Chapter 264

Chapter 264

William walked back to the executive floor so quickly that his assistant had to jog to keep up with him.

Two people from GKG had arrived.

They were only responsible for delivering the rings.

The three rings took four days in total and were flown over by private jet this morning, having just landed.

The sample rings were made by the designer. Though they were samples, they were exquisite enough.

This was William's first time ordering rings, so he was a bit worried the final products might not be as good as the samples.

But as the GKG staff opened the boxes, his concern disappeared.

The three rings were beautiful.

The single ring was placed alone in its box.

The pair of matching rings was placed together.

He hadn't held Evelyn's hand in a long time and didn't know her size, so he had specially asked the household staff to help measure Evelyn's ring finger.

William took out the matching rings and placed them on the velvet cloth that the staff had laid out.

His fingers paused at the edge of the cloth, his gaze falling on the two rings—the woman's ring delicate, the man's ring solid, side by side, like two people sitting shoulder to shoulder.

The staff was still talking about "the same silver ingot," "split from the middle," "crystal lattice connection," and such, but their voice grew more and more distant, as if separated by a layer of water, hazy and unreal.

Yes, that's right.

William's eyes were deep yet bright.

This is how it should be between him and Evelyn—coming from the same place, cut apart, yet forever remembering each other, able to fit perfectly back together no matter how far apart they were.

William picked up the women's ring and suddenly thought of Evelyn's fingers.

Not the feeling of holding them—they rarely held hands, and most of the time when Evelyn reached out, he would dodge away.

What came to mind were memories about those fingers. Evelyn was too thin, her fingers even thinner. Her skin was pale and delicate, the joints showing pink beneath the skin, especially in winter when it got cold—her fingertips would turn red like carrots.

She used to wear her wedding ring all the time, leaving marks on that section of her ring finger.

He didn't know when it started, but William hadn't seen a ring on that finger in a long time. However, when he first noticed, he didn't care.

Back then, all he could think about was how to nurse Amelia back to health.

Oh, right, that kidney.

William frowned, gripping the ring tightly in his hand, his heart clenching along with it.

How should he make it up to Evelyn?

She was missing a kidney, and he was the one who had personally ordered its removal.

William closed his eyes, suddenly feeling that giving her two rings wouldn't be enough to earn Evelyn's forgiveness. He had been helping the villain back then—how could two rings make up for that?

Seeing him close his eyes with his brow furrowed, clear irritation visible between his eyebrows, the staff member's flowing explanation suddenly got stuck.

"Mr. Brown, is there something you're not satisfied with?"

William opened his eyes. "No, I'm very satisfied."

The staff member studied his expression but couldn't see where his satisfaction was reflected.

When Evelyn came out of the elevator carrying a lunch box, she happened to brush past the GKG staff members.

Because they were wearing uniforms, Evelyn took a second look.

As a designer, Evelyn certainly knew about the GKG brand. She was a bit puzzled—who could get GKG staff to make a personal visit?

Soon, that question had an answer.

As she walked into William's office, she immediately spotted the two ring boxes sitting on William's desk.

"You're here."

Seeing her enter, William immediately stood up.

He didn't hide the ring boxes. Instead, he picked them up and walked toward Evelyn.

Watching his movements, Evelyn vaguely guessed something. Remembering what William had said in the room that night, her heart pounded. She wanted to back away, but behind her was the closed door—she had nowhere to retreat.

William's eyes held a smile. His gaze swept over the lunch box Evelyn was carrying, and his tone became much gentler. "You made it yourself?"

For Evelyn, bringing lunch this time was completely coerced, but actually, her unwillingness made up very little of that coercion.

Last night, when she returned from Thora's place, she received a call from Daniel.

Though they hadn't seen each other in a long time, there was no awkwardness between them.

"I'm in America right now." Daniel's voice was much more hoarse than before, but the tone hadn't changed.

"I heard from Thora before that you were at Seraphim." Evelyn was half-lying on the sofa. The TV was replaying the Solstice show from a while back. "Now you've gone to America?"

"Yes." Daniel's reply seemed a bit hesitant. After a while, he continued, "I came because of Francis."

Evelyn wasn't clear about Francis's whereabouts, so when she heard this, she just responded flatly.

"He came to America a while ago to do business and was detained by people here." Daniel's voice carried some fatigue. "I'm here now with Mr. Johnson, trying to find his exact location."

"Detained?" Evelyn was surprised and sat up on the sofa.

"The problem shouldn't be too big. The other side has been in contact with us, so it seems there's room for negotiation."

Evelyn knew what kind of work Daniel did. Hearing this, she couldn't help but worry. "That's still too dangerous. Call the police... no wait, you can't call the police either."

"Right, we can't call the police either." Daniel laughed, then comforted her. "Don't worry, I have friends here who've already helped us find some leads. We should be able to meet with them tomorrow."

Hearing this, Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief, then casually asked, "When are you coming back to the country? We haven't seen each other in a long time."

"Probably another week." Daniel's answer wasn't particularly firm. "Can't say for sure."

"I see."

"When I get back, I'll treat you to dinner." Daniel chuckled softly. "Speaking of which, how's your daughter?"

The genetic test results for Katya came out two weeks ago.

She was indeed William and Evelyn's child. With this news announced, groups condemning Amelia gradually appeared online.

However, Amelia hadn't come forward to respond to any of it.

And neither William nor Evelyn showed much concern about the results, so after a week, the buzz gradually died down. After another week, almost no one mentioned it anymore.

Daniel, who was abroad, had also been following the news, so he understood that the dead infant he had brought back was just a diversion.

Though he regretted that William had used the child to tie Evelyn down, he was also sincerely grateful that the child was still alive.

Otherwise, Evelyn would probably never be able to move past this tragedy for the rest of her life.

"She's doing great. She's just started getting greedy lately and insists on eating our adult food." When talking about Katya, Evelyn's smile grew wider.

Daniel, on the other end, could hear the smile in her voice. "Really? But she should only be about five months old, right? She can't eat yet, can she?"

"Soon." Evelyn smiled with pursed lips. "I'm trying to make baby food for her, but I don't dare give it to her yet, so I've been giving it all to Lucky."

Lucky, lying by the sofa, heard his name and lifted his head to look over. But seeing Evelyn smiling while on the phone, he knew she wasn't calling him and lay back down.

But soon after, he lifted his head again, then shook his head and trotted toward the door.
