Chapter 55 Chapter 19.1
It was already late at night, but Desmond still hadn’t gone home because their meeting took longer than expected. He told Heaven to go ahead without him. He could see how troubled Heaven had been these past few days. He didn’t know how to bring back the genuine, sweet smile she used to have on her lips.
He decided to buy flowers. He searched for a flower shop that was still open and, when he found one, he got out of the car and chose the most beautiful bouquet. He couldn't help but smile as he looked at the flowers on the passenger seat. He hoped Heaven would like them, maybe he’d finally see her real smile again.
Heaven smiled at him, yes, but it never reached her eyes. Desmond thought about what food he could bring home too, hoping it would make her feel a little happier.
When he saw the traffic light turn red, he slowed to a stop. He picked up the bouquet and smelled it, letting out a deep sigh. It felt like he still didn’t know his wife as well as he should. He didn’t even know what her favorite flowers were. He didn’t know if she’d like what he chose at all.
Desmond closed his eyes for a moment when a sudden glare of bright light hit him. He raised his hand to block it so he could see what was in front of him. The traffic light was still red, but his eyes widened the instant he saw a huge truck speeding toward him.
He tried to reverse, but it was too late, the truck slammed straight into him.
The bouquet fell to the floor of the car. Desmond’s head struck the steering wheel. A wave of dizziness washed over him as pain shot across his forehead.
“H-Heaven… Daryl…” he whispered weakly, thinking of his wife and unborn child waiting for him at home. He struggled to stay conscious, but his vision was spinning. His car was crushed between the truck and the vehicles behind him.
He wanted to get out, but there was no way, the doors were jammed shut. Everything was mangled. He tried to reach for his phone, but he had no idea where it flew during the crash. He wanted to call Heaven, but even his seatbelt wouldn’t budge.
Meanwhile, Heaven had been waiting for Desmond all this time. She checked her phone again, the last message he sent said he was already on his way home. She looked at the time, two hours had already passed since that last message.
Heaven placed a hand over her chest as uneasiness crept in. She took a deep breath and called Desmond, just wanting to make sure he was really on his way.
“Where are you? Why aren’t you answering my calls?” she asked anxiously. Desmond always answered her calls, so the silence terrified her.
Her phone rang. She immediately answered, thinking it was him.
“Where are you? I’ve been calling you over and over—”
“Ma’am, this is from the nurse station. You’re listed as Mr. Velasquez’s emergency contact. He was brought here after being involved in a major accident earlier.”
Heaven quickly grabbed her car keys and rushed out of the house. Her hands trembled as she gripped the steering wheel. Even though fear consumed her, she forced herself to stay calm, she needed to reach Desmond safely. Tears blurred her vision.
She wiped her eyes and took another deep breath. When she arrived at the hospital, she immediately searched for Desmond’s room. She hurried inside, only to see that Desmond wasn’t alone.
“Why did you take so long?” she heard Desmond’s voice say.
Heaven swallowed hard when she saw Macie. Macie hugged Desmond, and Desmond hugged her back. Heaven stepped out of the room and peeked again. The two of them were still in each other’s arms.
Her heart felt like it was being torn apart piece by piece.
Quietly, she closed the door and turned to leave, only to find Zachary leaning against the wall, already watching her.
He glanced at Heaven’s appearance, she was still wearing house slippers, clearly rushing to get there.
“Aren’t you going inside?” Zachary asked. Heaven looked away.
“It seems like he doesn’t need me anymore,” she said quietly. Zachary stood straight and faced her, his expression serious.
“Are you going home? I’ll take you. I just want to make sure you get home safely.” Heaven nodded and walked ahead. Zachary followed behind her. He knew Macie was inside that room. He wanted to punch Desmond, but he stopped himself, Desmond was injured enough already.
“Are you sure you don’t want to see him? You’re the legal wife, Heaven. Check on him yourself so you’ll know he’s okay,” Zachary said. Heaven shook her head. She wanted to see Desmond, she did, but she was terrified of facing the truth that maybe she wasn’t the one he needed anymore.
Heaven stayed quiet the entire way home, her heart still aching from the sight of Desmond holding Macie earlier.
“Do you love him?” Zachary asked. Heaven didn’t answer. Her mind was filled entirely with Desmond. “Don’t worry. I’m sure Desmond will come back to you and choose you. I know he’s slowly—”
“Don’t pity me. Don’t worry about me. You don’t have to make me feel better,” Heaven cut him off.
Meanwhile, Desmond frowned at Macie. He genuinely thought it was Heaven he saw earlier.
“What are you doing here?” his tone was cold.
Macie smiled sweetly and reached for his hand, but Desmond pulled away.
“I’m here now. I’ve decided to come back. You don’t know how much you hurt me. I told you I’d return and that we’d get married when I come back, but why did you introduce Heaven to everyone? From now on, I’m staying here. We can be together again,” Macie said cheerfully.
But Desmond didn’t feel even a trace of happiness. He should’ve—but he didn’t. Instead, all he could think about was Heaven. Ever since he woke up, she still hadn’t visited him.
