Chapter 12
Evelyn’s POV
The knock continued, in a harsh way that instantly drew me out of my slumber. I had hurried back into bed after eating Lunch at the cafeteria, and this person was already disturbing my sleep.
I dragged myself out of bed, half awake to the door, and when I opened it, I saw the image of a frightened Lily there.
I stared at her, not knowing what to say. I hadn’t seen her since that party, and here she was standing at my door, looking so apologetic and sad.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her, my tone as even as it could possibly be.
“I am so sorry Eve, I really am. I didn’t mean to leave you out there on your own. I was scared.” She admitted, her face folding to reflect her sadness and regret.
I didn’t say anything, I struggled not to recall what had happened that night. The trauma remained, and I wondered what would have happened if Alpha Damon hadn’t stepped in to save me that night.
I saw it in their eyes that they were more than determined to throw me down that building that night, they enjoyed torturing me, and Edina would have gone scout free even if she had managed to kill me that night, and I will have only a few who will feel sorry for me.
I swallowed the bitter scary thoughts and shook my head violently to shake away the thoughts from my mind. A tear rolled down Lily’s face then, and her eyes turned pitiful.
“I know it is not an excuse, I was scared alright. I knew if I stepped in myself, I wouldn’t be able to help you, and they could hurt me too. That was very selfish of me, I am so sorry. I tried to look for Lucien immediately, but I couldn’t find him on time.” She said wiping away her tears with the back of her palms, but her tears kept falling.
I wanted to speak, to reassure her that I didn’t blame her, but my throat suddenly felt too dry to even make a sound.
She looked at me pleadingly, and continued. “Its alright if you can’t forgive me, I just wanted to apologize to you, and let you know that I feel very bad for leaving you out there on your own.” She finished and then forced a smile to her face and turned to leave.
I quickly grabbed her hand, stopping her from making another move. She turned to look at me, her eyes breaming with hope and sadness.
“I am not angry at you, It wasn’t your fault.” I told her even though my throat felt very dry.
Her eyes widened and brightened instantly, and another roll of tears rushed down her face. “Really, you aren’t mad at me?” Hope simmered in her tone and face, and when I nodded, she quickly hugged me tightly.
“Thank you, Eve, and I am so sorry you had to go through all that.” She said, her hands tightened around me as she buried her face on my shoulder.
I hugged her back, tightly as I felt my own eyes begin to tear up. “I am sorry too Lily. I really am.” I replied.
We hugged for a longer time, and then she drew me back into my room, her face filled with sudden excitement as we both sat down on my bed.
“Tell me all about the Alpha, I heard he saved you and almost choaked Edina to death for what she did to you.” She said, her face filled with a satisfied grin.
I smiled softly at that, recalling how he had defended me in front of the entire Pack, only to announce that I was his mate.
I suck in a breath and smiled forcefully. “There’s nothing to tell really.” I told her with a shrug.
She frowned lightly, and gave me a strange look. “No way, you aren’t allowed to keep it from me Eve. Everyone is talking about it, you and Alpha Damon, they seem to think you are already a pair or something, why don’t you want to tell me?” She pulsed her lips, her eyes going wide as she tried to act cutely.
I bit back my laughter at that, but then I understood what she was saying. My face instantly turned serious. “What do you mean everyone? What are people saying?” I asked her, not able to hold back my surprise and shock.
She shrugged, her face suddenly twisting in sadness. “What, you didn’t know about it? I thought you knew about it.” She replied, looking everywhere but my face.
“Heard about what exactly?” I asked her, hating what I saw in her eyes.
She shrugged. “Its nothing really, just some talks here and there, its best not to concern yourself with any of it.” She replied seriously.
Just then, a knock came on my door, breaking the ice. I looked at Lily seriously, hating that she took that time to breath. I clenched my fist to keep back the urge to keep asking her until she told me everything I wanted to hear.
“We are not done talking about this.” I reminded her and headed for the door to see who was there, and as soon as I opened the door, Lucien’s face came into view. He was not smiling or anything, infact he seemed to be holding back sadness and rage.
“Lucien, HI.” I greeted, suddenly feeling weird that my house was suddenly having a lot of visitors.
Lucien’s hands were stuck in his trouser pockets, and he kept a forced neutrality on his face. “Can I come in?” He asked simply, but his eyes bore with such consistency that made me almost hesitate.
“Yes, come in please. Lily’s also here you know.” I told him as I made way for him to enter.
“I can see that now.” He said with a nod and made his way deeper into my room, to meet with Lily who still had a nervous expression on her face as we both entered.
“Lily, you are here.” Lucien greeted with a smile playing on her lips, and Lily gave her a nervous smile.
“Lucien, can you please tell me the truth, what are people saying about me?” I asked him as soon as he settled in, and Lily’s eyes widened.
“Eve, i………” she trailed off, not knowing how to continue.
Lucien sighed and said calmly. “I think you shouldn’t bother asking, you won’t like it.” He replied, and what I heard in his voice made my throat tighten.
