Chapter 137

Sophia's POV

Mia had invited me. I was to come help around the house for a few weeks till she could find a balance one more time. I did not mind. It was an avenue for me to bond with her as well as with the child, JR.

My presence at the house did not, in any way reduce the tension there, though.

They both had at it for a while, not one person letting up.

It was kind of a good thing that their child was still so young. Too young to understand what was going on. This though, did not stop them from unknowingly neglecting him. Thankfully, I was there to save the day.

I watched daily as Mia's light dimmed slowly as a result of the thoughts that possibly ran through her head because of Adrian's movement.

Their fight was a big one and I could tell it had something to do with the Mafia.

If I was right, I knew a day like this would come and I had hoped she had come to terms with that sooner than now.

I felt bad for my friend, because she did not deserve any of this and she has been through so much already. All she wanted was a job, so she could more independent and make plans properly.

But here she was, stuck with a mafia Lord who did not mind going back and forth on his words.

I helped in any way I can. Using the baby's monitor to make sure JR was okay at all times. Thankfully, she did not totally forget her duties towards her child, but I always made sure if she ever felt or got overwhelmed, I was there to ease her of some chores.

Adrian went out a lot now and when he was in, they barely talked. If they ever did talk, it did not take much time for their voices to be raised.

I always made sure to avoid either of them during those fights that they had, but Mia was my friend. It was going to be a herculean task to totally avoid her, especially since she had a baby with her.

I was making an early dinner, because we had a late breakfast and I nwas quite hungry.

She came into the kitchen space, looking as tired as ever.

“JR is finally asleep. He's in his cot.” She had said.

“You need some sleep, yourself. You look so tired.” I told her.

She smiled. “I am just hungry, that is all. Thankfully, you are making a meal.” She said further, pointing at the pot of tomato stew I was stirring on the cooker. She tried to be more enthusiastic about it in an attempt to cover up, but I could see through her acting.

“It's almost ready. I'll just plate it up and then you can eat.” I thought to ask about Adrian, but that would be insensitive. I could take his out too, but probably when she was not here.

Could you help set the table?” She nodded and obliged.

I took out a microwaveable dish to plate up Adrian's share and I put it into the fridge. He probably was not going to eat it, but I made sure to leave some for him for when he changed his mind.

I took a bowl of the pasta to the table and went back to the kitchen for some stew.

We now sat at the table for our meal.

“Look, I know you are going through a hard time right now, and you are caught up between two parallel choices and subsequently life. You do not have to take it so hard on yourself, but you should also remember you have a son. One whose life you do not want to risk loosing. You have to make a decision in both of your interests.”

She looked at me, as if asking that I carry on.

“Now, I am not going to tell you what to do, but I will just say this, if the Mafia life is not for you, I suggest you leave it be, once and for all, and soon too. Adrian is a mafia boss, a lord there. Of course it would be hard to let go of that life. It is what he has known his whole life. And truth be told, he is not going to let go of it totally, anytime soon.”

There! I had dropped it. She was not giving any reaction as to how she took it. She just mixed er pasta with her stew continuously, before putting a spoonful in her mouth.

She chewed silently, and after a while, she turned to look at me.

“What should I do, Sophia? This thing is extremely tough.”

“You will figure it out. Let us just have our meals as hope JR do not wake up while we are at it.” I said, laughing trying to lighten up the mood. She matched up the energy laughing as well and began to choke from the spiciness of the stew.

I laughed at her some more, before passing her a glass of water.

We ended up having a nice meal together. One of the best I have had in a long time.

We caught up on each other's life, well, mostly mine, since I did not want her to have to remember what had happened to her.

While she went to work for Adrian's household, I took an internship at a fashion house and thankfully I took my time there seriously.

I was still under their tutelage since it was a long duration program and I was still enjoying every bit of it.

She listened to every word I said, enjoying the conversation too.

We finished up and cleared the table.

“But seriously, Sophia, I thought Adrian and I were past this. Thought we were never going to be back to this, but I guess some things are better off hoped for.” She said, trying to control her sobs. “And now, there is JR there too. What should I do?”
