Chapter 261
Evelyn was obviously lying.
But William didn't press further. He just looked at her intently for a moment with slightly lowered eyes, then dropped his gaze back down to the ring in his palm.
"It's fine."
He spoke up, letting the matter go.
"I don't know why you're angry, but I assume it's because of this thing," William said, looking up at Evelyn. "The ring is indeed too plain and too cheap. It doesn't look like a wedding ring."
Evelyn was stunned.
William put the ring back on.
"I chose this." He paused. "And I chose you, too."
William's words left Evelyn not knowing how to respond. She didn't even dare look him in the eyes.
Fortunately, he didn't require Evelyn to respond to what he said.
After saying that, he stood up, straightened his coat, and said with lowered eyes, "Get some rest early."
William left quickly.
Leaving Evelyn alone, clutching her wildly beating heart, at a loss.
Daryl left for the United States early the next morning.
Although William couldn't help Daryl much in the US, arranging a private jet for Daryl was something he could do.
The Johnson family certainly had private jets too, but the Johnson family's situation hadn't been great lately, so their private jet could only sit idle at the airport.
So Daryl had a good sleep on William's private jet and arrived in the US.
Having slept on the plane, he was in pretty good spirits when he landed.
As soon as the plane landed, a black sedan pulled up next to it. Someone got out of the passenger seat—a tall man with a buzz cut and healthy wheat-colored skin.
He wore sunglasses and looked up at the private jet in front of him, then raised his hand to remove them.
With the sunglasses off, his face was exposed, and looking at his face, it was clearly Daniel, who had just rushed to the US from Seraphim.
He had changed a lot. There was hardly any smile on his face, and his facial features had tightened considerably, making him look much more stern overall.
Daryl had just gotten off the plane when he first noticed Daniel.
However, he didn't recognize that this person was Daniel.
"Where's Daniel?" He casually pushed his suitcase to the man waiting by the car, turning his head left and right, trying to find Daniel.
However, this stern-faced man in front of him stopped the suitcase with his foot, lifted his eyes slightly, and said calmly, "That's me."
Daryl whipped his head around, his eyes wide open. He looked the man in front of him up and down—wheat-colored skin, big eyes. Looking closely, it really was Daniel!
"You—how did you end up like this?"
But he was still shocked, his mouth hanging open. After the initial shock exploded, came stuttering amazement.
"What have you been doing?"
Daniel frowned and touched his face, speaking almost helplessly, "The food in Seraphim is too limited. I lost weight."
He thought his change wasn't that big—he'd just lost some weight.
Besides, the long-term work had exhausted him physically and mentally. The double torture of mind and body made him not want to smile at all.
"You've had it rough."
Having been sent abroad by his family to suffer for several years, Daryl immediately empathized when he saw Daniel's expression. He patted Daniel's shoulder lightly and sighed out these words from his chest.
"You're too kind, Mr. Johnson. Just give me a raise." Daniel didn't accept Daryl's comfort but instead pushed his luck.
"Deal." Daryl agreed readily, but smiled so his eyes disappeared, like a little fox. "You know why we came to the US, right?"
Daniel nodded.
He had already put the suitcase in the car's trunk. He raised his hand and pressed down—bang—the trunk door closed.
He walked back to where he was, saw Daryl still standing there, sighed, and opened the car door. "Get in first, Mr. Johnson."
Daryl got in the car, not forgetting his earlier question.
"You haven't forgotten why we came to the US, right?"
Daniel was about to close the door and hesitated for a moment at his question, but his verbal response didn't miss a beat. "Haven't forgotten. We're here for Mr. Francis Johnson."
The Johnson family had no assets in the US.
But because of business dealings, Daniel knew many high-level American leaders, which was why Daryl had asked Daniel to come to the US with him.
They stayed in the villa of an American tycoon.
Daryl had Ewan's contact information on his phone, but he didn't plan to reach out. After all, in the US, Daniel would be more useful than Ewan.
Daniel's connections were global, while Ewan, due to various limitations, could only exert his abilities to their fullest extent domestically.
Meanwhile.
Ewan also knew that Daryl had come to the US for Francis, even bringing Daniel along.
However, he didn't have time to worry about Daryl. At this moment, he was riding in a car with Theo to the prison visitation area. Sitting beside them were two other people.
One was Cameron, the other was Lavinia.
This was Ewan's first time observing Lavinia up close.
Actually, the first time he saw Lavinia, Ewan understood why Cameron would rather fall out with Tristan than be with Lavinia.
From her appearance, Lavinia looked very pleasant—the kind that grows on you. Her overall temperament was gentle, and she looked harmless.
However, Ewan never judged a person by their appearance alone.
So he also observed how Lavinia handled things and her eyes, and had a vague guess in his heart.
Lavinia wasn't a harmless, innocent flower.
Her eyes weren't pure, not even kind. Or rather, it was hard to see any compassion in her eyes.
Ewan pursed his lips and crossed his arms over his chest. This Cameron had been badly fooled by Lavinia.
Theo sat beside him with his eyes closed, resting.
He had no interest in Cameron's love life. As for Lavinia, he had followed her from a distance before and had long known she wasn't simple, so he'd always been wary.
To get to the visitation area, they took a shuttle bus provided by the prison.
The visitation area was inside the prison.
This was actually a rare type of prison setup.
As they passed through the middle road, there were inmates on both sides taking their outdoor time. They leaned against the fence, expressionlessly watching the shuttle bus drive past them.
This was a women's prison.
Ewan glanced around and roughly figured out the prison's setup.
The serving inmates looked fairly decent, dressed cleanly and neatly. And judging from their faces, their intelligence and social status before entering prison wouldn't have been low.
Financial crimes?
Ewan thought of Cordelia's background and guessed as much.
Cordelia had received word long ago that someone would be visiting.
She was only forty-seven now, but her temples were already gray. Her skin condition was okay, but her eyes were dull.
Two years of prison life had worn away most of her pride. It was under these circumstances that she remembered her poor nephew William.
William had already inherited the Brown family.
Without her, how could William have been born? How could he have been qualified to inherit the Brown family?
Cordelia felt he should be thanking her.
