Chapter 23 Twenty three
The gala at the city’s premier event hall was buzzing with the hum of socialites, investors, and influential figures. Sophie adjusted the hem of her gown, her hands steady even as her mind raced. Camille had somehow managed to circulate rumors questioning Sophie’s integrity, using fabricated accounts and selective leaks. Tonight, the rumors would surface publicly, and Sophie knew she had to face them head-on.
Dominic stood beside her, his dark eyes scanning the room. He exuded quiet dominance, a wall of calm strength that made Sophie feel invincible. Ethan sat at a corner table under Mrs. Chen’s watchful gaze, clutching a small notebook he had filled with observations from the past week. The boy was growing more perceptive with each passing day, sensing tension and danger before even adults noticed.
Camille made her entrance with practiced elegance. Her smile was flawless, but her eyes betrayed the calculation beneath. “Ah, Sophie,” she called, her voice carrying over the chatter. “I see you’re here. I hope you’re ready to address the concerns people have been whispering about.”
Sophie met her gaze evenly. “I’ve always been ready to clarify the truth. Rumors are easy to start, but facts are harder to dispute.”
Camille’s lips curved into a thin smile. “We’ll see how convincing you are when everyone hears what I have to say.”
Dominic’s hand brushed against Sophie’s arm. “Do not engage emotionally. Stick to the facts. Let me handle the narrative if it becomes public.”
Sophie nodded, her pulse steadying. Together, they approached the crowd that had begun to gather. Camille’s first attempt to sway attention fell flat when Dominic casually presented a clear timeline of Sophie’s professional achievements, projects, and verifiable data. He spoke with authority, leaving little room for doubt.
Sophie added quietly, her voice calm but firm, “Every project I’ve completed has been audited and verified. Nothing here is untrue, and no accusation can change that.”
Camille’s composure began to crack. Guests whispered, sensing the imbalance. Dominic’s strategic intervention had neutralized her attack. She realized that public perception was not enough to harm Sophie without evidence.
After the gala, Sophie and Dominic returned home. Sophie’s phone buzzed with a new message. Vivian’s handwriting, elegant and controlled, was unmistakable.
Meet me at the estate tomorrow. Alone. We have matters to discuss that cannot wait.
Sophie felt a chill. Vivian’s private manipulations were more dangerous than Camille’s public schemes. “Dominic,” she said, her voice tight, “Vivian is planning something behind the scenes. I need to confront her, but I cannot do it alone.”
Dominic’s eyes darkened. “Then we do it together. No schemes from her or Camille will succeed. We will anticipate, counter, and close every door they try to open. Ethan stays with Mrs. Chen while we handle this.”
Sophie swallowed, the tension coiling in her stomach. She knew Vivian’s manipulations could reach deeper than any public smear. Together, she and Dominic would need all their cunning, strength, and unity to counter what was coming next.
The next morning, Sophie and Dominic arrived at Vivian’s estate, the air heavy with the scent of expensive flowers and polished stone. Vivian greeted them with a radiant smile that did not reach her eyes.
“Darling Sophie, Dominic,” she cooed, motioning for them to sit in the sunlit drawing room. “I just wanted to have a heart-to-heart conversation. Nothing hostile, I assure you.”
Sophie remained seated, composed, while Dominic stood slightly behind her, a protective barrier of shadow and control.
Vivian leaned forward, her voice silky. “You’ve been making waves in New York society. I cannot say I approve of the way you’ve insinuated yourself into influential circles. Your success should not overshadow the Steele legacy. Don’t you agree, Dominic?”
Dominic’s jaw tightened, but he remained calm. “Sophie’s achievements are hers. No one’s legacy is threatened by truth and competence. If you have an issue, address it rationally. Accusations and manipulation will fail.”
Vivian’s smile sharpened. “Oh, I am addressing it, dear Dominic. That is why I invited you both. I have concerns about family unity, inheritance matters, and public perception. As you know, Richard always valued appearances.”
Sophie leaned forward, her voice steady. “We are aware of the stakes. But appearances do not define our integrity. We will not allow fear or manipulation to dictate our lives.”
Vivian’s eyes flickered with annoyance. She had hoped Sophie would show even the slightest unease, giving Vivian leverage. Instead, she met calculated calm, patience, and a readiness to counter her every word.
“You are so confident,” Vivian whispered, her tone sweet but venomous. “But confidence can be dangerous when one underestimates those who know your past. I only wish to protect the Steele name.”
Sophie’s gaze did not waver. “We do not underestimate anyone. But we also do not fear truth. Any attempt to manipulate me or my family will fail, just as it has in the past. You will find that unity and preparation are more powerful than deception.”
Dominic stepped closer, his presence radiating controlled authority. “Every scheme you plan will be met with strategy, foresight, and transparency. Your efforts are noted, but they will not succeed.”
Vivian rose gracefully, her mask slipping for just a fraction of a second, revealing the frustration beneath. “Then you leave me no choice. Be warned: I will continue my efforts. I will protect what I believe is mine.”
Sophie remained seated, unflinching. “Your efforts are acknowledged. But our family, our unity, and our integrity will not be compromised. Whatever you attempt, we are prepared to counter.”
As they left the estate, Dominic’s hand found hers, giving a reassuring squeeze. “She will try again. Camille will try again. But we are ready for every step, Sophie. Together.”
Sophie exhaled, relief mingled with determination. “Then we face them, all of them. I am not afraid anymore, Dominic. Not for myself, not for Ethan, and not for us.”
Dominic’s dark eyes softened as he met hers. “And you never will be, as long as we face it together. We are stronger than they will ever be.”
As they drove home, the city skyline glimmered ahead. Camille and Vivian had made their moves, but Sophie, Dominic, and Ethan had proven they were not pawns in a game they did not control. The next battle would come, sharper and more ruthless, but the family was united, ready, and resolute.
And in that unity, Sophie felt a thrill she had never known before: the power of facing fear and manipulation with strategy, love, and unwavering determination.
