Chapter 22 Twenty two
The morning sunlight barely touched Sophie’s office before the first sense of unease crept in. She knew it was coming. Something about Camille’s calm tone the night before had felt like a warning. Vivian had never been subtle, but Camille was precise. They were planning something.
Her phone buzzed with an email. Sophie froze. The subject line read: Important: Urgent Meeting at Steele Enterprises. She opened it cautiously.
The email contained a single message: Miss Hart, please attend a private discussion regarding recent financial irregularities at your company. Your presence is required immediately. Richard Steele expects your cooperation.
Sophie’s stomach tightened. It was a trap. Camille had orchestrated this. Vivian had given her access to old financial records and twisted the truth, hoping to make Sophie appear negligent or dishonest.
Dominic appeared in the doorway before she could call him. His dark gaze scanned her face, and he immediately knew. “They’ve baited you,” he said, voice low. “Do not respond. They are testing you. If you go alone, it will be a setup.”
Sophie closed the laptop. “I can’t ignore this, Dominic. If we let them dictate the narrative, they will never stop. We need to face it. We need to show them we are prepared.”
Dominic stepped closer, placing a hand on her arm. “Then we do it carefully. I will accompany you. Ethan stays with Mrs. Chen. You cannot risk exposing him to their schemes.”
Sophie nodded, feeling the familiar mix of fear and thrill that came whenever Dominic was near. Together, they left for Steele Enterprises, entering the towering building with a calm but vigilant presence.
Camille was already waiting in the boardroom, her polished smile in place. Vivian hovered behind her, acting the concerned matriarch. Sophie and Dominic entered, their synchronized movement revealing the unspoken trust they shared.
“Miss Hart,” Camille began, her voice smooth. “Thank you for coming. We wanted to review some discrepancies that have appeared in your recent accounts.”
Sophie held her gaze steady. “Discrepancies that I have already audited and clarified. If there is something specific, I would like to see the documents.”
Vivian stepped forward, her tone feigning concern. “We just want to ensure that everything is in order, Sophie. You understand, as part of Steele Enterprises, transparency is critical.”
Dominic’s presence was like a shield. “We are aware of the importance of transparency. Any documents should be presented clearly. Nothing will be hidden. We will not be intimidated.”
Camille’s smile flickered, but she maintained control. “Of course. We merely wish to verify that all financial activity is properly documented. Nothing personal.”
Sophie’s eyes narrowed. “Then let’s review it together. I am confident there will be no issues.”
As the documents were laid out, Sophie’s pulse quickened. Vivian had planted misleading figures and selective reports, hoping to suggest embezzlement or negligence. Sophie took a deep breath, scanning every page with precision. She had anticipated this. Every record was backed up, every number verifiable.
Dominic watched her closely, his protective gaze never leaving her. When Vivian leaned over to point at a fabricated discrepancy, Sophie calmly corrected her with exact data, tracing the numbers back to the original source.
Camille’s carefully maintained composure began to crack. “Miss Hart, you are very confident. But can you prove these transactions were authorized?”
Sophie’s eyes met Dominic’s. He nodded subtly. She turned back to Camille, her voice firm. “Yes. Each transaction is logged, approved, and reconciled. Any attempt to misrepresent these figures is invalid. You have access to every source. If you cannot verify it, the error lies with you, not me.”
The room went quiet. Vivian’s face hardened slightly. Camille’s lips pressed into a thin line, but she could not maintain the attack. Sophie’s thoroughness and calm authority left no room for manipulation.
Dominic finally spoke, his tone sharp. “If your goal was to intimidate or create conflict, you have failed. We are prepared for any attempt to deceive or manipulate. You have underestimated our capability to protect ourselves and our family.”
Camille’s eyes flashed. “This is not over, Sophie. We will find a way to expose what you have done. You cannot hide from the truth forever.”
Sophie remained composed. “The truth is already known. The integrity of my work, my family, and my life will not be undermined by fear or manipulation.”
Vivian’s mask of charm slipped for a moment, revealing the greed and frustration underneath. She caught Sophie’s gaze, but there was no fear in Sophie’s eyes. “Then perhaps you underestimate me,” Vivian said quietly.
Dominic’s hand brushed against Sophie’s back. “Underestimating us is your mistake. You have made it clear who holds power here. Your threats mean nothing.”
Camille and Vivian left the boardroom, their carefully constructed facade beginning to crumble. Sophie exhaled, her shoulders relaxing slightly. Dominic stood behind her, hands on her shoulders, providing strength without words.
Later, at home, Sophie sat with Ethan, recounting the events in a simplified way he could understand. “Some people tried to trick us, Ethan. They wanted to make us look bad, but we showed them we are honest and strong. Never forget that truth and preparation are our allies.”
Ethan nodded seriously. “I understand, Mom. We are a team. No one can beat us when we work together.”
Sophie smiled, her heart full. “Exactly. We are stronger than anyone thinks. And with your father by our side, nothing can threaten our family.”
Dominic sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “We face challenges because they are trying to test us. But every test only proves our unity. Camille and Vivian will learn that we are not afraid. We will not be broken.”
Sophie leaned against him, feeling the warmth and reassurance of his presence. “I never want to face another challenge without you. I want us to be a family that cannot be shaken.”
Dominic kissed the top of her head. “Then we will be. Nothing and no one can break what we have built. We are ready for anything.”
Outside, the city lights twinkled in the night. Within the walls of their home, Sophie, Dominic, and Ethan were united, prepared, and unbreakable. The trap set by Camille and Vivian had failed, but Sophie knew this was only the beginning. They would continue to test them, push boundaries, and attempt manipulation.
But Sophie also knew this: every attempt only strengthened them. Their family, their love, and their trust in each other were more powerful than any scheme.
And with that knowledge, Sophie felt a surge of determination. Camille and Vivian could try all they wanted, but the next moves would always be met with strategy, unity, and the quiet, unshakable power of Sophie Hart and the Steele family.
