Chapter 263

Chapter 263

The other two people who appeared at the hospital with Lavinia earlier were Jagger's nephews.

They were the sons of Gilbert Baldwin and Lonnie Baldwin, respectively.

In his early years, Jagger had some savings and influence back home, but years of the Brown family's purge had, to some extent, shaken Jagger's foundation.

The purge William carried out back then wasn't just aimed at the Brown family and others, but was done in cooperation with the government's requirements to help them gather evidence and make arrests.

Ewan was by William's side during this time; after all, what William was doing would definitely attract hatred.

Since the government required William's cooperation, they naturally had to ensure William's safety.

Initially, when the government sent people to William's side, it was actually for protection purposes, not to provide William with subordinates at all.

All of William's purges were led by the government behind the scenes.

Jagger had made his fortune through loan sharking, so naturally, he was also a target of the government's purge.

After Jagger was purged, most of his family fled abroad to avoid the risks, and Lavinia was among them.

However, Ewan didn't expect they would find Cordelia as someone to turn to, and even more strangely, Cordelia actually accepted them.

Cordelia came to America earlier than them. When she came to America, William hadn't yet taken over the Brown family, and the purge hadn't started yet.

If Cordelia hadn't left Thalassia early, she would have disappeared in that purge by William and the government, too.

"This isn't confirmed yet."

Lavinia's excitement ultimately only earned a sigh from Cordelia.

But anyone could see that Cordelia's earlier words weren't a joke. She spoke very seriously, and the grief and despair in her eyes were genuine emotions from her heart.

Ewan looked around the visitation area again and suddenly felt that Cordelia was somewhat pitiful. She was over fifty, living in a prison in a foreign country, and even... her sentence was still very long.

He still remembered Cordelia's verdict that he had looked up.

Cordelia was imprisoned two years ago. According to that year's verdict, she needed to serve fifty years, but later, due to meritorious reporting, it was reduced to thirty-four years.

She had already served two years and still had thirty-two years of prison time left.

However, although Ewan felt Cordelia was pitiful, this couldn't be a reason for him to persuade William to come to America to visit Cordelia.

When William talked about Cordelia, the irritation in his tone was completely undisguised, which actually showed that William's attitude toward Cordelia was one of disgust.

This visit ended quickly.

Ewan and Theo got out of the car in front of the villa. They planned to walk back to the villa William had prepared.

"Mr. Farley, when are you planning to return to Thalassia?"

Just as they closed the car door, they heard Lavinia in the car asking.

Theo just glanced at her, then looked at Ewan.

"In a week," Ewan answered.

"Can I go with you?" Lavinia asked.

Everyone fell silent for a moment at this question, then came Cameron's questioning first.

"Why do you suddenly want to go back to Thalassia? Didn't you say you never wanted to go back?" Cameron said anxiously, even pulling Lavinia's hand toward himself. "Can you bear to leave me alone in America?"

His actions and words were somewhat clingy, and Ewan couldn't really watch.

He turned his head, not particularly wanting to know Lavinia's answer, and called Theo to leave. But the next moment, he heard the woman's reply.

"I'm only going to see Mr. Brown. I'll be back in two days."

These words made Ewan turn around.

He stared at Lavinia without speaking.

Lavinia also looked directly at him.

"Mr. Brown may not agree to see you," Ewan still reminded her.

"It's okay," Lavinia shook her head, her expression determined.

Seeing Lavinia's resolute attitude, Ewan said no more, turned around, and called Theo to walk forward.

The news that Lavinia wanted to return home to see William was directly conveyed to William by Ewan that evening.

William received the message at 12:30 PM Thalassia time.

He wasn't clear who Lavinia was. Ewan had previously sent back an investigation about Lavinia.

But he had initially investigated Lavinia to find out Francis's whereabouts.

And Francis's whereabouts had nothing to do with Lavinia—this sentence was placed in the first line of the investigation report by Ewan.

Therefore, William only opened one page of Lavinia's investigation report and didn't continue reading at all.

When he received this message, William had even forgotten who Lavinia was.

Chase, who was eating with him, saw William freeze while holding his phone and thought there was some emergency, so he quickly took out his phone to check too.

But Chase looked through all the software and group messages and didn't find any message worth freezing over.

He licked his lips and finally asked that question.

"Mr. Brown, what happened?"

Hearing Chase's question, William came back to his senses and finally retrieved the name Lavinia from his memory.

Come to think of it, he was the one who had asked Ewan to investigate Lavinia.

"Nothing."

He casually answered Chase and looked down at the message on his phone again.

From the message Ewan sent, Lavinia had some connection with Cordelia.

William rubbed his chin, thinking that when he got back, he should find that investigation report about Lavinia that he didn't know where he'd put and take a look at it.

But soon, another matter came up.

"Mr. Brown, the people from GKG are here."

An assistant ran in through the side door of the cafeteria, interrupting William's rare cafeteria meal.

"Got it."

William wiped his mouth, casually tossing the napkin into the trash can under the table.

He hadn't finished his meal.

Not far away stood the cafeteria manager and the chef.

William quickly left the cafeteria with the assistant, leaving Chase still eating.

"Chase, didn't Mr. Brown like the food?" The cafeteria manager quickly came over with the chef. He rubbed his hands, looked at the meal that had barely been touched, his expression uneasy.

Seeing him like this, Chase didn't care at all. "It's fine. Mr. Brown likes stronger flavors; he loves spicy food."

"Spicy?" The cafeteria manager was startled and exchanged glances with the chef behind him. Both saw helplessness and relief in each other's eyes.

This really couldn't be blamed on them.

This cafeteria's cuisine was mainly light and sweet-flavored. Where could they make spicy dishes for William?

"Don't worry about it. Mr. Brown isn't hungry," Chase waved his hand. Seeing they weren't leaving, he reached out and moved the food William hadn't finished to his own tray. "Don't worry, no food wasted. I'll eat it all."

Chase had a big appetite and was familiar with William. He had guessed early on that William wouldn't be able to eat the sweet-flavored dishes, so from the very beginning, he had only taken a tiny bit of food.

"That's not what I'm talking about," the cafeteria manager waved his hands repeatedly. "Then what's with Mr. Brown? Why would he want to come eat in the cafeteria? Usually, doesn't he have his meals sent directly to his office?"

"I heard Mrs. Brown is bringing him food today. He's eating now just to tide himself over," Chase quickly finished the food on his tray, but still felt hungry.
