Chapter 138
Adrian's POV
It was a tough decision to make, but I had to do it, regardless.
I was going to delay for a while longer. I was going to see if I would be left alone.
It turned out that they had no plans of letting me be.
The calls kept coming in and when I would go outside, I could tell that I was being followed and I had a vague knowledge of who it was that was keeping tabs on me.
It was very possible that Andrew would send his men after me.
I thought about why they wanted me back. If anything, they should be elated that I was off the grid. No more threats from me. But, I guess he and others missed the thrill that came with competing with me for the market.
Mia and I were no longer what we used to be. She wanted out. I could sense it already. I could almost hear her thoughts whenever she looked at me.
Her eyes always said the words she was hesitant to say.
She thought it wise to invite Sophia to be with us for a while. While I understood that decision of hers, I thought it was not the best thing to do here, since Sophia's presence would make it more impossible for us to actually talk.
I still got breakfast and dinners, but we barely talked.
JR was growing up and I almost wished his growth rate could go a little slower.
Christian calls came in a lot more frequently.
He was experiencing more difficulties and was not so sure he could handle them all and alone.
I made sure things were in place for him, but he made sure to tell me each time he called how bad things were on his end.
I understood him, but I had something holding me back, or rather persons. I was enjoying the quiet kind of living and was not sure I wanted to leave it yet, despite what I had told Andrew. That was just to get him off my back, but it looked like he had caught on so fast and now, he had resorted to sending men to watch me.
I knew it was not going to be long before they tried to get in contact. They could even go as far as trying to attack me, or worse Mia and JR.
That was never going to happen. Not under my watch.
Maybe, the best thing to do at this point was to get a new place. Where no one from my past knew. That way, we could be safe for a while. Moving places or houses was going to be a temporary measure. I knew that because here in my world, it was not so difficult to find a person so influential, especially when other underdogs were trying so hard to get in the good graces of their bosses.
But that way, I would know for sure that their safety is assured for at least three months if I go completely under the radar.
Or perhaps, it would be safer if I went off the radar. If I disappear, they would come after me instead.
No. There was a possibility they would get my family to try to bring me out.
I needed to make sure they were safe. That was the most important duty I had. I could keep them safe and protected and then disappear.
If they caught on to them eventually, chances of them hurting them were going to be very slim, because they would not want to piss me off. I could not say the same for when I get captured before them.
How foolish was I to think about leaving without putting measures up in place?
If I was being followed, they already probably knew where I lived and could attack anytime.
The plans I had to move Mia and JR might, in the end, be futile after all.
I still needed to try.
I was on my way back home. I needed to talk to Mia and this time around, we were not going to raise our voices at each other. I sincerely hoped it did not get to that point.
But there was still Sophia whom I knew very well did not trust me. She always gave me the ‘you are being watched’ look.
I was going to send her on an errand when I needed to talk to Mia.
Christian call came in again.
“Boss, a letter came in for you, not so long ago.”
“I no longer live there. Everybody knows.”
“Yeah, they do, and that is why it is weird. I will forward the details to you.” He responded.
My phone pinged from the email notification and I opened it.
It was handwritten. Christian had taken a photo. It was pretty clear and written in upper case letters.
“YOU HAVE LITTLE TIME LEFT.” The text read. And that was it.
This was too much of a threat.
Whoever sent this specifically avoided sending it to my current place of residence and I could guess why. They probably did not want it to be found by anyone else other than myself.
I could feel the muscles around my jaw get tensed.
“Christian?” I called
“Tell me sir.”
“Did no one see who had dropped this off?” I asked.
“Not that I know, sir. This place is as busy as it has ever gotten. With you gone, it has been a lot worse, in a good way, though. We have more revenue now. I could send in the reports. If you want them now, that would not be a problem now.”
He blabbed on.
I knew that he was excited to tell me about his successes, but this was not the time or place for it.
“Thank you, Christian, but I will not be needing those now. Listen very carefully to what I have to say. I need you to get ready some able bodied men. Your best ones. I'll let you know exactly when I need them.”
“Sure thing, boss.” He replied.
The call got disconnected and I knew I had to lose the man who was trying so hard to be discreet behind my back.
“You can come out now, you bitch!” I gritted.
