Chapter 112 Secret Alliance
POV: Luna
The next morning, I return to the clearing where I met Kael.
My mark is glowing. Seeking answers. Like he said it would.
And sure enough, he's there. Waiting in wolf form.
"You came," he says, shifting to partial form. "Does that mean you trust me?"
"It means I have questions. And you have information. Trust is earned."
"Fair enough." He sits. Calm. Patient. "Ask."
"The sigil near the forest edge. Pointing toward Silverwood. Was that you?"
"Yes. I placed it last night. After sensing danger building within your Academy."
"What kind of danger?"
"The insider. The one working with the shadow caller. They're preparing something. A major move. Within days. Maybe hours."
"Do you know who it is?"
"I have suspicions. But nothing concrete. The shadow caller is good at hiding his pawns. Making them appear trustworthy. Even to themselves sometimes."
"What does that mean?"
"It means some of his servants don't even know they're serving him. They think they're acting independently. Making their own choices. But they're being manipulated. Guided toward outcomes the shadow caller wants."
That's terrifying. The idea that someone could be working for the enemy without knowing it.
"How do we identify them?"
"Look for patterns. Who benefits from your destruction? Who's been in position to sabotage you repeatedly? Who has access to information they shouldn't?"
I think about it. Cassandra's Circle is obvious. But they're too visible. Too openly hostile.
The shadow caller would use someone more subtle. More trusted.
"I need more than suspicions. I need proof."
"Then gather it. Watch. Listen. Pay attention to small inconsistencies. Lies that don't quite line up. Knowledge that shouldn't exist."
Kael shifts to full wolf form. Then back to partial. A nervous habit maybe.
"Luna, I can't force you to trust me. Can't prove my intentions through words alone. But I can share what I know. Help you connect pieces you're missing."
"Then help me understand. Why is the shadow caller so focused on Eclipse wolves specifically? We're rare but not unique. Powerful but not unstoppable."
"Because Eclipse wolves are keys. Conduits. Bridges between realms. You can channel divine power directly from the goddess. That connection is what makes you valuable. And dangerous."
"So he wants to corrupt that connection. Turn it against the goddess."
"Exactly. Imagine Eclipse wolves serving darkness instead of light. Channeling corruption instead of purity. We'd be unstoppable. Unkillable. Capable of reshaping reality itself."
"That's what he became. What he wants me to become."
"Yes. But you're stronger than he was. More aware. You have something he never had. Real connections. Real pack. Real love."
Kael's voice carries weight. Experience. Pain from understanding what corruption costs.
"Tell me about the one you lost. The Eclipse who chose darkness."
He's quiet for a long moment. Then: "Her name was Vera. She was brilliant. Powerful. Everything an Eclipse should be. But she was also isolated. Alone. The Council feared her. Other wolves resented her. She had no one."
"Except the shadow caller."
"Except him. He offered her everything she'd been denied. Acceptance. Power without restriction. A place to belong. And she took it. Chose darkness because it offered what light wouldn't."
"What happened to her?"
"She became his weapon. Destroyed three packs before the Council stopped her. They didn't use Binding Protocol. They executed her. No trial. No mercy. Just elimination."
My blood runs cold. "That's what they'll do to me if I fail. If I can't prove I'm in control."
"Probably. Which is why you can't fail. Can't give them reason to fear you. Can't let isolation drive you toward the shadow caller's promises."
"I'm not isolated. I have pack. Friends. People who care about me."
"Good. Hold onto them. They're your protection. Your anchor. Your reason to resist corruption even when it offers everything you need."
We sit in silence. Both understanding the stakes. Both carrying grief for those who chose wrong.
"I want to accept your alliance," I finally say. "But I need my pack's approval. We make decisions together."
"Smart. Cautious. Exactly what Eclipse wolves should be." Kael stands. "Bring them here. Tonight. Let me meet them. Prove my intentions through action rather than words."
"And if they reject the alliance?"
"Then I'll respect that. Disappear. Continue fighting the shadow caller alone like I have been." He pauses. "But I hope they won't. Because alone, we're vulnerable. Together, we might actually survive what's coming."
