly suspicious and unsettling. "Alexander, she has a point. Think about it—she already has Max, so why would she want to adopt another child? This girl is a complete stranger to her, so why would she be so kind to her?"
Alexander remained silent.
Samantha pressed on, "You can't possibly think this is just a coincidence, can you? Grace just went to donate blood, right? You could do a paternity test. Who knows what shocking truth you might uncover!"
Alexander said firmly, "That won't be necessary."
He didn't want to investigate.
William interjected, "Alexander, this matter should be cleared up. Like your grandmother said, you can know someone's face but not their heart—sometimes you can't judge people by appearances alone. We don't really know Grace's background, but this concerns your marriage, so it is not a trivial matter."
Alexander replied, "Even if there were to be any investigation, I would handle it personally. Stay out of this matter."
Mary opened her mouth as if to speak, then decided against it.
She could see Alexander's mind clearly wasn't on this topic. After all, although the doctor had announced that Liam was out of danger, he wouldn't be able to relax until he saw Liam with his own eyes.
"Alexander, the doctor said Liam is going to be fine," William said soothingly. "Don't be so tense."
He walked over and gently patted Alexander's shoulder, only to discover his muscles were rigid with tension.
One could only imagine how wound up he was at this moment, his eyes never left the operating room doors.
After what felt like an eternity, Liam was finally wheeled out of the operating room.
He lay on the gurney with an IV needle still inserted in his forehead. The little boy's face was pale as he lay unconscious with his eyes closed.
Alexander immediately approached and grabbed the doctor's arm. "How is he?"
The doctor replied, "The child is fine—he's out of danger. Compared to the little girl, his injuries are relatively minor. He should recover after a few days of rest."
Mary eagerly approached, asking, "Did he break any bones? Is there any internal bleeding?"
The doctor explained, "Multiple soft tissue contusions throughout his body, mild concussion, and several broken teeth. However, since he's at the age where he's losing baby teeth anyway, the broken teeth will grow back, so it's not a serious concern."
Mary said, "I heard that when he first arrived at the hospital, his mouth was full of blood... surely it wasn't internal bleeding? His head, his organs—everything else is okay, right?"
The doctor clarified, "The blood in his mouth was from the cut in his gums and the roof of his mouth. Two of the teeth were baby teeth, and one was a newly grown permanent tooth. It's nothing to worry about. We've already given the child a complete examination and confirmed there's nothing wrong—otherwise we couldn't have made this announcement, as delaying treatment would make us liable too!"
Only then did Mary feel reassured.
Alexander looked down at Liam on the bed.
His eyes were closed, and he appeared drowsy and listless.
Alexander asked, "Why isn't he awake yet?"
The doctor replied, "The concussion—he vomited several times in the operating room and is still dizzy. He should wake up soon."
"I see."
Alexander was about to leave when something occurred to him. He turned around and looked at the operating room doors, which were still tightly shut.
The surgical lights overhead were still on.
Lily was still in the operating room.
Alexander asked, "How is that child doing?"
Seeing him ask about Lily, the doctor's expression grew grave, "She's not out of the woods yet."
Alexander pressed, "What do you mean? Are you saying her life is in danger?"
The doctor replied, "Initially, when both children were brought in, we saw blood on both of them. After such a serious accident, we assumed both children were equally injured. However, after careful examination, we discovered the boy wasn't seriously hurt, but the girl was severely injured than we initially thought. I understand Dr. Smith found a donor and is conducting an emergency blood transfusion."
Alexander nodded, "I understand."
He turned to Mary. "You all go with Liam to his room. I'll stay here and wait."
Mary nodded, fussing over the unconscious Liam all the way.
William and Samantha left as well.
Alexander sat alone outside the operating room.
Time crawled by, minute by minute.
Soon, a doctor walked over carrying a container with Grace's blood for transfusion, already processed and filtered, ready to be taken into the operating room.
Grace approached with a nurse's support.
She had donated 500cc of blood and was feeling weak.
But that hadn't been enough for the emergency, so she had steeled herself and let the nurse draw an additional 100cc.
The nurse gave her bread and milk to help replenish her strength.
Grace looked toward the operating room, where the lights were still on, and asked, "How's Liam?"
Alexander replied, "He's already been moved to a room."
Grace said, "You've been waiting here this whole time?"
She seemed surprised.
After all, Alexander valued Liam so highly—she was shocked he hadn't gone to watch over him.
Alexander said, "Liam has plenty of people watching over him, and the doctor said his injuries weren't serious."
Grace said guiltily, "Alexander, I'm sorry. I didn't take proper care of Liam, and this happened."
Alexander replied, "Liam is going to be fine."
His brow was deeply furrowed, and he didn't say much more, though he also didn't say "I don't blame you."
It was clear that Liam's accident had greatly displeased him.
After all, Liam was such a well-behaved child—he was never mischievous or troublesome. For this to happen, Grace truly had failed in her supervision.
Nobody is perfect.
Alexander valued Liam more than his own life, so naturally he harbored some resentment toward her over this incident.
Grace said, "I'm sorry..."
She truly didn't know what else to say.
Alexander replied, "Forget it. No one wanted this to happen, but it has happened, and there's no point in saying anything now. The silver lining is that Liam is okay."
Grace said, "I know you must blame me."
Alexander looked at her with burning intensity. "If Liam had suffered more serious injuries, I truly wouldn't have forgiven you."
Grace felt a sharp pain in her chest.
Alexander realized he hadn't properly managed his emotions and that his words had been too harsh, but they couldn't be taken back.
Grace said, "I just got a call from the traffic police. They want me to come in and handle the accident report."
