Garrett was forcibly sent out of the research institute by Shannon, fuming with anger. He never expected Deanna to be so unyielding. However, he couldn't help but feel a bit worried about the last few things Deanna had said.
He had long suspected who was behind Olivia's death, but the benefits he received at the time made him refrain from investigating further. Now, he needed to find out the truth about Olivia's death before Deanna did, or he would be at a disadvantage.
With this thought, he took out his phone and instructed his confidant, "Look into who Olivia met before she died seven years ago."
"Olivia?" The confidant was momentarily confused.
Garrett reminded him, "My ex-wife. Investigate this discreetly and don't let anyone find out."
The confidant finally understood. After nodding in agreement, he hung up the phone, and Garrett headed to the company. Little did he know, his confidant had already been bought off by Mia.
At the Jones family villa, Mia received the message from Garrett's confidant and panicked. She quickly called him and demanded, "What happened? Why is Garrett suddenly investigating Olivia's death?"
"Sorry, ma'am. Mr. Jones went out this morning without me, so I don't know why he's suddenly looking into his ex-wife's death," the confidant reported truthfully.
Mia couldn't help but vent her anger, scolding, "You don't know? Can't you find out? Do I have to remind you of everything? I'm starting to doubt your competence!"
After her outburst, she added, "Investigate now. I want to know what happened with Garrett within half an hour!"
The confidant agreed and hung up to start his investigation.
At the same time, Deanna was also pondering Garrett's sudden change in demeanor. She was certain he knew something but wasn't telling her for some reason. She contacted Lance and shared her suspicions, "I suspect Garrett knows something about my mother's death. Can you arrange for someone to investigate what he was doing around the time of her death seven years ago?"
"Sure, I actually have new information about your mother's death," Lance replied with a smile and shared his recent findings.
Deanna perked up immediately and asked eagerly, "What did you find out?"
"My people discovered that after your mother died, your grandmother didn't believe it was suicide and wanted a forensic examination. However, your father had her body cremated before the forensic team arrived," Lance explained, pausing to let Deanna process the information.
After a few seconds, he continued, "Normally, the dead's family would keep their bodies before choosing a good burial site. Your father's actions suggest he knew more about your mother's death and might have been involved. Additionally, my people found out that a doctor who treated your mother at the hospital might know the true cause of her death."
Deanna couldn't contain her excitement and asked, "Where is this doctor now?"
"Seven years ago, shortly after your mother's burial, the doctor went abroad for further studies and hasn't returned since. No one knows his current whereabouts, but I've already sent people to track him down. If he's still alive, we'll find him," Lance assured her.
Deanna felt grateful and said, "Thank goodness for you. Without your help, I might never have uncovered these details. I might never have been able to clear my mother's name."
Hearing Deanna's somber tone, Lance comforted her, "Don't be sad. One day we'll uncover the truth about our mother's death and bring her peace."
"You're right. No matter how long it takes, I will find out the truth and ensure my mother didn't die in vain," Deanna said firmly.
Then she suddenly realized something was off. "Who said she's your mother? She's my mother. You can't call her that."
"A mother-in-law is like half a mother, isn't she? Why can't I call her that?" Lance's teasing voice came through the phone.
Deanna was momentarily speechless and retorted, "Even if she's a mother-in-law, that's only after we're married. We're not married yet."
"So, are you hinting that we should get married soon?" Lance teased again. "I can't do that; I don't want to rush things and regret it later."
Deanna blushed and stammered, "Who... who hinted at that? I'm telling you to be reserved. We're not married yet; you can't call her that."
