Half an hour later, Mia finally received a reply from Garrett's confidant, and she was terrified.
"Are you sure Garrett went to see Deanna before deciding to investigate Olivia's death?"
"I'm sure," Garrett's confidant confirmed.
Mia's heart raced upon hearing this.
She hurriedly hung up the phone and contacted Emily. "What should we do? That wretched Deanna is starting to suspect Olivia's death and is urging your father to investigate it?"
"What's going on? Why would Deanna suddenly suspect Olivia's death?" Emily was equally alarmed on the other end of the line.
It was well known that Olivia's death had a lot to do with her. If Deanna found out anything, she would be finished.
No, she couldn't let Deanna find out.
"I remember there were two people who knew the truth back then. One was a servant by Olivia's side who died a few years ago. The other was the attending doctor who tried to save Olivia," Emily said with a grim expression.
Mia confirmed, "That's right. The only one left who knows the truth is that doctor, but he went abroad for further studies a few years ago and hasn't been heard from since."
"No news? Then have someone find him," Emily said coldly.
She paused for a moment and then added harshly, "Only the dead can keep secrets. Do you understand what I mean?"
For some reason, Mia shuddered at the coldness in her voice.
"Another murder? What if we get caught?" Mia didn't have as much nerve as Emily.
Emily understood what her mother feared and said gravely, "You have to understand, if that doctor doesn't die, Deanna will find out that we killed her mother. If he dies, we have a fifty-fifty chance that Deanna won't find other clues. After all, seven years have passed, and many traces should have been erased by time."
Mia had to admit that Emily's words convinced her.
Indeed, if that doctor didn't die, both she and her daughter would be done for.
But if he died, they still had a chance.
In the following days, Deanna waited for news from Lance while working with Lionel to decode the special formula.
Due to the confidentiality of the matter, Deanna and Lionel always worked on it after everyone else in the lab had left.
Even if someone occasionally saw them together, no one suspected anything, thinking they were discussing a new formula.
One day, while Deanna was handling some documents, Brent knocked on the door and walked in.
"Miss, the list for the social event has been finalized. Please take a look."
As he spoke, Brent handed over the list he was holding.
Deanna became interested immediately. "Let me see who's on it."
She noticed that quite a few people had signed up, including Lionel.
"Oh, Mr. Grant is participating too?"
"Mr. Grant initially didn't want to join, but his team members coaxed him into it," Brent explained.
Deanna nodded and smiled. "Leave the list with me. I'll ask Lance tonight if they're ready. If they are, we'll set the date for the event and give these people a day off."
Brent nodded and then reported on other work matters before leaving the office.
At ten o'clock that night, Lance came to pick Deanna up from work.
On their way home, Deanna brought up the social event. "Has your side finalized the list? Ours is already set."
"I'm not sure about that. Xavier is handling it. I'll have him talk to you," Lance said, glancing at Xavier who was driving.
Xavier didn't need any prompting and reported proactively, "There are still a few people who haven't decided whether to participate. I'll give you an answer by tomorrow afternoon at the latest."
Deanna nodded and then curiously asked Xavier, "Mr. Nelson, I remember you don't have a girlfriend yet. Are you participating in this event?"
"This is a rare opportunity. How could I not participate? I hope you can introduce someone to me," Xavier said ingratiatingly to Deanna.
It was the first time Deanna had seen him with such an expression and she laughed. "This kind of thing depends on you. It's not something others can meddle in."
Xavier looked a bit disappointed but didn't push further.
After all, Missus was right; such matters were indeed not suitable for others to interfere in.
About ten minutes later, Deanna and Lance arrived at the manor.
As soon as they entered the foyer, they heard laughter coming from inside.
Walking in, Deanna saw Julia playing with two little ones in the living room.
"Julia, what brings you here?" Deanna asked in surprise.
The two little ones ran over joyfully upon hearing her voice. "Mommy, you're back!"
Julia looked over with a smile and said, "I got kicked out by my parents, so I'm here seeking refuge with you."
