Chapter 71: Monalisa's secret
Jayden's POV
I could barely focus during the meeting with the shareholders. I was lost in thought, I was thinking about what Cynthia had told me about Monalisa's mum being alive. She might be making some stories up, but a part of me really believes that she is telling me the truth. She talked about Monalisa being disowned and hating her family.
Honestly, Monalisa has been acting up and all crazy.
While processing the information in my brain, I heard someone tap a pen on the table.
I gently lifted my head and met the eyes of everyone. Everyone seems to be starting at me.
I sat up and properly and adjusted my jacket.
"I apologize for not paying attention to the meeting. Where were we?
"Mr Jayden...this is an important meeting. We're talking about increasing the share capital of the company. The company has been thriving so well but you seem so lost" said a shareholder.
"I sincerely apologise. I'm not supposed to bring personal issues to work and allow it disturb me and distract me. I apologize "
"It must be a serious issue " Said another shareholder .
"Yes but it shouldn't distract me. We should continue with the meeting "
"Let's adjourn the meeting " the first shareholder that spoke moved the motion.
"I second it. You go fix yourself and we can come back to talk about this issue " added the second shareholder that spoke.
"Thanks so considerate of you all. Thank you. Very well then, I declare this meeting adjourned to next week, same day and time and same place. Thank you" I quickly rose on my feet.
Athena gathered my stuff and followed me out.
After a long day at the office, I went home, exhausted, hungry and unsettled.
I really needed answers to the questions in my mind.
Monalisa was already home.
She was sitting alone in the living room, watching some TV show when I walked in.
She dropped the TV remote and rushed over to me to welcome me.
She took me my bag from me and walked me to our room.
"I already made dinner. I was waiting for you, called you and you never returned any of my calls. Why?
"My bad. I didn't notice my phone ring. I already had a bad day, I just want to take my bath and get some rest "
"And dinner?
"What about it?
"Won't you have dinner?
"I'll prefer some snacks and juice"
"Why? Ain't you hungry?
"I am hungry. Honestly..." I held her hands. "I think I'm going pretty crazy over here"
"What's going on? Is everything okay at the office?
"Yes but I think something crazy is going on in my life and I'm behind closed doors that won't be open anytime soon. I feel I was cheated and locked away..." I paused and sharply inhaled and exhaled. "What the fuck am I saying? Cheated? Like I'm innocent. Didn't I deceive Monalisa into marrying me? I mumbled and let go of her hand. "Yes I am really hungry and I will have dinner with you "
Her face lit up immediately with a smile.
"Sure. I'll go serve dinner. Come down soon" she kissed my cheek before leaving the room.
I sat on the couch leaning back.
"Why am I so worked up with her keeping a secret? I mean, am I not keeping a secret from her? How I intend to use and dump her. Well, if her secret ever comes to light, I will just use it as an opportunity to discard her from my life, forever "
I joined Monalisa at the dining room for dinner. Monalisa dished our food and started off with her.
I couldn't help but stare at her. I was watching her every move, the way she ate and her eyes movement.
Then, her phone rang. Monalisa in a rush grabbed her phone and I noticed her countenance changed when she saw the caller ID.
A spark of terror lit in her eyes. She rose quickly, her gaze locked on the phone , her mind racing with worse case scenarios.
I observed her carefully.
Monalisa stepped away from the table and out of the dining room.
I set my fork and knife down and stood up, keeping a watchful eye on her as I followed her carefully.
I paused and hid away from her to eavesdrop on her conversation.
"Hello, what do you want from me?
Godfrey let out a derisive chuckle. "I like it when you are scared. I want you to be so scared of me, Monalisa"
"What do you want from me?
"I want you to leave your marriage "
"You must be out of your mind! You think I will...! Her voice rose and she hesitated , glancing around nervously before continuing. "What made you think I would leave my marriage? Hold on, for who? For you? You're the dumbest asshole I've ever met in my entire life. Stay the hell away from me and don't ever call me again " she spoke in a hushed tone, her words slow and guarded.
"Let's meet up tomorrow. I'll text you the address. By 4pm. Do not keep me waiting. If you mess up, I'm dealing with Jayden my way"
"You wouldn't dare. I'll get you for this"
"Get me? I dare you " He sneered at her with laughter before ending the call.
Monalisa took a deep breath, calming her nerves.
I carefully returned back to the dining room and waited for her.
Monalisa adjusted her outfit and joined me at the dining room. She placed her phone carefully on the table.
She was almost pale. I realised she was boiling with so much anger but she couldn't let it out.
I finished up with the glass of wine and dropped the glass on the table.
I adjusted the chair, rose to my feet and adjusted my shirt. I fixed a furious gaze at her without her realizing it, before turning to leave the dining room.
It's clear that Monalisa is hiding a lot of things from me, and I'm going to find out soon. Once I do that, I won't hesitate to throw her out of my life for good.