I agree to bring my pack tonight. After classes. When we can slip away unnoticed.
Kael vanishes into the forest. And I head back to campus.
But as I'm walking, I feel it. Someone watching.
I turn slowly. Scanning the treeline.
And I see him. The dark figure from the otherworld.
But he's here. In the living world. Actually manifested. Not just watching from between realms.
The shadow caller. In physical form. Or as close as a corrupted spirit can get.
He doesn't approach. Just stands there. Watching. Smiling that cold smile.
A message. I can reach you. I'm closer than you think. Ready when you are.
Then he fades. Disappearing like smoke.
But the threat lingers. The certainty that he's no longer confined to the otherworld.
He's here. Active. Present. Preparing for his final move.
And I'm running out of time to get ready.
I rush back to campus. Find my pack immediately.
"He manifested," I tell them. "The shadow caller. In physical form. Watching from the treeline."
"That's not possible," Sienna says. "Spirits can't fully manifest without anchors. Without living hosts."
"Unless he has an anchor. Someone living who's channeling him. Giving him form."
"The insider," Aria realizes. "They're not just working for him. They're hosting him. Allowing him to manifest."
"Which means they have to be powerful. Strong enough to contain a corrupted Eclipse spirit without being consumed."
We look at each other. All thinking the same thing.
Who at Silverwood is that powerful? That skilled? That potentially compromised?
"We meet Kael tonight," I decide. "Hear him out. Form the alliance. Because we're going to need every advantage we can get. The shadow caller is no longer theoretical. He's active. Here. And coming for me."
"For us," Nova corrects. "Pack bond means we're all targets now."
"Then we face him together. Like we face everything."
That night, we sneak to the clearing. All five of us. Pack united.
Kael is waiting. Still in wolf form. Watching our approach.
"You brought them," he says, shifting to partial form. "Good."
I make introductions. Explain Kael's offer. His information. His warnings.
My pack listens carefully. Skeptically. But openly.
"Prove you're trustworthy," Aria challenges. "Give us something concrete. Something we can verify."
"The rogue attack three days from now. They're planning another assault. Eastern perimeter. Midnight. Three enhanced creatures plus dozens of lesser rogues. The target is Luna specifically. They want to force her to use full Eclipse power. Create evidence for the Council."
"How do you know this?"
"I've been tracking rogue movements. Intercepted their communications. They're being directed by someone using the runic network you discovered."
Lyric's eyes widen. "You know about the network?"
"I know a lot. Because I've been watching. Learning. Preparing. Just like you have."
"Then help us disrupt it," Sienna says. "The network. If we can break the central node, we can stop the attacks."
"I can help you find it. But destroying it requires Eclipse power. Luna's power. It was created by a corrupted Eclipse. Only an uncorrupted one can unmake it."
This is huge. If true. If we can trust him.
"We need to discuss," I tell Kael. "Privately. Pack only."
"Understood. I'll wait."
He shifts to full wolf form. Moves to the far edge of the clearing. Giving us space.
My pack huddles together.
"What do we think?" I ask.
Opinions are mixed. But gradually, we reach consensus.
Kael seems genuine. His information checks out. And we need allies.
"Tentative alliance," Aria says. "We work with him. But we verify everything. Trust but verify."
Everyone agrees.
I turn back to Kael. "We accept. Alliance formed. But we need proof of good faith. Help us prepare for the attack in three days. Prove you're on our side."
Kael shifts back to partial form. "Deal. I'll provide intelligence. Tactical support. Everything I know. And when the time comes, I'll fight beside you."
We shake on it. Pack and lone wolf. United against common enemy.
But as we're leaving the clearing, I notice something.
The dark figure. Watching from deeper in the forest. Observing our alliance.
And he's smiling. Like this is exactly what he wanted. Expected. Planned for.
Like Kael's alliance is somehow part of his larger scheme.
And I can't shake the feeling that we just walked into another trap.
Carefully designed. Perfectly baited. Impossible to resist.
And when it springs, we'll all pay the price.
