Chapter 21 Twenty one
The following morning, Sophie sat in her office, her laptop open, reviewing the latest designs for a client in Manhattan. The light from the windows cast a warm glow across her desk, but her mind was elsewhere. Ever since the gala, she had sensed that Camille and Vivian were preparing their next move. They were not reckless—they were precise, calculated, and dangerous.
Her phone buzzed with a message. She picked it up and froze. It was from an unknown number. The text read: “We know what you’re hiding. Be careful who you trust. Some truths can ruin everything.”
Sophie’s heart tightened. Her first instinct was to call Dominic, but she restrained herself. Panicking would only play into their hands. She needed a plan.
Dominic appeared in the doorway without knocking. His dark eyes scanned her face, and Sophie saw the tension mirrored there. “What is it?” he asked calmly, but the edge in his voice betrayed concern.
Sophie showed him the message. “It’s from Camille or Vivian. I don’t know which, but they are definitely trying something. I can feel it.”
Dominic took the phone and examined it carefully. “They are trying to provoke fear. That is their tactic. They want to make you second-guess yourself, to make us doubt our decisions. We cannot give them that power.”
Sophie nodded, her hands trembling slightly. “I know. I just—this is personal now. They are targeting me directly, Dominic. Ethan too.”
Dominic’s expression hardened. “Then we respond directly. They will see that nothing they do will succeed. You, me, Ethan we are untouchable when we work together.”
Later that day, Sophie took Ethan to school while Dominic attended a board meeting. She watched him from the passenger seat, his posture calm, controlled, yet radiating an intensity that made her pulse quicken. He was always aware of his surroundings, always thinking several steps ahead, and she admired the strength that had once both terrified and enthralled her.
At school, Ethan bounded out of the car, backpack slung over his shoulders, and waved. “Mom, Dad, I’ll see you this afternoon! Don’t be late!”
Sophie smiled, her heart swelling. “We won’t, honey. Be good, okay?”
Throughout the day, Sophie’s phone remained close, every vibration causing her to tense. But nothing came, and by late afternoon, she allowed herself a small sigh of relief. It was a brief calm before the storm.
At five o’clock, she returned home to find Dominic already there. He stood in the kitchen, arms crossed, frowning at a stack of letters. “They’ve begun sending documents,” he said grimly. “Invoices, contracts, and statements from our past projects. They are trying to create the illusion that you are untrustworthy with finances and business matters.”
Sophie frowned. “That’s absurd. I have maintained my career for seven years without issue. They are grasping at straws.”
Dominic placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Exactly. That is why we need to control the narrative. If they try to involve Ethan or tarnish your reputation, we must be prepared. We respond quickly, legally, and without emotion. Emotion is what they thrive on.”
Sophie nodded, her resolve firming. “We will show them we are not afraid. We are a family. Nothing else matters.”
The next morning, the first confrontation came in person. Camille arrived at Sophie’s studio under the guise of a client, her high heels clicking on the polished floor. Vivian followed, dressed impeccably, radiating charm and menace in equal measure.
“Good morning, Sophie,” Camille said, her voice sweet but with an unmistakable undercurrent. “I heard you’re expanding your business. Impressive. I just wanted to offer advice, as someone who knows how things work in New York society.”
Sophie stood her ground, holding Camille’s gaze. “Thank you, but I prefer to handle my business myself. Advice is not necessary.”
Vivian stepped forward, her smile sharp. “Sophie, don’t take this the wrong way, but people remember the past. It has a way of catching up. You cannot erase history, no matter how successful you become.”
Sophie’s chest tightened, but she refused to give them the satisfaction of fear. “I am aware of my past. That is why I am careful. But my life is mine, my choices are mine, and my family is mine. You will not manipulate us or threaten us.”
Dominic entered silently behind Sophie, placing a protective hand on her shoulder. His presence alone was enough to silence Vivian’s smug expression. “You can speak all you want, but we know the truth. Sophie is honest, competent, and trustworthy. Anyone attempting to distort that will fail.”
Camille’s eyes narrowed. “We will see about that.”
They left with their composure intact, but Sophie and Dominic knew this was just the beginning. The first move had been made, but the game was far from over.
That night, Sophie sat with Ethan at the kitchen table, helping him with a school project. He looked up at her suddenly. “Mom, I think someone is watching us at school. I saw a lady taking pictures, but I don’t know who she was.”
Sophie’s heart skipped. “Did you see her face, Ethan?”
He shook his head. “No, she stayed behind a tree. I think she wants to know what we are doing.”
Dominic appeared behind them, placing a hand on Sophie’s back. “It doesn’t matter who it is. We are ready. Ethan will be safe, and nothing will threaten us. We will handle everything as a family.”
Sophie smiled at Dominic and then at Ethan, her chest full. They had survived so much, but now they were stronger, prepared to face threats head-on.
The next days were a careful dance of strategy. Sophie focused on her work, keeping meticulous records and documenting every interaction that Camille or Vivian attempted. Dominic handled any legal or financial implications swiftly, leaving no room for manipulation. And Ethan, intuitive beyond his years, began noticing patterns, offering small but crucial insights that helped them anticipate Camille’s next move.
One evening, as Sophie prepared dinner, Dominic approached her quietly. “Sophie, I’ve been thinking. We cannot simply react. We need to anticipate, to take control of this narrative. Camille and Vivian will continue testing us until they find an opening. We must close every door before they even knock.”
Sophie leaned against him, feeling the warmth of his presence. “Then we do it together. We have the advantage now because we know what they are capable of. We are smarter, stronger, and united. They will not succeed.”
Dominic kissed the top of her head, and Sophie felt the thrill of security she had always longed for. They were a team, and the first move by Camille and Vivian had only confirmed the power of their unity.
Outside, the city lights glittered, unaware of the quiet battles being waged within the hearts and minds of its inhabitants. But inside Sophie’s home, one thing was certain: no threat, no scheme, and no shadow from the past could break the bond of their family.
And as Sophie watched Dominic playfully tease Ethan while setting the table, she realized that the next chapter of their lives was not just about surviving the past it was about shaping a future that was theirs alone, with love, trust, and unwavering determination leading the way.
