Chapter 57 Chapter 19.3
Heaven met Desmond’s eyes with a frown. She didn’t see anger in them, only confusion. Didn’t Desmond remember that Heaven had visited him?
“I was there for three days, yet you didn’t even bother visiting me. When they brought me to the hospital, the nurses called you immediately, but why didn’t you come?!” Desmond couldn’t stop himself from raising his voice.
“I went to see you. I was the one who watched over you on your first night there. Wasn’t it me you saw? Wasn’t it me you were expecting to see? I went straight to you after I heard what happened, but I saw you and Macie. You two were hugging, so I went home because I thought maybe I wasn’t the one you needed. But I couldn’t stand not seeing you, so even if it was already late at night, I went back to the hospital. Macie wasn’t there anymore, so I stayed and watched over you the whole night. You woke up, Desmond, and you saw me. Was it Macie you were seeing during that time?” Heaven replied angrily.
Desmond fell silent.
So… he wasn’t hallucinating? It was Heaven he saw that night. Then why did Macie lie and tell him she was the one who stayed with him?
Desmond ran his hand through his hair in frustration. He couldn’t understand how he felt. He wouldn’t deny he still felt something for Macie, but Heaven was also important to him. He couldn’t hurt her.
“I understand that I’m not the one you need. I’m not the one you were hoping to see. I went back to you but Macie was already there. I didn’t have the courage to approach you because I didn’t want to interrupt the two of you.” Heaven said blankly, coldly.
She was about to walk away when Desmond wrapped his arms around her from behind. Heaven secretly felt a sting in her heart. She didn’t know what Desmond truly felt for her.
“I’m sorry… I thought I wasn’t important to you anymore. I waited… I waited for you to visit me in the hospital. I didn’t know Macie had already come back. I thought you didn’t care, so I let her take care of me.” Desmond whispered. Heaven took a deep breath and faced him, giving him a small smile.
“I know you still have feelings for Macie. You don’t have to force yourself. I want you to think things through… I don’t want to see you hurting, Desmond. During the time we spent together, I learned to love you even though I knew your heart still belonged to someone else. I’m sorry if I only visited you once. Believe me, I wanted to visit you, I wanted to know how you were. I couldn’t sleep properly because I kept thinking of you. Remember this, I love you. I want to be selfish, even just this once… but how can I fight for you when she’s still the one in your heart?”
Desmond couldn’t answer. He just stared into Heaven’s eyes.
During their time together, he knew his feelings for Heaven were real… but he was still thinking about Macie. He was confused. Yes, Macie had betrayed him once, but he had also betrayed her by getting another woman pregnant. He didn’t want to hurt either of them. His mind was a mess.
“Desmond.”
He turned to see Macie inside the house. Heaven looked down and walked away. Desmond looked at her, wanting to chase her, but his body felt frozen.
Macie approached Desmond. He looked at her blankly, feeling no excitement at all.
“What are you doing here?” he asked. Macie hugged him tightly. Desmond tried to feel if there was still any spark left, but her embrace meant nothing to him now.
Heaven could only smile bitterly from afar when she saw them hugging.
“I miss you… I miss you so much. Why didn’t you tell me you were already discharged? I would’ve driven you home.” Macie said sweetly.
Macie looked into his eyes, but there was no excitement in them. She leaned in to kiss him, but Desmond pulled away. It felt wrong, this was his and Heaven’s home. He didn’t want to disrespect their marriage.
“Don’t you miss me? Aren’t you happy I’m here?”
“Leave, Macie. It’s not good for anyone to see you here. I’m married.” Desmond said firmly.
Macie frowned.
“I know… but you brought me here before. Why not now? Do you like her already? Have you forgotten about me? That’s impossible. We’ve been together for five years, Desmond. You waited five years for me… and if you propose to me again now, I won’t reject you. I’ll marry you.”
Desmond’s expression remained cold.
He knew he should be happy, Macie was finally choosing him. But he felt nothing.
“I’m married, Macie. I’m already married. Why would I propose to you?” he said.
Macie’s heart tightened. Anxiety washed over her, what if Desmond had indeed fallen for Heaven? What if Heaven was the one he would choose?
She tried to hug him again but he pushed her away.
“I’m tired, Macie. Go home. I want to rest.” Desmond turned around and went inside their bedroom. Heaven was startled to see him enter. She quickly looked away.
Desmond sat on the bed and laid his head on Heaven’s lap. He even kissed her belly.
“I just want to rest.” he said with a small smile. Heaven smiled back and nodded. She ran her fingers through his hair, and Desmond didn’t stop her.
Heaven wondered what Desmond and Macie had talked about. Meanwhile, Macie followed Desmond and peeked inside the room. She saw him lying comfortably on Heaven’s lap. Her fists clenched.
She wouldn’t allow Heaven to take the man she loved.
