Chapter 57
"Traitors," Luna Holland whispered, her silver eyes hardening. "In every pack."
"Names?" Nickolas asked sharply.
Brodie nodded, still reading from his phone. "Sera's transmitting the list now. It's... extensive. Including some from both our packs."
Alpha Holland's expression darkened. "We'll deal with our own house once this immediate threat is contained. What about evidence of Marcus's human connections?"
"Comprehensive," Brodie confirmed, scrolling through the information. "Dates, locations, specific agreements. Everything was documented in that pre-unification cipher, just as Garrett described. Sera confirms she can translate it fully."
"And she can authenticate the documents?" Luna Holland pressed.
"Already done," Brodie replied. "She says the handwriting matches other samples of Marcus's writing she's examined. The documents are genuine."
Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's surge of grim satisfaction. They had what they needed, concrete proof of Marcus's betrayal, enough to take directly to Alpha Darkwood.
"Where is Sera now?" Alpha Holland asked.
"Extracting safely," Brodie reported. "She's using a secondary exit route, avoiding all patrol patterns. She'll reach the designated dead drop point before the ceremonial sealing concludes."
"Which means we need to be ready to move immediately," Nickolas said, his storm-grey eyes meeting Ioannis's with shared determination. "Once we have those documents in hand, we have a narrow window to reach Alpha Darkwood before Marcus realises what's happened."
Luna Holland moved to a concealed cabinet and retrieved a sealed package. "Your ceremonial attire," she explained, handing it to Ioannis. "For the meeting with Alpha Darkwood. Everything has been prepared according to ancient protocol for formal accusations.”
Alpha Holland nodded with grim determination. "Once you're dressed, take the eastern passage to the rendezvous point. Federico has arranged secure transport that will get you to Forest Mountain territory without detection."
Ioannis accepted the package, the weight of their mission settling over her like a mantle. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's mind already calculating routes, security risks, and contingency plans. His concern for her safety remained a constant undercurrent, but it was now matched by his recognition of her diplomatic capabilities.
"What about Marcus?" she asked. "He'll notice our absence from the ceremonial proceedings."
"Leave that to us," Luna Holland replied with a slight smile that held little warmth. "The twins have prepared a rather convincing diversion that should keep his attention firmly fixed here."
Brodie and Miles exchanged identical looks of mischievous anticipation, momentarily lightening the tense atmosphere.
"Nothing explosive," Alpha Holland warned, though his tone suggested this was a frequent and necessary reminder.
"Technically not explosive," Miles clarified. "More of a controlled chemical reaction with impressive visual effects."
"That coincidentally resembles an explosion," Brodie added helpfully.
Nickolas sighed through their bond. Ioannis felt his mixture of exasperation and reluctant appreciation for the twins' unique skills. "Just make sure it doesn't violate the truce conditions," he cautioned. "We need to maintain protocol until we've secured Alpha Darkwood's support."
"Trust us," Miles said, his expression suddenly serious despite the gleam in his eyes. "We understand exactly what's at stake."
The gravity of their situation settled over the group again. Through their bond, Ioannis felt Nickolas's mind shifting through contingencies, preparing for every possible outcome of their dangerous mission.
"We should change," she said quietly, her fingers tightening around the ceremonial package. "Time is our most limited resource now."
Alpha Holland nodded, his expression softening slightly as he looked at his daughter. "Be careful," he said simply. "Both of you."
As they moved toward the adjoining chamber to change into their ceremonial attire, Ioannis felt the weight of responsibility settling more firmly on her shoulders. Through their bond, Nickolas's steady presence anchored her, his strategic mind working through each potential challenge they might face.
The ceremonial garments were both beautiful and practical, traditional enough to satisfy protocol for a formal accusation, yet designed for ease of movement in the event of flight or fight. Ioannis's ensemble incorporated subtle armour beneath flowing fabric in Eternal Eclipse blue, while Nickolas's Storm Strider grey included hidden weapon sheaths and reinforced panels.
"Your mother thinks of everything," Nickolas observed quietly as they dressed.
"She's had years of diplomatic crises to perfect her preparation skills," Ioannis replied, securing the ceremonial hairpin that doubled as a weapon. "Though I suspect this situation exceeds even her extensive experience."
Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective gaze upon her as she adjusted the final elements of her attire. His eyes held equal measures of pride and concern.
"You're thinking about what might happen if Marcus realises what we're doing before we reach Alpha Darkwood," she said, not needing to look up to know the expression on his face.
"Am I that transparent?" he asked, a small smile softening his serious features.
"Only to me." She touched the dual pendants at her throat, drawing strength from their warmth. "And only because our bond lets me feel the strategic calculations running through your mind."
Nickolas moved closer, helping her secure a delicate silver chain that would hold her ceremonial cape in place. His fingers lingered at her shoulders, the touch conveying what words couldn't.
"If he realises what we're doing, he'll send his remaining enforcers to intercept us," he said quietly. "But the documents alone might not be enough. Alpha Darkwood has trusted Marcus for years. We need to present our case in person to ensure it's taken seriously."
"Then we'll make sure we reach him," Ioannis said with determination. "We have to."
A soft knock at the door interrupted them. Miles entered, his expression uncharacteristically serious.
"Sera's reached the extraction point," he reported. "The documents are secure at the dead drop. Our retrieval team is moving into position now."
"How much longer will the ceremonial sealing keep Marcus occupied?" Nickolas asked.
"At least twenty more minutes," Miles replied. "Federico is deliberately extending certain portions of the ritual to buy us more time."
"And the diversion?"
A hint of Miles's usual mischief flickered across his face. "Ready to deploy the moment you're clear of pack territory. It will appear that a perimeter breach has occurred on the western boundary, exactly opposite from your actual route."
Nickolas nodded approvingly. "Good. That should draw Marcus's security focus away from our movement."
"Transport is waiting at the eastern exit," Miles continued. "Jordyn's most trusted warriors, disguised as a standard patrol. They'll get you to the rendezvous point where you'll meet Sera for the document handoff."
Ioannis fastened the final elements of her ceremonial attire, the weight of their mission settling more firmly on her shoulders with each passing moment. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's mind shifting through contingencies, preparing for every possible outcome.
"What about our informants within Forest Mountain?" she asked, her artistic intuition suggesting this critical detail. "If we're going to confront Alpha Darkwood directly, we need someone inside his inner circle to ensure we get an audience."
"Already arranged," Miles confirmed. "Federico's contact, the Beta who reached out after the attack on your ceremony, will ensure Alpha Darkwood receives you. He's positioned himself as duty officer for the night specifically to facilitate your entry."
