Chapter 262

Chapter 262

With this thought in mind, Cordelia felt the urge to see William.

Cordelia took a deep breath, furrowing her brow slightly and letting out a soft sigh.

But she also knew William wouldn't see her.

Years ago, when Giselle was seriously ill, William came to her for help, but she didn't help.

He must hate her now.

What's more, given her current situation, there was no way she could go back to Thalassia to find William. According to the verdict, she still had thirty-two years left to serve in prison.

Thirty-two years.

By the time she got out, she'd be almost eighty.

Cordelia didn't think she could live that long. She figured she'd probably die in prison, and maybe... in just a few years, she might be dead.

At this thought, Cordelia lowered her eyes slightly and tapped the table with her bent finger—once, twice, three times.

The tapping rhythm was steady and unhurried, like her heartbeat at that moment.

Those people would never let her leave prison alive. After all, dead people don't tell secrets.

There was movement on the other side of the glass window.

Cordelia looked up to see Lavinia walking in with a female guard.

But her gaze didn't linger on Lavinia. Instead, it moved past her to look behind her, with a hope in her eyes that even she hadn't noticed.

However, the person who came with Lavinia wasn't William, but two men she'd never seen before.

She immediately frowned and looked these two unfamiliar men up and down.

She didn't have much freedom in prison. Even today's visit—she'd only found out about it three hours before it started. As for who was coming, since they'd applied for a male visitor, Cordelia had gotten her hopes up.

She'd thought William had come to America, but unexpectedly, it was two people she'd never met.

Cordelia narrowed her eyes slightly. Her entire back left the chair, and she leaned forward, resting on the platform in front of her. Her whole face was almost pressed against the glass window, as if she wanted to see the people across from her more clearly.

Ewan followed right behind Lavinia through the door.

As soon as he looked up, he saw Cordelia.

Cordelia was very different from what he'd imagined. He knew Cordelia was nearly fifty, past middle age, and should show some signs of aging. But the Cordelia before him, aside from some gray at her temples, looked like she was only in her thirties.

Her eyes were almost identical to William's.

Ewan had long known that William's eye shape was inherited from the Montague family, since no one in the entire Brown family had eyes like his.

Ewan looked at Cordelia's eyes, and his wariness toward her dropped slightly. After all, looking at those eyes, it was hard for him to tell her apart from William.

But when he pulled back his view to take in Cordelia's entire face, the wariness in Ewan's heart surged back.

"Aunt Cordelia, they're Mr. Brown's people." Lavinia stood to the side, offered just this one sentence of introduction, then stepped aside and sat down.

Theo sat beside Ewan. His face was calm, his expression tight. From the moment they entered the prison, his expression hadn't relaxed.

Especially after he sat down in the visiting area, his expression became even more intimidating.

He had a scar on his face and was built like a tank. Almost from the moment he walked in, he became the focus of attention for the female guards around them.

The seemingly casual but watchful glances from all around—Theo naturally noticed them too.

But he didn't react at all. He just sat quietly beside Ewan, not joining the conversation and avoiding any eye contact with the surrounding female guards.

His cooperation clearly helped the guards relax quite a bit.

"Hello." Cordelia took the initiative to greet Ewan and the others.

There was a glass partition between them, so they couldn't touch each other at all. Basic courtesies like handshakes were useless here.

Actually, the visiting area hadn't been like this a few years ago.

But after someone used brief physical contact to pass messages or drugs, the prison urgently installed the partition walls.

Ewan nodded, not hiding his identity. "Hello, Ms. Montague. I'm Ewan Farley, Mr. Brown's assistant."

Hiding Theo's identity wasn't because there was any special reason—it was just that Cordelia really didn't need to know any more information.

And Cordelia had no objection to Ewan's concealment.

As someone who'd been in the business world for decades, she could naturally tell that of these two men, this Ewan was the one in charge.

So, after giving Theo an initial glance, Cordelia didn't look his way again. Her gaze was heavy as she stared only at Ewan.

"Ms. Montague seems to want to see Mr. Brown. May I ask what you want to see him about?"

Ewan had no interest in Cordelia, so after his brief introduction, he got straight to the point, with no intention of making small talk.

Cordelia also caught his meaning. She laughed lightly, spread her hands as if on display, and swept her gaze across the space she was in. "Mr. Farley, as you can see, my situation isn't good right now."

Ewan also followed her gesture and looked around the entire visiting area.

"Mr. Farley, do you think I want to see him to harm him? Or just to see him?" Cordelia leaned on the table again, propping herself up on her arms, and asked with a smile.

Ewan raised an eyebrow. Though he'd planned to be direct, he hadn't expected Cordelia to be this direct, too. Cordelia had even voiced all his concerns outright.

Before he could respond, Cordelia continued, "Go back and tell him his aunt is dying, and tell him to come see me."

Ewan and the others had no reaction to Cordelia's words.

But Lavinia's reaction was strong. She immediately pushed her way next to Ewan, showing her face completely to Cordelia. Her brows were tightly furrowed, worry and fear written all over her face, and even her voice carried a sob. "What do you mean by that?"

Her questioning came too suddenly.

Cordelia looked at her and sighed softly. Just as she was about to speak, Lavinia interrupted her again.

"I hope you'll live a long life. This is just a hurdle. Why are you being so negative? Don't worry, I'll definitely get Mr. Brown to come see you. Once he sees you, he'll naturally understand your pain!"

Lavinia's words were loaded with information.

And the emotions in her eyes at that moment were real and sincere, even more genuine than when she faced Cameron.

Ewan watched from the side, suddenly curious about the relationship between Cordelia and Lavinia.

According to their investigation, Lavinia was Jagger Baldwin's niece, the daughter of Jagger's sister.

And Jagger was the one who had invested money in Cordelia's company back then.
