Chapter 113 Romance Sparks
POV: Luna
Cole requests another private training session the day after we form the alliance with Kael.
"We have two days before the predicted attack," he says. "I want to push you. See what you're really capable of."
"Kael told you about that?"
"No. I have my own intelligence sources. And they confirm a major assault is coming. Which means you need to be at peak performance."
We meet at the advanced training grounds after dinner. Just the two of us. Alone.
The sun is setting. Casting long shadows across the practice area.
"No holding back tonight," Cole says. "I want to see your absolute maximum. Everything you've got."
"Are you sure? I've been... volatile lately. My mark overloading. Power surging unexpectedly."
"I'm aware. Which is why we're training. To help you control those surges. Channel them productively."
We start with basic drills. Attack. Defend. Counter. Standard combat patterns.
But Cole keeps pushing. Faster. Harder. More complex.
"You're thinking too much," he says. "Stop analyzing. Just react."
"I'm trying."
"Try harder. Or are you afraid of what you might do if you let go completely?"
That stings. Because he's right. I am afraid.
Afraid of losing control. Afraid of hurting him. Afraid of proving the Council right.
"I'm not afraid," I lie.
"Prove it. Full power. Right now. Attack me like you mean it."
I hesitate. Then comply.
I channel everything. Wolf strength. Eclipse magic. The ring's amplification. Miguel's essence.
And I attack.
Fast. Precise. Overwhelming.
Cole defends brilliantly. Matching my intensity. Pushing back.
We trade blows. Neither gaining clear advantage. Both operating at levels most students never reach.
"Better!" Cole calls out. "But you're still holding back. Give me everything!"
"I'll hurt you!"
"Then hurt me! Show me what you're capable of when nothing is restricted!"
I push harder. Deeper. Accessing power I usually suppress.
My mark glows bright. Silver light filling the training ground.
And for just a moment, I'm not Luna. I'm Eclipse. Pure. Unleashed. Unstoppable.
Cole sees it. Recognizes what I've become.
And instead of fear, his expression shows... awe. Pride. Something deeper.
"There you are," he says quietly. "The real you. Not the careful student. Not the controlled wolf. Just raw, honest power."
The words hit differently than they should. Intimate. Personal.
I pull back. Regulating my power. Returning to controlled state.
"That was... intense."
"That was incredible. You're incredible." He moves closer. "Luna, do you understand what you just did? You accessed full Eclipse power without losing control. Maintained consciousness while channeling divine energy. That's advanced. That's mastery."
"It didn't feel like mastery. It felt like barely contained chaos."
"That's what mastery feels like at this level. The power is so vast you can never fully control it. You just learn to channel it. Direct it. Use it without being consumed."
We're standing close now. Both breathing hard from exertion. Both aware of the charge between us.
"We should cool down," I say. "Before someone sees us training this late and asks questions."
"Probably wise."
But neither of us moves.
"Luna, can I be honest about something?"
"Please."
"Watching you fight like that. Seeing you access your true power. It's..." He struggles for words. "It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Not just powerful. Beautiful. Like watching art happen in real time."
My heart races. "Cole—"
"I know. We can't. Not while you're my student. Not while the circumstances are what they are. But I needed you to know. That you're remarkable. That what you are is something to celebrate. Not fear."
"The Council fears it. Cassandra's Circle fears it. Even I fear it sometimes."
"Then they're all fools." His voice is intense. Passionate. "You're not dangerous. You're powerful. There's a difference. And anyone who can't see that isn't worth your concern."
I want to close the distance. Want to cross that line we keep dancing around.
But I don't. Because he's right. We can't. Not now.
"We should practice defensive techniques," I say, trying to redirect. "If the attack is in two days, I need to be ready to protect others. Not just fight."
"Good thinking. Shift focus."
We move to defensive drills. Creating shields. Protecting imaginary allies. Deflecting magical attacks.
But the awareness between us doesn't fade. If anything, it intensifies.
Every time he corrects my form. Every time our hands touch during demonstrations. Every time our eyes meet.
The attraction is undeniable. Growing. Impossible to ignore.
"Try channeling defensive energy through the ring," Cole suggests. "Use its amplification to strengthen shields."
I follow his instruction. Creating a protective barrier. Feeding it with Eclipse power and the ring's enhancement.
The shield forms. Stronger than anything I've made before. Glowing silver. Nearly solid.
"Perfect. Now maintain it while I attack."
Cole casts offensive spells. Testing the shield's integrity. Looking for weaknesses.
The shield holds. Adapts. Strengthens where needed.
"Excellent. You're integrating defensive magic with your Eclipse nature. That's exactly what you need for protecting your pack during the attack."
We continue for another hour. Pushing limits. Exploring possibilities.
By the time we finish, I'm exhausted but exhilarated.
"Same time tomorrow?" Cole asks. "One more session before the attack?"
"Yeah. I need all the practice I can get."
"Luna, before you go. There's something I need to say."
"What?"
"Whatever happens during this attack. Whatever forces we face. I want you to know that I'll fight beside you. Protect you if I can. But more importantly, I believe in you. Completely. You can handle whatever comes."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because I've seen what you're capable of. And it's extraordinary."
He reaches out. Takes my hand. Just for a moment.
And my mark flares. Bright. Hot. Reacting to his touch.
Magical resonance. Stronger than before. Like our energies recognizing each other. Connecting.
We both feel it. The power flowing between us. Amplifying. Intensifying.
"What is that?" I breathe.
"I don't know. But it feels... right. Like our magic is compatible somehow."
The resonance builds. More and more energy cycling between us.
My ring glows. His mark pulses. Both feeding into this connection.
And then something happens.
A surge. Sudden. Overwhelming. Too much power concentrated in too small a space.
Energy explodes outward. Sparks flying. Magic crackling through the air.
We're thrown apart. Both landing hard several feet away.
I scramble up immediately. "Cole! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. You?"
"Yeah. What was that?"
"I think... I think our magical signatures are too compatible. When we touch, they amplify each other. Create feedback loops. That surge was the result."
"Is that dangerous?"
"Potentially. If we're not careful. But also..." He stands. Brushing himself off. "Also potentially very useful. If we could learn to control it. Channel it intentionally. We might be able to combine our power. Create effects neither of us could manage alone."
"You want to practice that? Risk more surges?"
"Not tonight. You're exhausted. And we need to understand the mechanics better before we try again." He looks at me seriously. "But Luna, that connection. That resonance. I've never experienced anything like it. Have you?"
"No. It's unique. Powerful. And honestly kind of terrifying."
"Yeah. All of that."
We stand there. Both processing what just happened.
The magical connection is one thing. Interesting. Worth exploring.
But the emotional connection underneath it. The reason our energies recognized each other in the first place.
That's what's really terrifying.
Because it means this isn't just attraction. It's compatibility. Real. Magical. Potentially transformative.
And I have no idea what to do with that.
"Get some rest," Cole finally says. "Tomorrow we'll push even harder. See what else you're capable of."
"Okay."
I turn to leave. But at the door, I pause.
"Cole? Thank you. For believing in me. For seeing me as more than just Eclipse. More than just a problem."
"You're not a problem, Luna. You're a solution. To so many things."
I walk back to my dorm. My mind racing. My mark still tingling from the connection.
Cole and I are playing with fire. Literally and figuratively.
The magical resonance. The emotional attraction. The impossible timing.
All of it building toward something. Some moment of decision.
But for now, I just need to focus on surviving the next two days.
On being ready for the attack. On protecting my pack. On proving I can handle this.
The romance can wait. Has to wait.
Even if every part of me wants it not to.
