Chapter 20 Twenty
The soft light of late afternoon filtered through the blinds of Sophie’s office, casting long stripes across the hardwood floor. She leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples as she reviewed the proposals for a new project. The city outside buzzed with activity, but inside, a tense quiet had settled over her. She knew that the past was never far behind, especially now that she had returned to New York.
A soft knock at the door made her start. “Come in,” she called, her voice steady despite the nervous flutter in her chest.
Dominic stepped in, his posture casual but alert. His blue eyes scanned the room before resting on her. “You’ve been at this for hours,” he said, placing a folder on her desk. “Take a break. Ethan is waiting for us in the park.”
Sophie shook her head. “I can’t. I need to finalize these plans before tomorrow. The client expects me to deliver everything tonight.”
Dominic walked closer, lowering his voice. “Sophie, you’ve done more than enough. You can trust me to handle Ethan for a while. Let him get some fresh air. You deserve a pause.”
She wanted to argue, but the way he looked at her, with concern and quiet authority, made her sigh. “Fine,” she muttered. “But just for an hour.”
Outside, the park was alive with the laughter of children and the distant hum of traffic. Ethan ran ahead, skateboard in hand, shouting gleefully as he executed a series of small tricks. Dominic followed behind, his long strides keeping pace easily. Sophie fell into step beside him, her mind half on Ethan and half on the tension she still felt from Camille’s last message.
Camille’s message had arrived that morning, innocuous at first glance. A simple email, asking Sophie to attend a charity gala in New York. Sophie had ignored it, but the subtle threat behind it had not escaped her. Camille’s carefully disguised tone implied knowledge of Sophie’s past and her child, a reminder that the past could still be manipulated if Sophie allowed it.
“Mom, look!” Ethan called, showing a successful trick that made him skid safely on the edge of the pavement. “Did you see that?”
Dominic clapped slowly, smiling. “Impressive. You’ve been practicing.”
Ethan grinned. “Of course. I want to show Dad I’m strong.”
Sophie’s heart tightened. The way Ethan called Dominic “Dad” without hesitation felt both comforting and bittersweet. She had worked hard to protect him, and now he had a father figure he could admire without fear. She glanced at Dominic, seeing him kneeling slightly to praise Ethan, a warmth on his face that rarely appeared in public.
The moment was brief, but it reminded Sophie why she had returned to New York. She had fought for this life, for her child, and for her own freedom. She could not allow Camille or Vivian to jeopardize it.
The rest of the evening passed in a blur of errands and small victories. Sophie and Dominic returned home, Ethan exhausted but happy. Once he had gone to bed, Sophie and Dominic finally had a moment alone.
Sophie sank into the couch, rubbing her temples. “Dominic, I need to talk to you about Camille and Vivian. I think they’re planning something. I can feel it.”
Dominic leaned back in the armchair opposite her, his eyes narrowing slightly. “I suspected as much when we returned. They have always been manipulative. Camille fears you, Sophie. She knows what happened seven years ago and she cannot bear that you have built a life without her influence.”
Sophie’s hands clenched. “She will try to use anything against us. My child, my career, even my reputation.”
Dominic stood, walking to her and kneeling beside the couch. His hand found hers, holding it firmly. “Then we will be ready. We will protect our family, our life, and our work. Together.”
Sophie let out a long breath, feeling a measure of comfort. “I’m tired of running from the past. I want to face it, head-on. I want us to be stronger than any scheme they throw at us.”
Dominic leaned closer, brushing a soft kiss across her forehead. “Then we will. You have my word.”
The following days brought subtle warnings that Camille and Vivian had begun their maneuvers. Emails, social invitations, and thinly veiled threats arrived regularly. Sophie stayed focused on her projects, but she could feel the tension mounting around her. Each time she sensed a trap, Dominic was there, calm, measured, and protective.
One evening, as she worked late in her office, Dominic appeared at the doorway without knocking. He wore casual clothes, but the intensity in his gaze left no doubt about his concern.
“Sophie,” he said, voice low. “I saw the latest email from Camille. She’s escalating. I think it’s time we respond directly, together.”
Sophie rose, meeting his gaze. “I agree. I can handle my work, but I won’t let them use Ethan against us. We need to show them that we are not afraid, that we are united.”
Dominic’s hand brushed hers as they walked to the living room. “We are stronger now than we were seven years ago. Everything they once used to manipulate us is meaningless. They underestimate what we have built together.”
Sophie felt a shiver of anticipation and fear. The thought of confronting Camille and Vivian directly was daunting, but she knew it was necessary. She had learned to rely on herself, but now she could rely on Dominic, too. Their bond was no longer complicated by miscommunication or mistrust.
The night of the first confrontation arrived in the form of a charity gala in the city. Sophie dressed simply but elegantly, her hair in loose waves, her presence commanding yet understated. Dominic arrived shortly after, his dark suit tailored perfectly, eyes scanning the crowd for potential threats.
Camille was already there, radiant and calculating, her smile as fake as ever. Vivian lingered nearby, glancing at Sophie with barely concealed resentment. Sophie took a deep breath and approached them, Dominic at her side.
“Camille, Vivian,” Sophie began, her voice calm and steady. “I hope you are both enjoying the evening. I also hope you realize that any attempt to manipulate, intimidate, or interfere with my life will fail. Dominic and I are united. Ethan is our priority. Nothing else matters.”
Camille’s smile faltered slightly, replaced by a flash of irritation. “Sophie, always so confident. But don’t think you can ignore the past. Some things cannot be erased so easily.”
Dominic stepped forward, his tone firm. “We are not ignoring the past. We are living in the present, and the present is ours. Any attempt to disrupt our life will have consequences you cannot control.”
Sophie felt a surge of satisfaction. Their united front was already affecting Camille and Vivian. The calculated coldness of Dominic’s stare reinforced her words. For once, she did not feel alone or vulnerable.
Later that night, after the gala, Dominic and Sophie walked home, the city lights reflecting in their eyes. “You handled that beautifully,” Dominic said softly. “I could feel the shift the moment you spoke.”
Sophie smiled, feeling warmth that had nothing to do with the weather. “We did it together. That is what matters. They cannot break us, Dominic. Not now, not ever.”
Dominic stopped, taking her hands in his. “Sophie, we have been through so much. The past seven years were hard, but I never want to face another challenge without you by my side. You are my anchor, my partner, and the mother of my son. I will not let anything threaten what we have.”
Sophie’s heart swelled. She had waited years to hear those words, to feel his certainty and commitment. She leaned into him, letting her forehead rest against his. “We are stronger together. Nothing can take that away.”
The city outside faded, leaving only the quiet strength of their bond. Ethan was asleep safely at home, their family protected, and for the first time in years, Sophie felt truly unshakable.
Dominic pulled her closer, kissing her gently. “No one can challenge us when we are united,” he murmured. “And I want every day to be like this together, with our family, facing the world as one.”
Sophie whispered in response, “Then let’s never let anything come between us again. Not Camille, not Vivian, not the past. We have what they will never understand. Love, trust, and a family that is ours alone.”
They walked the rest of the way home hand in hand, the night wrapping around them like a protective embrace. The challenges of the past could try to find them, but Sophie knew now that the future was theirs to define. Together, they could face anything.
And in that certainty, Sophie found peace, strength, and the unwavering knowledge that her life, her love, and her family were hers forever.
