Chapter 55
"Already done," Nickolas replied, showing her a message on his phone. "She's proceeding with infiltration. Marcus's absence has created exactly the opportunity we needed."
Luna Holland's expression was grave as she processed the information they'd just uncovered. "This goes beyond territorial ambition. Marcus is attempting to restructure werewolf society, with humans as overseers fundamentally."
"Which no Alpha would willingly accept," Federico observed grimly. "Not even his own."
"Hence the challenge as distraction," Nickolas concluded. "He needs a public conflict to mask the real power transition."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt his tactical mind reassessing every aspect of their strategy. This wasn't just about defending against Forest Mountain's aggression; they were facing an existential threat to werewolf autonomy itself.
"We need to accelerate our timeline," she said, her artistic intuition sensing the urgency. "If Marcus's human contacts are already nervous, they might have contingency plans. We need to expose Marcus to his Alpha before those plans can be implemented," Ioannis said urgently.
Alpha Holland nodded, his expression resolute. "Agreed. The ceremonial sealing will keep Marcus occupied for at least the next hour. That gives us a narrow window to act."
"What about the challenge itself?" Jordyn asked. "If we expose Marcus before dawn, the challenge becomes unnecessary."
"But potentially valuable as misdirection," Nickolas countered, his thumb absently stroking the back of Ioannis's hand as his tactical mind worked through the implications. "If Marcus believes we're still focused on the formal challenge, he won't anticipate our real moves."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt his thoughts racing, calculating risks and advantages with lightning precision. His concern for her safety remained a constant undercurrent, but it was now balanced with recognition of the broader threat they faced.
"We need multiple contingencies," Luna Holland suggested, her silver regalia catching the torchlight. "If Sera succeeds in retrieving the documents, we expose Marcus to his Alpha immediately. If she fails, we proceed with the challenge while implementing secondary measures."
Brodie glanced up from his phone. "I've arranged for the medical team to 'check' on Violeta. They'll swap the device while appearing to adjust her medication."
"Good," Alpha Holland approved. "And our surveillance will continue. If Marcus attempts any other communications, we'll know."
A soft chime from Miles's phone drew their attention. His eyes widened as he read the incoming message. "Sera reports unusual activity at Forest Mountain. Several high-ranking warriors are departing secretly, heading west, away from our territories."
"West?" Federico frowned. "There's nothing in that direction except..."
"The human military research facility," Nickolas finished grimly. "The one that supposedly doesn't exist on official maps."
Ioannis felt a cold realisation spreading through her. Through their bond, Nickolas's alarm matched her own. "He's not waiting for the challenge," she whispered. "Whatever he's planned with the humans is already in motion."
Alpha Holland's expression hardened. "Federico, you and Jordyn need to attend the ceremony as expected. The rest of us will coordinate our response to this new development."
As Federico and Jordyn departed for the ceremonial sealing, the remaining group huddled closer, voices dropping to a whisper to ensure privacy.
"If Marcus has warriors meeting with human military officials now, what's the purpose of the challenge observation in two days?" Luna Holland asked, her silver eyes narrowed in thought.
"Verification," Nickolas suggested, his storm-grey eyes distant as he worked through the implications. "The humans want proof that werewolves actually exist as described, and that the combat capabilities Marcus has promised them are real."
"A demonstration," Ioannis realised, horror dawning as the pieces clicked together in her artistic mind. "They're using the challenge as a live demonstration of werewolf capabilities. They would then decide based on DNA how to give them the strongest bloodlines through a forced breeding program, never to find your true mate, unable to shift unless you're allowed and when.”
The pieces fell into perfect clarity in Ioannis's mind like one of her artworks suddenly revealing its true form. Her stomach twisted as the full horror unfolded before her.
"They're not just looking for control," she said, the dual pendants suddenly heavy against her skin. "They want to weaponise us. Study our healing, our strength, our pack bonds—everything that makes us what we are."
Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's fury building like a gathering storm, his thoughts darkening with protective rage. His fingers tightened around hers as they processed this existential threat.
"We need to contact Alpha Darkwood directly," Luna Holland said, her silver regalia catching the torchlight as she straightened. "If Marcus is truly acting without his knowledge, the Alpha has the right to know before his pack is compromised."
Alpha Holland nodded grimly. "I have channels, old alliances that predate even Marcus's time as enforcer. But we'll need proof beyond our accusations."
"Which means Sera's mission is now our highest priority," Nickolas stated, his storm-grey eyes hardening with determination.
Brodie's phone chimed softly. He glanced at the screen, his usual mischief replaced by focused intensity. "Medical team reports success. The device has been replaced with our non-functional duplicate. Violeta suspects nothing."
"What about the original?" Miles asked, leaning forward with uncharacteristic seriousness.
"Being analysed now," Brodie replied. "Preliminary assessment suggests it's a resonance disruptor, vibrates at a frequency that destabilises mountain ash barriers."
Nickolas's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Human technology adapted for supernatural purposes. Another indication of how deep Marcus's collaboration goes."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt his tactical mind calculating furiously, reassessing their strategy with each new piece of intelligence. She squeezed his hand, drawing strength from their connection while offering her own.
"The food truck team needs to be warned," she said. "If the human observers have military-grade surveillance equipment, our people could be at greater risk than we anticipated."
"Already handled," Miles confirmed, holding up his phone. "Jake's adjusting the setup to provide better cover. The serving staff will all be wearing specialised protection beneath their uniforms."
Alpha Holland's expression grew resolute. "We need to accelerate our timeline. If Marcus has warriors meeting with human military now, whatever they're planning could happen before the challenge even begins."
"We could use that to our advantage," Ioannis suggested, her artistic mind suddenly seeing a new pattern in the chaos. "If Marcus believes we're still focused solely on the challenge preparations, he won't anticipate us moving against his human connections directly."
