Chapter 56
Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's immediate understanding, his tactical mind embracing her insight and expanding upon it. "A two-pronged approach," he said, his storm-grey eyes meeting hers with perfect comprehension. "We maintain the appearance of strategy. "We maintain the appearance of challenge preparations while simultaneously targeting his human connections directly."
Luna Holland's silver eyes brightened with approval. "Precisely. The ceremonial sealing will keep Marcus occupied for at least another hour. That gives us a narrow window to act against these military contacts."
"But we don't know exactly where they're meeting," Brodie pointed out, his expression unusually serious. "Or how many warriors has Marcus sent?"
Alpha Holland moved to a large map mounted on his study wall, his finger tracing the western territories beyond their pack lands. "The research facility is here," he said, indicating a seemingly empty area. "Officially, it doesn't exist. Unofficially, we've been monitoring unusual activity there for months."
"How quickly could we get reconnaissance in place?" Nickolas asked, his tactical mind already formulating possibilities.
"The Storm Strider elite scouts could reach the perimeter within forty minutes," Miles replied, checking something on his phone. "They're already positioned for the challenge security."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas weighing options, calculating risks against potential gains. His protective instincts warred with strategic necessity as he considered their limited window of opportunity.
"We need visual confirmation of the meeting," he decided. "But no engagement. If Marcus's warriors are indeed meeting with human military, we need evidence, not confrontation."
"I can coordinate that," Miles said immediately, his fingers already typing rapidly on his phone. "Our scouts have specialised equipment for covert observation."
Another chime from Brodie's phone drew their attention. His expression shifted to one of intense focus as he read the incoming message. "Sera reports she's reached Marcus's quarters. Security is minimal, as expected with his absence. She's beginning the search for his records now."
A wave of tense anticipation passed through the group. Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's mixture of hope and wariness; they were making progress on multiple fronts, but everything hinged on finding concrete evidence of Marcus's betrayal.
"How long will the ceremonial sealing take?" she asked, turning to Luna Holland.
"At minimum, another forty minutes," her mother replied. "The ancient protocols are deliberately time-consuming to prevent hasty decisions."
Alpha Holland's expression was grim but determined. "Then we have forty minutes to gather as much intelligence as possible. Miles, coordinate with the Storm Strider scouts. Brodie, maintain contact with Sera and our medical team watching Violeta."
"And us?" Nickolas asked, his hand still firmly holding Ioannis's.
Alpha Holland studied them both, his gaze lingering on his daughter with paternal concern before shifting to the strategic reality they faced. "I need you both to prepare for a possible meeting with Alpha Darkwood. If Sera finds the evidence we need, we'll have to move quickly to present it before Marcus can interfere."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's immediate strategic assessment of this assignment, both the honour it represented and the danger it entailed. Meeting with Forest Mountain's Alpha directly would place them at the heart of enemy territory, but it might be their only chance to prevent catastrophe.
"We'll be ready," Nickolas assured Alpha Holland, his voice steady despite the concern Ioannis could feel rippling through their bond.
Luna Holland approached, adjusting the ceremonial pin in Ioannis's hair with a touch that conveyed both maternal affection and practical purpose. "Remember," she murmured, "the tip contains enough sedative to incapacitate an Alpha-level wolf. Use it only if absolutely necessary."
Ioannis nodded, the weight of the seemingly decorative hairpin suddenly more noticeable against her scalp. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective instincts flaring at the reminder of potential danger, though he maintained his outward composure.
"What about our formal attire?" Ioannis asked, glancing down at their current clothing. "If we're meeting with Alpha Darkwood, protocol would demand..."
"I've already arranged for appropriate ceremonial garments to be prepared," Luna Holland replied with a slight smile. "Your mother anticipated this possibility."
Alpha Holland's expression softened briefly as he glanced at his mate. "She anticipates most possibilities. It's why we've survived this long."
A soft chime from Brodie's phone interrupted the moment. His eyes widened as he read the incoming message. "Sera's found something," he reported, his voice tight with suppressed excitement. "A hidden compartment exactly where Garrett described. She's accessing it now."
The tension in the room thickened. Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's focus sharpen to predatory intensity, his mind already calculating next steps if Sera's mission succeeded.
"The scouts have reached the observation point near the research facility," Miles added, looking up from his own phone. "Visual confirmation of Forest Mountain warriors meeting with uniformed humans. They're sending encrypted images now."
Alpha Holland moved swiftly to a secure tablet, activating it with a complex gesture. The screen illuminated with night-vision imagery, three Forest Mountain warriors in discussion with what appeared to be military personnel near a nondescript building. The humans were handling what appeared to be specialised equipment, demonstrating something to the watching werewolves.
"Those are Marcus's elite enforcers," Nickolas observed, his voice low as he studied the images. "His most trusted inner circle."
"And those aren't just any military personnel," Luna Holland added grimly. "Those insignias indicate a special operations division." She pointed to specific markings on the uniforms. "These aren't regular military, they're from a classified research branch specialising in unconventional warfare."
Ioannis studied the images, a chill spreading through her as she recognised the implications. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's tactical mind cataloguing details, the equipment cases, the positioning of guards, the deferential body language of Marcus's warriors.
"They're not equals in this exchange," she observed quietly. "Look at how his enforcers are standing, slightly hunched, heads lowered. They're subordinate to the humans."
"A preview of what Marcus is offering for all packs," Alpha Holland said grimly.
Another chime from Brodie's phone cut through the tense silence. His eyes widened as he read the message, a rare expression of genuine shock crossing his usually mischievous features.
"Sera's found the documents," he reported, his voice uncharacteristically serious. "And something else. Marcus has been keeping detailed records not just of his human contacts, but of pack members across all nine territories who've agreed to serve as informants after the transition."
