Chapter 54 Chapter 18.3
Heaven walked while staring blankly ahead as she headed to the marketing department, carrying the documents in her arms. She couldn’t shake off Macie’s words from her mind. She gently held her belly, she only had two months left before giving birth. What if Desmond left her? What if he suddenly changed? What if the man who had once been so caring suddenly became cold toward her?
Heaven snapped back to reality when her forehead bumped into something. She looked up and saw Zachary standing at the entrance of the marketing department. She had hit his hand, which he had raised to block her from bumping into the glass door.
“You seem deep in thought. Are you okay?” Zachary asked. Heaven let out a long sigh before giving him a faint smile.
“I just have something on my mind. What are you doing here? Are you looking for Desmond?” she asked. Zachary stared at her. Even though she was pregnant and her belly was big, her beauty still stood out.
“Not really. I was heading downstairs when I saw you. You were walking like a zombie, so I came ahead to the door. I already knew what would happen, you were totally out of it, and I was right, you would’ve bumped into the glass door. Is something bothering you?” Heaven shook her head. She wasn’t the type to share her problems, especially with someone she didn’t really know well.
“Just be careful next time. Remember that you’re pregnant. What if it had been the stairs in front of you? Whatever’s troubling you, try to let it go,” Zachary added. Heaven simply nodded. Zachary was about to leave when she suddenly spoke.
“You’ve known Macie for a long time, right?” she asked. Zachary turned back to her, studying her face. Heaven quickly looked away, feeling like Zachary could read her thoughts.
“Is Macie the reason you weren’t yourself earlier?” he asked.
“Never mind. I just wanted to know how long you’ve known her. Sorry, I’ll go now,” she said and turned away.
“Since the time Desmond started courting her,” Zachary answered quickly, making Heaven stop in her tracks. “I already knew her before that, but we were never close. Are you thinking Desmond might leave you for Macie?” he added.
“Of course not. I—I should go. I still need to deliver these papers,” Heaven quickly said and hurried inside the marketing department. Zachary watched her walk away, wondering what could have happened to make her think about Macie.
He didn’t know the answer to her question. He had no idea what was going through Desmond’s mind. He eventually left, and as he reached the exit, he saw Desmond coming in. He walked up to him and matched his pace.
“Why are you still here? Weren’t you supposed to leave earlier?” Desmond asked coldly.
“Do you still have any contact with Macie?” Zachary asked. Desmond stopped walking and looked at him, frowning.
“Why are you asking that?” he said irritably. He hated talking about Macie especially when there was a chance Heaven might overhear them. His wife was pregnant, and he didn’t want to upset her.
“I just want to know. Do you still talk to her?” Zachary pressed. Desmond continued walking until they reached his office.
“No. I’ve blocked her on all social media and on my phone. There’s no reason for me to talk to her anymore. You know I’m starting a family, I just want to focus on my wife and our child,” Desmond replied. Zachary nodded.
“I hope you don’t change. No matter what happens, even if you see Macie again, even if she asks you to get back together, I hope you still choose Heaven,” Zachary said. Desmond’s eyebrows drew together. He was starting to notice how concerned Zachary was about Heaven.
“Do you like my wife?” Desmond asked bluntly. Zachary let out a short laugh.
“Why would you think that?”
“You’re always bringing her up when we talk. You worry about her too much. I feel like if I ever left Heaven, you’d be the one to catch her,” Desmond said. Zachary just chuckled and patted Desmond on the arm.
“I just don’t want you to regret anything. What if you’ve already fallen for Heaven, and then you leave her thinking you’ll be happier with Macie? You may be caring for her now, you may be choosing her now but what if Macie suddenly appears in front of you? Will you still choose Heaven?” Desmond couldn’t give an answer.
The door suddenly opened, and both men turned to see Heaven.
“I’ll get going. Don’t forget to send me the documents I need,” Zachary said, smoothly changing the topic. Desmond simply nodded.
“Are you okay now?” Zachary asked Heaven as he approached her. She just nodded.
“I’ll go ahead. And please, don’t walk around spaced out next time, okay?” he said softly, giving Heaven a small smile. Desmond watched them with a deep frown, not hearing what Zachary whispered to his wife.
When Zachary left, only Heaven and Desmond remained.
“What did that idiot tell you?” Desmond asked.
“Nothing. Have you eaten?” Heaven replied, changing the topic quickly.
“I ordered us food. Are you hungry?” he asked. Heaven shook her head. She wasn’t hungry, she had already eaten a snack earlier.
Desmond pulled her gently toward the sofa. He stared at her face, sensing that something was bothering her. He could tell she had been acting differently over the past few days.
“Did you read the comments about you? Is that why you haven’t been yourself lately?” Desmond asked softly.
“No… that’s not it. I’m pregnant, Desmond. My mood changes a lot. My emotions too,” she said, making an excuse. Desmond caressed her cheek, then pulled her into a hug and kissed the top of her head.
“I asked them to delete every post about us. Don’t think about what they said. It was my decision to introduce you to everyone. You deserve to be known, Heaven. Someone like you should never be hidden,” Desmond whispered. Heaven gave a small smile and hugged him back.
She trusted Desmond. Even though she had doubts, she chose to trust him.
