Chapter 111 Unexpected Visitor
POV: Luna
Two days after the full moon battle, campus is still recovering.
Wards are being reinforced. Security doubled. Faculty on high alert.
And I'm assigned to patrol duty. Along with other advanced students. Watching for any sign of rogue activity.
Ryder leads our patrol group. Me, Nova, Marcus, and two other third years.
"Stay alert," Ryder warns. "The rogues have been testing our defenses. Looking for weaknesses. They'll try again."
We spread out along the eastern perimeter. The area where most attacks have originated.
The forest is quiet. Too quiet.
My wolf senses are on edge. Something feels wrong.
"Do you feel that?" I ask Nova quietly.
"Yeah. Like we're being watched."
"But I can't pinpoint where from. The sensation is everywhere."
We continue patrol. Moving carefully. Checking ward integrity. Looking for any sign of disturbance.
That's when I sense it. A presence. In the deep forest. Beyond normal patrol range.
Not rogue. This feels different. More controlled. More intelligent.
"I'm going to investigate," I tell Nova.
"Alone? That's against protocol."
"I'll stay within shouting distance. But whatever's out there, it's not attacking. Just... watching."
"Then let me come with you."
"No. If it's dangerous, I need you safe to get help. If it's not, I need to approach alone. Non-threatening."
Nova doesn't like it. But she nods. "Five minutes. If you're not back, I'm getting Ryder."
I move into the forest. Following my instincts. Tracking that unusual presence.
It's leading me deeper. Away from campus. Toward the wild areas where even rogues rarely go.
I partially shift. Claws out. Senses enhanced. Ready for anything.
Finally, I reach a clearing. And I see it.
A wolf. Massive. Black fur with silver markings. Eyes that glow amber instead of red.
Not a rogue. This is something else entirely.
The wolf sits calmly. Watching me. Waiting.
"Who are you?" I ask.
The wolf tilts its head. Studying me with clear intelligence.
Then it does something unexpected. It shifts. Partially. Just enough to speak.
"Luna Eclipse." The voice is male. Deep. Cultured. "I've been waiting to meet you."
"You're not a student. Not faculty. What are you?"
"I'm a messenger. A scout. An observer." He shifts back to full wolf form. Then back to partial. Like demonstrating his control. "I'm like you. Sentient. Aware. Choosing this form rather than being trapped in it."
"That doesn't answer my question. Who sent you? What do you want?"
"I sent myself. And I want to warn you. About what's coming. About forces you don't fully understand yet."
"The shadow caller. The convergence. I already know."
"You know pieces. Fragments. But not the whole picture." The wolf moves closer. Not threatening. Just... present. "The shadow caller is real. Dangerous. Everything you've been told. But he's not working alone. He has allies. Living allies. Within Silverwood's walls."
"I suspected as much. Do you know who?"
"I have theories. But no proof. That's why I'm here. To gather information. To understand who's betraying your Academy from within."
"Why should I trust you? I don't even know your name."
"My name is Kael. And you shouldn't trust me. Not yet. But you should listen to me. Because I have information you need."
I study him carefully. Trying to read his intentions.
His energy signature is powerful. Old. But not corrupted. Not like the rogues or the shadow caller's presence.
"What information?"
"The rogue attacks aren't random. They're tests. Someone is using them to map your defenses. Learn your response patterns. Identify your strongest fighters."
"We already knew that."
"But did you know they're specifically targeting Eclipse wolves? Not just you. Any wolf with strong Eclipse bloodline traits. They've attacked three other academies in the past month. All looking for students with lunar affinity."
That's new. And concerning.
"Why? What do they want with Eclipse wolves?"
"The shadow caller is trying to build an army. Not of rogues. Of corrupted Eclipse wolves. Powerful enough to challenge the goddess herself. Reshape wolf society completely."
My blood runs cold. "That's... ambitious. Insane. Impossible."
"Is it? With enough Eclipse wolves corrupted to his cause. With enough power concentrated in one place. He could do it. Could break the goddess's hold. Free all wolves from her restrictions."
"Or destroy everything in the process."
"That too."
Kael shifts back to full wolf form. Paces the clearing.
