Chapter 207 The Child Has Lost Too Much Blood and Needs an Emergency Transfusion
As soon as Mary saw Alexander arrive, she rushed over and grabbed his arm. "Alexander, thank God you're here! Grace let Liam get hit by a car, and now the children are still in the emergency room fighting for their lives! If—if something terrible happens to Liam, I won't be able to go on living!"
She collapsed onto the bench, tears blurring her vision.
Alexander looked toward Grace. "What happened?"
Grace replied, "I took Lily to see the psychologist. Afterward, I was bringing both children home. Liam suddenly said he wanted ice cream, so I had them wait while I went to buy some. In just the time it took me to turn around, both children... were hit by a car."
Mary refused to believe it. "How is that possible? I've taught Liam since he was little never to run into the street or play near the road. He's always been so obedient—he knows how dangerous roads are. How could he suddenly run into traffic for no reason?"
Grace said, "Liam has always been well-behaved. I had them sit on the bus stop bench to wait for me. The ice cream cart was only a few meters from the bus stop—I could see them the entire time."
Mary demanded, "If you could see them the entire time, why did Liam still get hurt?"
Samantha interjected, "Mom, could it be that Liam was pushed by that girl?"
Mary stared at Samantha in shock.
Samantha continued her poisonous speculation, "I think those orphanage kids are all troublemakers. Think about it—they've been orphans since childhood, with no parents to love or guide them. Orphanages are rough places with so many children—there's bound to be scheming and rivalry. Those kids will do anything to find a good home! She brought that girl back, and I bet the problem started with her. That girl probably wanted to eliminate the competition. If Liam died, she could be adopted as the only child. She must have pushed Liam—otherwise, why would he suddenly get hit by a car?"
Grace frowned. "That's completely ridiculous."
Samantha pressed on, "I'm not being ridiculous! I heard that adopting a child has very strict requirements. That girl must have wanted to monopolize the adoption opportunity. She tried to kill Liam so she could be the only one left to adopt!"
Grace replied, "Lily's injuries are worse than Liam's. She's still in the operating room too."
Samantha scoffed, "Who knows how badly she's really hurt? You only saw blood on her—what if it was Liam's blood?"
Alexander's voice cut through coldly, "That's enough."
Samantha looked hurt. "Alexander, you can't be too trusting! You and Liam are so close, and now he's been hurt so badly he's still in surgery. I'm just standing up for him!"
Alexander said, "You should all go home. I'll stay here."
He was addressing William and Samantha.
He had no patience for Samantha's troublemaking.
Samantha protested, "Alexander, I—"
"Go home!" Alexander commanded, then turned to William. "Take her home. Don't stay here."
William said, "I'm worried about Liam too."
Alexander replied, "If you're truly worried about Liam, then stay quiet. Everything can wait until he's out of danger."
William glanced at Samantha, who finally fell silent.
Mary sat nearby, shooting hateful glares at Grace. "If anything happens to Liam, I'll never forgive you! I'll spend my dying breath making you pay!"
Alexander said, "Grandmother, Grace would never do anything to hurt Liam."
If she had wanted to, she'd had plenty of opportunities before now.
Mary's voice shook, "Alexander, you can't judge a book by its cover. How do you know she doesn't have evil intentions?"
Alexander replied firmly, "Grandmother, I know her better than anyone."
Mary's lips trembled as she sighed and sank heavily into her seat, leaning on her cane.
As time crawled by, Grace's anguish deepened, guilt weighing heavier in her eyes.
No matter what, Liam and Lily were just children, and she had failed in her duty as their guardian.
If either child didn't make it, she would be to blame.
She had been negligent, careless...
Grace covered her face with her hands, breathing rapidly as she fought to suppress her overwhelming anxiety.
Soon, the operating room doors opened.
Alexander was the first to react, striding over. "How are they?"
The doctor asked, "Who are the children's parents?"
Grace started to stand, but Alexander answered, "I am."
The doctor said, "Two children were brought in—a boy and a girl. They're not siblings, are they?"
Alexander asked, "What's wrong?"
The doctor replied, "The boy is out of immediate danger, but the girl has lost a lot of blood and needs an emergency transfusion. She has RH-negative AB blood. Are any of you related to her?"
Hearing that Liam was out of danger, Mary jumped up excitedly. "My great-grandson is going to be okay?"
The doctor nodded. "Yes, though the girl is still in critical condition."
"Thank God! Thank God..." Mary clasped her hands together in prayer. "Thank you, Lord, for protecting him!"
The doctor frowned and repeated, "Is anyone here related to this girl? She needs an emergency blood transfusion, and our blood bank is running low..."
Alexander remained silent.
He didn't have RH-negative AB blood.
That blood type was quite rare.
The doctor's expression grew urgent. "Are there no family members present?"
Alexander said, "She's an orphan. She has no family."
Grace suddenly stood up. "I... I have RH-negative AB blood. Doctor, if you need to save her, you can use mine."
William and Samantha immediately looked at her with suspicion.
Samantha asked sarcastically, "Grace, you also have RH-negative AB blood?"
Grace nodded. "Yes."
Samantha's voice dripped with insinuation, "Isn't that quite a coincidence? The girl has RH-negative AB blood, and so do you. What are the odds?"
Grace said, "Saving her is what matters right now."
She didn't have time to explain. She just wanted to help Lily get through this life-threatening crisis.
Regardless of everything else, this accident was her responsibility. Liam was out of danger, but Lily was still fighting for her life—having lost so much blood. whatever it took, she had to make sure Lily survived.
The doctor nodded. "Alright, come with me. Time is critical. After we draw your blood, it needs to be processed before transfusion, and the situation is urgent..."
"Of course."
Without hesitation, Grace followed the doctor.
