Chapter 50 50
Chapter 50 50
CAMILLA'S POV
Soon after Axel left, I also decided to abandon the food and retire to my room. The mere thought of her had caused me to lose my appetite from the beginning anyway. I navigated my way through the palace until I reached my door, about to step in but some murmuring from the next door caused me to halt.
I lifted my finger away from my doorknob and slowly moved toward the next door, pressing mu ear against it with no hesitation.
“You should take the herbs seriously.” I heard a voice speak. “They are going to help with growth and overall health.”
“They are just not nice to taste.” I heard Valeria’s familiar voice complain.
“You should know the herbs pregnant women outside the palace had to take, yours are a bit merciful you know.” the other voice again.
Pregnant women?
My frown deepened as I listened to the closed door. It cannot be that. It simply cannot be. I must have made the wrong assumption. If she is pregnant, that sure as heck will complicate everything.
“I should ask Axel.” those were the first coherent words that sounded in my head. Nothing is going on in Lucius’s life that Axel is not informed about. He would know for sure if that bitch is with a child.
I moved to put them to action, dashing down the hallways toward the large entrance and hoping he hadn't stepped out yet.
I was late. When I reached the entrance, the guards made it clear to me that they had left close to half an hour ago. There was no need to follow behind a troop of fighters just so I could ask their commander a question about the King’s mate. That sure as heck wouldn't look great on my reputation. I will have to find a better way to get things on my palm.
Maybe it was even a better idea that Axel had left. What I want to do if she is really pregnant isn’t something anyone should suspect me of, not even Axel himself. And finding out she is pregnant through him will sure as heck cause a lot of raised eyebrows.
I walk back into the palace, my steps more preserved than when I walked in. I placed my hand behind my back and silently found my way back to the room. Her door was still closed and I could still hear the silent murmur of the woman.
I entered my room, left the door open, and waited for her to step out. After what felt like eternity, she finally stepped out of the room, a healer. Someone I sure as heck recognized. I was hoping it would be someone entirely different, someone I could threaten the truth out of.
I kissed my teeth in frustration and got up nonetheless, going straight toward her as she closed Valeria’s door behind her.
“Oh, Camilla?” The elder woman’s voice was laced with excitement as she called out to me. She has been a healer in this palace for as long as I can recall. She is from a family of healers who were known to serve the kings of this palace for generations. “I heard you were back? Didn't get to meet you. Welcome back.” She bowed curtly and I smiled.
“Thank you, it’s been so long since we met.” We trailed down the hallway together.
“Right? Almost a decade. I was getting worried you were never going to show up here again.”
“Not unless I died, you know I would. Not when my heart is still back here.” I wasn't even sure if that response was meant for her, but I had to let it out anyway.
“Uhmm..” She mumbled something under her breath which I didn't quite catch and never bothered to ask. My concern was a different thing and I had to make sure I brought it up before she reached the healer's chamber. The last thing I wanted was to set foot in that disgusting part of the palace.
“I heard you in Valeria’s room.” Saying her name out loud felt like a direct punch in the gut. “Is she seeking or something?”
“Yeah yeah, the poor girl has been having lots of trouble with her back. She must have hit it a little too hard during the kidnap attempt. His Majesty said I should check up on her and make sure she is not in any form of danger.”
“Oh…I thought she was pregnant or something. I mean it’s high time she should be, right? I heard they have been together for a pretty long time.” I blurted out before I could stop myself but I knew that was the best thing to do. If you want so much out of them, you have to speak much too.
“Not really.” She tugged at her healer’s bag that was beginning to slip off her shoulder. “There is no sign of pregnancy in there, just a twisted muscle issue I guess. But she will be fine, I will make sure of that.” She bowed again.
I smiled with restraint, wanting desperately to bring up the “growth and overall health she mentioned earlier.” but I found myself holding back for the sake of my reputation. To them, I am a well-respected gentle woman, eavesdropping is not among the things I should be engaged in.
“I have to check up on a wounded guard, if you will excuse me.”
“Go ahead.” I pointed forward. “Don’t let me hold you back.”
“Thank you, Camilla. It’s great to have you back.”
“It's great to have me back too.” I forced a smile despite not feeling like it and I waited until she was out of sight range before I let my face drop.
She was lying.
That bitch is pregnant and they are hell bend in hiding it from everyone. Does Lucius know about this? Of course he would, he would definitely support the notion of keeping it hidden.
It seemed I had to do much more damage control than I initially thought.