"Luna, you're the primary target. But you're not the only one. There are others like you. Marked. Powerful. Being hunted by forces you can't see."
"How do you know all this?"
"Because I've been tracking the shadow caller's movements for years. Trying to understand his plan. Stop him before he succeeds." Kael's eyes meet mine. "I failed once before. Lost someone I loved to his corruption. I won't fail again."
There's pain in his voice. Real pain. Old grief.
"Who did you lose?"
"Someone who believed the shadow caller's promises. Chose power over everything else. Became exactly what he wanted. A corrupted Eclipse serving his will."
"What happened to them?"
"They're gone. Consumed by darkness. Beyond saving." He shakes his head. "But you're not. You're still yourself. Still fighting. That's why I'm here. To make sure you stay that way."
"By warning me? By giving me information?"
"By offering alliance. Temporary. Tactical. We share a common enemy. We should share resources too."
I want to trust him. Want to believe he's genuine.
But I've been manipulated before. By people who seemed trustworthy.
"I need to think about this. Discuss with my pack. We don't make decisions alone."
"Smart. Cautious. Good." Kael moves toward the treeline. "I'll be nearby. Watching. When you're ready to talk again, I'll know."
"How?"
"Your mark. It glows when you're seeking answers. I can sense it from miles away."
He prepares to leave. But I have one more question.
"Kael, are you connected to the dark figure? The one from the otherworld?"
He pauses. "The shadow caller appears in many forms. I've seen him. Fought him. But I'm not connected to him. I'm connected to those fighting against him."
"Who?"
"You'll meet them. Eventually. If you survive long enough."
Then he's gone. Vanishing into the forest like smoke.
I stand in the clearing. Processing everything.
A mysterious wolf with inside information. Claims of Eclipse wolves being hunted across multiple academies. An offer of alliance against the shadow caller.
Too much. Too convenient. Too perfectly timed.
But also potentially valuable. If he's telling the truth.
I head back to Nova. Finding her exactly where I left her.
"Well?" she asks. "What did you find?"
"A wolf. Sentient. Intelligent. Claims to want to help us fight the shadow caller."
"Do you believe him?"
"I don't know. But we need to investigate. Verify his information. Figure out if he's trustworthy or just another threat."
We return to the patrol group. Report the encounter to Ryder.
He's immediately suspicious. "A mysterious wolf offering convenient information? That sounds like a trap."
"Maybe. Or maybe it's genuine. We won't know unless we investigate."
That evening, back at the dorm, I tell my pack everything.
They're divided.
Aria thinks it's too suspicious. Lyric wants to verify everything independently. Sienna thinks we should be cautious but open.
"What does your gut say?" Nova asks me.
"My gut says he's genuine. That he really does want to help. But my brain says that could be exactly what I'm supposed to think."
"Then we proceed carefully," Sienna decides. "Gather information. Test his claims. See if his intelligence proves accurate."
We agree on a plan. Research other academies. Look for reports of attacks on Eclipse-affiliated students. See if Kael's story checks out.
Later that night, I can't sleep. Again.
I keep thinking about Kael. About his offer. About the possibility of allies outside Silverwood.
I'm at my window, staring at the forest, when I notice something.
A glowing sigil. On a tree at the forest edge. Barely visible but definitely there.
I grab my coat and sneak out. Against better judgment. But I need to see what it is.
The sigil is carved into bark. Glowing faintly with magical energy.
And it's pointing. Like an arrow. Directing me toward Silverwood. Toward the Academy center.
Someone marked this. Recently. While I was sleeping.
A message? A warning? A threat?
I don't know.
But the sigil pulses as I approach. Reacting to my Eclipse mark.
Like it was meant specifically for me. Left by someone who knew I'd find it.
Kael? The shadow caller? Someone else entirely?
I trace the symbol carefully. Trying to understand its purpose.
And I feel it. Magic flowing through the mark. Showing me something.
A vision. Quick. Fragmented.
Danger approaching. From within. From someone close.
The vision ends.
But the message is clear.
Someone inside Silverwood is planning something. Soon. Something that targets me directly.
And this sigil is either a warning from an ally. Or a taunt from an enemy.
I need to figure out which. Fast.
Before whatever's coming arrives.
