Chapter 209 Grace Causes Great Harm!
The driver who caused the accident had already given his statement to the police.
But Lily was still in the operating room.
Grace wanted to wait until Lily was out of danger before dealing with anything else.
Alexander said nothing. He suddenly stood up and said to Grace, "Since you're here, I'll go check on Liam."
Grace nodded, "Alright..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Alexander had already turned and walked away.
Grace leaned back against the wall, exhaustedly rubbing her temples.
Every minute, every second outside the operating room was unbearably agonizing.
The more she thought about it, the more she blamed herself, the more she regretted everything.
Perhaps Max had been so self-sufficient that she'd assumed Liam was equally reliable. Max could not only take care of himself but also look after her.
But Liam was acting exactly as a child his age should. He was already more mature and well-behaved than most kids his age, but no matter how good he was, he was still only seven years old.
Seven years old...
How could she have left two six- and seven-year-olds alone while she went to buy ice cream?
Never mind Alexander—
Even she couldn't forgive herself.
Lily still hadn't come out...
Grace grew even more frantic, terrified that something terrible might happen to Lily.
...
Before she knew it, another hour had passed.
The operating room lights finally went out.
Grace was slow to react. It was not until the doors opened from the inside that she snapped back to attention, stood up, and walked over. As soon as the doctor emerged, she grabbed him and asked, "How is the child?"
She stared intently at the doctor's face, her eyes anxious, dreading whatever grim news might come from his mouth.
The doctor still had sweat on his forehead. He also breathed a sigh of relief and said, "It was touch and go, but we managed to stabilize her for now."
Grace frowned, her heart skipping a beat. "For now?"
The doctor explained, "I'm still urgently contacting the blood bank for more blood. She lost too much blood—what we drew from you wasn't enough to save her life. Currently, her vital signs are still very weak."
Grace quickly said, "If 500cc isn't enough, you can draw more."
The doctor gave a bitter smile. "You've already donated 500cc. The human body has limits—there's only so much blood stored in your system. We can't just keep drawing indefinitely."
Donating blood wasn't like drawing water from a well, where you could take as much as you wanted.
Generally, people donate 200-400cc at most.
Grace had already given 500cc and was experiencing some adverse effects like dizziness.
Grace pressed, "Could I donate another 200cc? Another 200cc wouldn't kill me."
The doctor replied, "Don't worry, I've already notified the blood bank to rush more blood here."
Only then did Grace nod, though she still wasn't reassured. "No matter what, I hope you'll do everything possible to save her life."
The doctor said, "We'll do our best. For now, we need to transfer her to the ICU. If all goes well, the blood from the blood bank should arrive in two hours."
"Alright."
The ICU didn't allow visitors.
Grace watched helplessly as the nurses wheeled the bed out. She took a couple of steps closer, only able to see Lily's pale little face wrapped in bandages.
Her heart ached terribly.
After Lily was transferred to the ICU, Grace realized she'd forgotten to ask Alexander which room Liam was in.
Grace went to the information desk, asked for the room number, then took the elevator upstairs.
Just as she reached the hospital room door, Grace heard Mary's angry voice, "That Grace really is nothing but trouble! I thought she was Alexander's lucky star, but turns out she's a disaster. If it weren't for her, would Liam have gotten hurt?"
Inside the room, Alexander wasn't there—he'd probably gone to handle paperwork. Only Mary, William, and Samantha were present.
With Alexander absent, Mary was angrily ranting non-stop.
On the bed, Liam had woken up but was still weak. His eyelids were half-open, and hearing Mary's venomous tone, he closed his eyes again, not wanting to be awake.
Grace stood at the hospital room doorway but didn't enter. Mary continued her furious tirade, "My heart is just breaking! When has our Liam ever suffered like this?"
Samantha said, "Mom, don't worry. The doctor said Liam is fine, didn't he?"
Mary replied, "Fine or not fine, look at him—he's covered in injuries everywhere. How can I not feel heartbroken?"
Samantha said, "But you can't really blame Grace for this. Liam isn't her biological child—how much can you expect her to care about him?"
Mary said, "She's not even married into the family yet, and I can already see she can't accept Liam's background. She treats Liam and Max completely differently. Look how well she takes care of Max, but Liam's only been in her care for a few days and this happens."
Alexander had just finished paying the medical bills and was walking over when he saw Grace standing in the doorway. He frowned slightly, and soon he too heard the voices coming from the hospital room.
"If she's going to treat Liam like this, I absolutely will not agree to her marrying into this family!"
Alexander walked in.
As soon as Mary saw him, she fell silent.
Grace followed closely behind him.
When Mary saw her, she muttered, "How do you still have the nerve to come see Liam?"
Grace said, "I came to check if Liam had woken up."
Mary replied, "We don't need your fake sympathy."
Grace said, "Mary, Liam got hurt, and I feel terrible about it too."
Mary shot back, "I don't see any remorse from you."
Alexander said, "Liam has not fully recovered yet. You're all shouting and carrying on in his room—how is he supposed to rest properly?"
Mary said, "I just feel more and more heartbroken looking at him. You see, Liam is..."
Alexander looked toward Liam.
Liam was lying flat on the bed, his color gradually returning.
Alexander said, "The doctor said Liam's injuries were the least severe."
Mary said, "I bet it was that girl who was running around recklessly, and Liam got hit trying to help her out of kindness."
Alexander said, "If you keep making this much noise, you can go home."
Mary looked shocked. "You're kicking me out? You won't kick this woman out, but you're kicking me out?"
Alexander replied, "At least she's not making noise."
Mary said, "She's the one who got Liam hurt like this, and she still has the nerve to make noise? She..."
"Enough!" Alexander couldn't help but raise his voice, drowning out Mary's endless complaints.
Mary was stunned, staring at him in disbelief.
Alexander said, "If you keep this up, get out!"
His emotions suddenly became volatile—clearly he'd reached his breaking point and exploded.
William said, "Alexander, how can you speak to your grandmother like that?"
"You too!" Alexander coldly interrupted him. "Keep making noise and you can get out too. If you really care about Liam and want to stay in this room, from now on, don't ask a single question and don't say a single word!"
