Chapter 56 Chapter 19.2
Heaven couldn’t sleep properly, her mind restless as she worried about her husband’s condition. She checked the time, eleven in the evening, but she still didn’t feel even a hint of sleepiness.
“Macie’s there anyway. I’m sure she won’t leave Desmond alone,” she whispered to herself before closing her eyes again.
Minutes passed, yet sleep still wouldn’t come. She finally sat up, grabbed a jacket, and stood. She wanted to see Desmond, to make sure someone was with him.
She had already informed Desmond’s parents about what happened, but they were out of the country. Heaven drove back to the hospital. She quietly opened the door to Desmond’s room, her eyes scanning the space, but Macie was nowhere to be seen.
She approached Desmond, who was sleeping deeply. He had a bandage around his head from the injuries he sustained. Heaven smiled faintly and gently touched his cheek. She breathed out in relief, he looked okay.
Heaven sat on the chair beside his bed, waiting to see if Macie would return. But an hour went by, and still, she didn’t come back.
When Desmond finally woke up, his face softened at the sight of Heaven. He reached out and held her hand.
“I thought you wouldn’t come. I’m sorry for making you worry. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine,” Desmond whispered. Heaven smiled softly and caressed his cheek.
“I’m here. Get some rest,” she said. Desmond wanted to talk more, but sleep overtook him. Heaven stayed awake to watch over him, but her large belly made it impossible to sleep even in the chair.
The next morning, she left early to buy food for herself and Desmond. But when she returned, Macie was already in the room, helping Desmond sit up.
Heaven quickly stepped out. She wondered if Desmond even needed her anymore. She knew Macie wouldn’t neglect him. Besides, she was exhausted, she hadn’t slept a single minute while watching over him.
Desmond looked at Macie with a frown. He wondered if he had only imagined Heaven’s presence last night. He knew he saw her, but why was Macie the one with him now?
“Were you the one who stayed with me all night?” Desmond asked.
Macie looked at him as she arranged the food she bought, wondering if Heaven had come to the hospital at all.
“Of course. I stayed with you. Who else would it be?” she lied.
Desmond knitted his brows together. He had been so sure Heaven was the one who watched him through the night, yet he woke up to Macie.
Meanwhile, Heaven decided to go home. But before she could leave the hospital grounds, Macie called out to her. Macie hurried outside, determined to confront her. She knew Heaven was the one Desmond saw last night.
“Are you planning to visit Desmond? Don’t come back. I’ll be the one taking care of him. Know your place, Heaven. We both know Desmond only married you because you got pregnant,” Macie sneered.
Heaven’s jaw tightened. Macie wasn’t wrong. Heaven herself wasn’t sure anymore what Desmond truly felt for her. Remembering how Desmond and Macie were embracing last night, she couldn’t deny the truth, she wasn’t the one Desmond needed.
“Don’t come back here. Desmond will still choose me. Know your place before you end up hurting yourself. Don’t wait for Desmond to be the one to throw you out,” Macie said.
Heaven simply nodded and walked away with the food she bought.
At home, she broke down crying, loud, aching sobs that echoed through the empty house, where no one could hear her pain. She felt sharp needles stabbing through her heart. She wanted to let it all out, all the hurt inside her.
When she finally tired herself out, she sat blankly, one hand resting on her belly. She remembered how happy she had been these past days, believing Desmond’s affection for her was real. She never thought there would come a day when Macie would return. She accepted that Desmond would choose Macie again. But it still hurt, because she had fallen in love with him.
Two days later, Desmond was discharged from the hospital. He couldn’t help but feel angry, Heaven didn’t visit him even once after that first night. He returned to their house and saw Heaven in the living room, but he walked right past her and went straight to their bedroom.
Heaven assumed he wasn’t feeling well. She didn’t know today was his discharge day.
She cooked a meal for both of them despite her large belly. When Desmond entered the kitchen, he saw the food already served.
“I cooked your favorite. Please eat,” Heaven said gently.
Desmond didn’t reply. He sat down silently and ate. Heaven forced a small smile. It felt like Desmond had changed. She understood, he didn’t need her anymore because Macie was back.
“Are you feeling okay? How’s your condition?” she asked.
“I’m fine. Macie took care of me until I was discharged,” Desmond replied.
Heaven’s heart tightened, but she forced another smile. She was satisfied just knowing he was alright.
After eating, Heaven stood up, placing her hand on her belly as the baby kicked. Desmond glanced at her. He wanted to approach her, but anger pulsed in him. She had abandoned him at the hospital at least that’s what he believed.
Desmond gathered the dishes and placed them in the sink.
“I’ll clean this up. Go rest,” he said coldly.
Heaven nodded and walked to the living room. When Desmond finished cleaning, he approached her.
“Why?” Desmond asked abruptly. Heaven looked up at him.
“Why didn’t you visit me at the hospital? Not even once?” Desmond demanded.
