Chapter 100: Taken
Chapter 100: Taken
Cameron’s P.O.V
My eyes fluttered open as the sunlight hit my face.
At first, I didn’t have any clue as to what was happening. Why was I lying outside the pack-house? That too on the floor and in the open? What on earth was going on?
And then flashes from last night came to mind. Of the party…I was dancing with Freya…and then the guards came to warn us…the fog!
“Freya!” I whispered hoarsely, sitting up on the floor. But what I saw all around me had my blood freezing in my veins.
My packmates, my friends, my parents…they were all lying on the ground beside me, unmoving and unconscious.
“Mom! Dad!” I crawled over to them as fast as I could, checking to see if they were still breathing. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw their chests moving ever so slowly. “Mom! Dad!” I shook them this time, trying to wake them up.
“Cam?” My father was the first to open his eyes. “Wh-what’s going on?”
“I don’t know.” I told him truthfully, as one by one, several others got up from the floor. “All I remember was coming outside to check the fog. Everything is blank after that.”
“The fog put everyone to sleep.”
Both of us turned towards the entrance to the pack house to find Aria and Sanaya just standing there.
“What do you mean the fog put everyone to sleep?” My father asked them on a growl, as he held my mother’s head on his lap. “Why didn’t you do anything?”
“The fog contained powerful magic, Alpha Charles.” Aria spoke calmly as she looked out at us from the safety of the pack-house. “And the spell that we had used to keep everyone protected became our prison. Someone used our own spell against us and now we are trapped inside this house, unable to step outside. Even our magic was of no use. We waited all night.”
“All night?” A sudden feeling of dread settled in the pit of my stomach. “We’ve been like this all night…Freya!”
“They took her.” Sanaya answered this time. “I don’t know who they were or how they managed to get away, but I saw Freya go deeper and deeper inside the fog, like she was following someone.”
I got up from the floor, wobbling slightly before I could steady my feet. Whatever was in that fog had done a number on all of us. But that wasn’t my main concern right now. Freya! She was missing! Someone took her!
“We need to find Freya.” I told my father.
“Yes, we do.” He nodded, before looking back at his packmates. “But first, we need to ascertain the damage.”
Freya’s P.O.V
My entire body jolted awake as the events from earlier played inside my mind.
Gasping in deep breaths, I sat up fast enough to give me a whiplash, but I fought the dark spots in my vision to look around at my surroundings.
I wasn’t in my room. This clearly wasn’t the room that I had been staying in for the last four months. But at the same time…this room didn’t feel foreign to me either. There was a familiarity to it that I just couldn’t place my finger to.
The walls were a light yellow colour, bright and airy, but the windows were covered in thick iron bars. Outside, I saw that the sun had risen and I could hear the chirping of birds. Running a hand down my face to clear the last vestiges of sleep from my mind, I slowly placed my feet on the floor and got up on slightly unsteady legs.
The first thing I did as soon as I regained my balance was to head straight for the windows. I touched my hands to the cold iron bars and looked outside. Vast stretches of forest were all I could see from this point outward, but there was no sign of the ocean. I was probably inland, but somehow, I had a feeling that I was still in Maine.
I tried to rattle the bars, but instantly felt a shock-wave travel up my arms and I let go of the bars in shock. Were these bars rigged with electricity? But most probably they were rigged with magic.
Standing back from the window, I turned around to look at the room for the first time since I had woken up. I had been so scared about where I was and how to get out that I hadn’t even looked around properly.
The queen-sized bed I had been lying on was at the centre of the room. There was a bedside table and another study table and chair on one side while the other side there was the vanity. A large cupboard lay on the opposite wall and the only door to the room was shut tight. I tried opening the door as well, only to be pushed back with another jolt of electricity that had me yelping in pain.
But just as I did, I heard the door knob rattle from the other side and soon enough, the door creaked open to reveal two very familiar faces.
I was too stunned to speak as I stared at one of them in horror. Betrayal punched in the gut, knocking the wind right out of me. I wasn’t supposed to feel this way. After all, I had known her only a short period of time. But still, I had trusted her! How could she do this to me?
“Welcome to the coven, Freya,” Mrs. Kovac told me, her face impassive as she looked at the two of us. “The Chrone would like to meet you, but I can see the two of you need to catch up. I’ll leave you alone.”
With that, Mrs. Kovac, my new teacher and possibly the witch who took me from my home, left me alone with the traitor. The one person who I hadn’t even thought could betray me.
“Hello, Freya.” She smiled a cunning smile. “Good to see you again.”
