Chapter 29 Chapter 29

Chapter 29 Chapter 29
" EDWINA!!"

There was a loud roar in the crowd, followed by Hades's wolf jumping forward to shield her fallen body. The crowd was in uproar after the unexpected arrow was shot from the woods. They began to run in different ways, panicking.

However, Hades had no eyes for them. His murderous eyes lay on the girl, wailing on the ground in pain. The arrow had been shot on her back, piercing through her skin. Fresh blood was dripping from the deep wound as she howled in pain continuously. The recovery that she just gained was gone again. It was replaced with the burning pain on her back.

To everyone's surprise, Hades returned to his human form after no more arrows came their way. His masculine figure appeared in front of her eyes and slowly, he raised her up in his arms, not caring how many eyes were watching them. With large strides, he rushed back into the Red Darkling.

Edwina's father, Alpha Artemis, tried to step past his daughter but the running crowd blocked his way. By that time, he came forward, and Edwina wasn't there anymore.

Who tried to harm his daughter?

Inside the Red Darkling, the maids all followed the king who was carrying Edwina upstairs. Angelina was right next to him, trying to convince him,
" My king..Why don't you put her down? I can carry her up too."

But Hades had turned a deaf ear to her suggestion. His ears only heard the low whimpers of pain, coming from Edwina's mouth. Her body was slowly turning numb in his arms. After kicking the door of his bedroom open, he shouted at his subordinates,
" Call the fucking healer now! What are you waiting for?"

Beta Cohen was handling the situation downstairs. So, it was the other guards who went on following the order. Hades looked at her wounded back, cursed under his breath, and went back to find the crowd who were here to cause trouble.

" How is she now?", Hades asked, anxiety lacing out from his voice. The Royal healer said respectively, keeping his head down in submission,
" Thankfully, the arrow wasn't poisonous. The lady is wounded only. It's not something major but I suggest recuperating for 3 days in bed at least."

Hades sighed in relief and assured him, taking a glance at the closed door,
" Don't worry, she will be observed by me personally."

The healer bowed and left soon afterwards. Right after he retreated, Beta Cohen appeared at the place. He informed his Alpha in a grim voice,
" My king, you should see something first."

Hades squinted his eyes and decided to follow him while asking,
" Are they still there?"

Cohen replied, coming through the stairs,
" No...They have all run away after the arrow was shot at the Mistress."

Hades corrected with a stern voice,
" The arrow was aimed at me, Cohen! She jumped in front to take it on my behalf. Such a fool!"

Cohen knew it from the beginning. He was just afraid that the king would react if he said that Edwina had saved his life. But he was glad that Hades wasn't blaming Edwina for this. As a highly observant Beta, how couldn't he notice that Edwina had no intentions to lure the king, unlike others?

They came to the downtown. Wailings of men could be heard in the air. His guards captured the closest suspicious persons who were near the woods at that time. They claimed themselves 'innocent'.

" My king, we haven't done anything."

" I don't even know how to shoot an arrow!"

Hades barely spared them a glance then took the arrow from the guard's hand to inspect it with his own eyes. His frown deepened, failing to detect the owner of this arrow. Naturally, each pack had special symbolized arrows to use in their flights. As the king of all the Alphas, Hades had clear knowledge about all the existing arrows, owned by those packs. But this arrow...He had never seen it before nor did he know that such an arrow existed in his kingdom.

Whoever it was had actually come well prepared...

Hades released those suspects as he firmly believed that those lousy figures could never dare to do such a vital thing as attack,
" Release them! The attacks aren't them. Someone is hiding in the shadows, Cohen. Investigate the bearer of these arrows. I want to know who is holding illegal weapons behind my back."

According to their pack tradition, every pack had to obtain permission from the ministry before owning or buying any weapons. Hades was pretty much sure that this arrow wasn't licensed through his ministers or him. So, the investigation must go on to find the real culprit.

Deeper that same night, the main entrance of Red Darkling was closed earlier than regular time due to the recent commotion. The security had become tight again and was now guarding over more expanded areas. Beta Cohen left his sleep and was personally observing the lands.

Princess Laura just returned from her night hunt in a forbidden area. She was dumbfounded when one of the guards from the entrance stopped her,
" Your Highness! You can't go in. Red Darkling has issued a new rule at night. No one can enter the palace after 1 AM."

Laura's face blackened in anger. She shouted glaring at the guards,
" Can't you see who I am? Do you think that I have brought a weapon to kill my brother?"

" Rules are the same for everyone!", Cohen appeared on the spot. His eyes were cold and distant. Actually, Luara had always lived a carefree life always hunting, hanging out without permission. Since Hades doted on her, no one dared to stop her or lecture her. She was unruly, carefree as always.

Laura scoffed at Cohen, raising her brows challenging manner,
" So, you are with them too? Do you think that this bunch of idiots can stop me?"

Actually, Cohen just wanted to set some rules for her. Since Hades never took any action, he wanted to take charge personally for some unknown reason. Cohen replied confidently, scoffing back,
" But I can! I am the beta!"

Laura was infuriated that her voice started trembling. She retorted swiftly after his words,
" Fine! Defeat me then!"

The guards exchanged glances stupefied. Well, why did Beta Cohen always try to pull her legs_______

" Hiss...A little softer..", Edwina winced in pain as the massage on her back turned a little rougher. She just regained her consciousness and was lying on her stomach, fully naked. Only a blanket rested on her hips, barely hiding her private parts.

" Maybe..two more arrows can make you feel the pain more vividly!", a deep, groaning voice responded, shocking her sanity. She wanted to turn around but his strong grip warned her to stay in place. She had no idea when the king had switched places with the palace maid. The pain had blocked her thoughts too much.

Edwina muttered, her face turning red,
" You...why are you here? You should have let the maids do this."

Actually, she was getting shy unreasonably. They had been intimate many times but it never changed. Hades's face grimaced angrily. Still having his hand pressed on her wound, he bent over to whisper into her hot ears,
" You'd rather be touched by the maids rather than me?"

Before Edwina could tell anything, a painful wail escaped her mouth as the jealous king poked her wound hard, turning her miserable. Edwina gasped, pressing her lips together tightly.

Jerk!

Her wolf resonated inside but something didn't feel right. Why did he sound like he cared?

Hades continued, dabbing on her wound while keeping his face against her naked back,
" Too much loyalty from an enemy is dangerous, Mistress Edwina. Why do you always keep showing it to me?"

She had no idea....

She had fucking no idea why she saved his life over her own...

Still, she defended her action weakly, whispering back,
" That's not... loyalty...Just an act of situation..Ah.."

He yanked her hair back, tilting her head behind to look into his dark eyes forcefully. Their lips were just inches apart, trying to break the rules again. But Hades asked something unexpected, hatred leaping from his v
oice,
" Is that so? Tell me who you will support if you learn that this attack was prepared by your mate?"
