Chapter 139
Mia's POV
I was heartbroken to say the least. This was not supposed to end this way. We were not supposed to end up this way.
But, I was thankful. I had my child with me. He was a constant reminder of his father, especially since he looked like him a lot. I did not mind it, I just wished sometimes, that he did not look so much like him.
He was grown now.
Learning the ropes of being a toddler and I could not be more proud.
After the series of conversations I had with Sophia, I realized that Adrian could not have both worlds. I did not want my partner actively involved in violence and even when he left the life, it was still dragging him back. Odds were that he was going to go back to the life he has always known. From the frequent calls he got and sometimes, secretly took, it was obvious that they needed him back and maybe they were going to do everything humanly possible to do that.
Sophia had told me she was not going to stay here with me for a much longer time. It had something to do with the internship that she got.
I did not expect her to stay for a long time, but I also did not think she was going to leave so soon.
I knew it was going to be a while before I saw her again, seeing as she was a very busy person and I was now a mom.
“I absolutely do not want you gone.” I had said, sobbing as well.
“I'm not gone, I'd just be working. That is all.”
“You no longer would be accessible.” I insisted.
“Well, I cannot deny that. But thing is, if you need me, you do know exactly how to get to me.” She waited for a response and when she was not getting it, she shook my arm, saying, “right?” In a louder tone.
I blinked the tears away, nodding vigorously.
“Good girl. But, just in case, you find it difficult contacting me, here is an address. Another house. There's two years worth of supplies there. You probably would not be getting fresh foods all the time, but it only gets better, baby.”
I looked at her, amazed by how I knew such a friend.
Hold on! Did she just say a house filled with two years worth of supplies? How on earth did she get that much money?
Was this the right time to ask?
“You do know, I can clearly hear your thoughts just by looking at you, right? Your face is asking a whole lot of questions right now.” She mentioned.
“Really?” I asked.
“You can ask them.” She encouraged.
“How did you get the money for different safe houses?”
“They are not actually mine, if I am being totally honest. Jake had them set up and put some of them in my name. He was just being worried and getting prepared as a result.” She explained.
“What?!” It was totally unclear to me and then I remembered, Jake had mentioned something about our dad living this way before.
Maybe, these houses were what he put his money into.
I was glad about them though. They were a back up plan and that was a good thing.
She went ahead to pack a bag, promising not to take too much time in the process.
I had to go re-pump and then I saw him. A man dresses in a black t-shirt tucked into black business pants, with dark shades on. He looked straight out of a book.
I knew who he was even though I did not know him.
Why was he here? And he did not seem bothered that I saw him. Only one thing could answer my question.
This was a threat. It was possible the man from the mall sent him.
I heard his interaction with Adrian that day and I knew that he was no ordinary person. I could still remember every bit of what I had heard. He laughed, but you could tell he was serious too.
I closed my eyes and seconds later, opened them. He was gone. Like he was never there. But I knew exactly what I saw and I was not going to take chances.
Adrian and I could never be together, no matter how much we tried to make it happen. The people from his world were always going to be against us and it was going to be a lost cause, over and over again.
“Mia.” I heard him call.
I turned around, making sure to suppress the tears that were threatening to leave my eyes at that moment. He had some splashes of blood on his top and his lips were busted. I could not find the chance to ask him what happened.
“I need to talk to you. Is Sophia in?” He asked. Just then, she walked in. “Uhmmm…you too seem busy, I guess I will just be back later.” She said, before exiting the room.
“Is there a problem?”
“We need to leave here.” He said, frantically.
“What do you mean?”
“We just need to.”
He was not saying anything else, but I knew what was up and I was not ready to go around doing this same thing over and over again.
“Okay.” I simply said.
“I will be right back.” He stated, going out of the house once more.
I went to the room, packing all of my stuff in a box. I took a duffel bag to pack some of JR's things into.
These were going to be enough for us for the meantime.
Sophia walked in on me putting JR’s things in a bag.
“Oh. I'm guessing you will need space for that. I would just go on ahead and take JR with me to the sitting room.” I nodded. She understood when I was upset and I appreciated that.
I tore out a sheet of paper and proceeded to write what I thought about this whole situation.
Adrian was not going to see me when he got back and I was going to make sure he was not going to be able to contact me. Not in a long time.
