Chapter 126 Chapter 42.3
Chapter 126 Chapter 42.3
I immediately walked over to them and stepped in between them before Daddy Romulo could do anything else to Desmond. I knew I was starting to look like a martyr, but what could I do? I still loved him, and I wanted to hear his side before getting angry. I didn't want to make the same mistake again.
"Heaven, thank you for loving our son, but don't do this to yourself." Mommy Shiermy pleaded. I was truly grateful for how much they cared about me, but I needed to hear my husband's explanation.
I turned to Desmond. Judging from the way he looked, he didn't even have the strength to fight back against Daddy anymore.
"What happened? Why didn't you come home? Why didn't you find a way to call me and let me know what was happening to you?" I asked. He let out a weary sigh before taking one of my hands and pressing a kiss against it.
"I'm sorry, love. I couldn't come home because I waited until Macie's condition became stable." He answered tiredly. Everyone fell silent.
"What happened? What did she do to herself?" I asked worriedly. Desmond rubbed his face before turning to face our families.
"I know all of you are angry at me because I chose to go to Macie. I wouldn't have gone if I knew she was okay. I just couldn't ignore her when I knew her life was in danger. Some men suddenly broke into the apartment where she was staying, those men assaulted her, Macie couldn't fight back against them, and when she tried to escape, they stabbed her in the side." I covered my mouth in shock after hearing what he said. I never imagined that this was what had become of Macie's life.
She used to be on top, admired by so many people. Who were those men who just barged into her apartment?
"You went to her apartment alone?" Mommy Shiermy asked, now worried that Desmond might have gotten involved too.
"No, before I went there, I asked the police to come with me so we could check on her. When we arrived, Macie was already unconscious. She was lying in a pool of her own blood. I brought her to the hospital while the police arrested the five men who entered her room. When Macie was examined, they found five DNA samples inside her." Desmond said, his voice trembling with tears, so I wrapped my arms around him.
I couldn't help but feel heartbroken over what happened to Macie. She didn't deserve any of this. Who was behind what happened to her? Why did it seem like they had no intention of letting her live?
Desmond buried his face against my neck.
"I'm sorry, I really wanted to come home last night, but I couldn't leave her. Not because I still love her, because I know you'll understand me. I'm not taking advantage of your kindness, love. I stayed by Macie's side because I wanted to make sure the doctors would take care of her. Her parents weren't here, so there was no one who could stay with her." I could feel the pain Desmond was carrying, it was as if he was blaming himself for what had happened to Macie.
"You didn't do anything wrong, this wasn't your fault, so don't blame yourself." Even though he didn't say it, I knew that was exactly how he felt. He rubbed his face again before letting out another deep breath.
"How can I not blame myself? If only I had gone the moment she called me, maybe I could've stopped what happened to her. When she called me while we were having dinner, she was still inside her room, and those men were trying to break into her apartment. If you hadn't insisted that I go see her, what would've happened to her? Maybe the only thing I would've found in that apartment was her cold, lifeless body." He answered before finally breaking down in tears.
I didn't feel jealous because he was crying over Macie. They had spent many years together, so the care they had for each other wouldn't simply disappear.
I helped Desmond sit down so he could rest for a while. Everyone had finally calmed down after learning the real reason why Desmond hadn't come home.
"How is she now?" Mommy Shiermy asked worriedly.
"She's stable now, but she still hasn't regained consciousness. She needed several blood transfusions because she lost so much blood. Her entire body also became weak because of the assault." I could only swallow hard while Mommy Shiermy covered her lips in shock.
What kind of person in their right mind could do something so horrifying to Macie?
"Have you informed her parents yet?" Mommy Shiermy asked again, and Desmond shook his head.
"I didn't have my cellphone with me last night, so I haven't been able to contact them yet. When I left the hospital this morning, Macie's manager had already arrived. Maybe she already informed Macie's parents."
"You should eat first so you can get some rest afterward." I told him, even though I was sleepy too because I had spent the entire night waiting for him to come home.
"Alright then, let's all head back to the kitchen so we can finally eat." Grandma Mariam said, and everyone followed. My siblings and Daryl had already finished eating because they stayed in the kitchen while we all went outside.
"Did the police catch the men who did that to Macie?" Mommy Shiermy asked.
"Yes, they're all at the police station now, and they're still investigating who ordered them to do it."
Silence filled the room after that. It seemed like no one wanted to ask anything else about Macie because only devil could've done something like that to her. It wasn't fair at all, what chance did Macie have against five grown men? People no longer feared the consequences of their actions. If someone had ordered them to do this to Macie, then it had to be someone powerful because they were bold enough to commit such a crime.
They believed they would eventually get away with it, but I'll make sure Macie won't have to fight this battle alone. I may have hated her before, and I may have been jealous of her, but that wasn't enough reason for us to turn our backs on her.
After we finished eating, Desmond and I went into the bedroom while Mommy and the others took care of Daryl. Desmond's family also left because they still had work to do at the company.
I lay down beside Desmond, he wrapped his arms around me before capturing my lips in a brief kiss.
"I'm sorry, love. I wish you hadn't waited for me and had just gone to sleep. I would never do anything that would hurt you. I'll never hurt you again, and I won't let us end up separated. I love you and Daryl so much, so I'll never do anything to hurt you." He said gently, making me smile as I hugged him back.
