Chapter 216

Chapter 216

So there's a very high chance they won't be able to get this money back at all.

At this thought, Emily felt an inexplicable sense of loss in her heart, along with a dull ache.

She picked up her phone and casually dialed Olivia's number.

Right now, besides Olivia, no one else could help her resolve this doubt in her mind.

As soon as Olivia answered the phone, she started chattering excitedly, "You said the other day you were taking time off and we could go out and have fun. I've already thought about it—why don't we go on a trip to the beach this time? You've always said you were too busy with work before. I know a really good spa!"

Emily's tone was full of guilt as she said quietly, "I'm afraid this vacation is going to fall through again."

"Ever since you started working, you've been busy all the time. You went to work, not sold yourself to the police station. How can you—"

Before Olivia could continue her tirade against Emily, Emily simply interrupted, "Olivia, there's something I want to ask you about. We're working on a case right now, and there are quite a few victims. All their assets were scammed away by a criminal organization, but they signed the donation agreements while fully conscious. In that case, can the money still be recovered?"

"I'll need to have a meeting with the lawyers at the firm to discuss this properly. But under normal circumstances, if it was a voluntary donation, there's a very high chance it can't be recovered. You should prepare yourself mentally for that."

After Olivia finished saying this, she realized Emily's tone sounded disappointed, so she quickly changed her approach and added, "Don't worry too much. But you said yourself they're fraudsters, so that's definitely a different situation. I'll let you know when I have news."

After hanging up, Emily sat leaning against the car window, her thoughts in turmoil, her heart unable to calm down for a long time.

Thinking of the painful expressions on those elderly people's faces, their hysterical wailing.

She could understand what these people were thinking—they just wanted to find a way out for themselves, wanted to prove they were just getting older, not useless.

Most people were probably attracted by the great benefits Light Feather Church offered.

But this world is full of ordinary people. Who doesn't want a good life, free from worries about food and clothing?

The only ones to blame are these scammers who are absolutely despicable!

"What are you thinking about? You haven't said a word the whole way."

William turned around, looking seriously into Emily's eyes.

"It's nothing. Olivia just told me to prepare myself mentally. She said there's a good chance the money can't be recovered. Even if the court can order the money returned to them, there's a high probability Light Feather Church has already transferred the money overseas."

Emily sighed and opened the car door to get out.

Before Emily could steady herself, she saw from a distance a guy in a white athletic shirt striding quickly straight toward her.

Oscar stopped in place and waved at her, "Emily!"

Emily frowned slightly, "Hello, Oscar."

"Emily, I discussed it with Jonathan before—I want to come work at the police station, to work with you. Jonathan approved it today. He's bringing me into the police station as a specially recruited talent. We're going to be colleagues from now on!"

As Oscar spoke, he handed Emily a large bouquet of flowers he was holding.

Emily was surprised. She glanced at the flowers Oscar was giving her. No big deal at first, but when she looked—it really gave her a shock.

Who gives someone a cactus as a flower gift?

All those spines looked scary, especially since she'd almost hugged the bouquet to her chest just now.

Oscar excitedly pointed at the cactus, explaining, "I've always felt that your personality and character are just like a cactus!"

Is this how you compliment a girl?

Emily's mouth twitched slightly, while William's face showed a complicated expression.

He turned around and glanced at Emily, "Officer Johnson, he says you're like a cactus. Are you sure he's not insulting you?"

Faced with William's deliberately provocative remark, Emily shot him a fierce look.

She used her eyes to signal William to shut up and stop talking!

William smiled teasingly, standing behind Emily, silently watching the two of them.

Emily handed the flowers back to Oscar, "Why are you giving me these? You're coming to work at the police station, so we'll be on the same team from now on. If you need help with anything, just ask. Don't be shy!"

"No, Emily, you don't understand. This cactus is really great. Look, cacti can grow in the harsh conditions of the desert. Their life force is tenacious and unyielding, and cacti also have really good medicinal value."

Oscar went on and on, but Emily's mind kept circling around the word "weirdo."

She didn't dare think about what would happen if people at the police station found out about this—how they would make fun of her!

Who would think to give a girl a cactus?

Emily laughed awkwardly, "I don't like cacti. I'm allergic to cacti. You should take it back and put it on your windowsill or desk—that would be nice. Plus, I heard before that cacti can protect against radiation."

"Emily, you really have great taste. You're truly my idol!"

Oscar looked at Emily with eyes full of admiration.

Emily and William quickly headed back upstairs to the office together.

Before they could enter, Delilah came out holding a stack of materials. She glanced at the two of them and smiled, "What did I tell you? I knew you two were fine. Joshua was so worried for nothing!"

"What are you talking about!"

Emily gave Delilah a gentle push.

Only then did Delilah realize she'd spoken her thoughts out loud. She covered her mouth with her hand, "I mean, you two are veteran partners—how could you really have a falling out over such a small thing? That wouldn't fit Captain Brown's character!"

"Go get ready. We'll probably be busy soon."

Emily picked up the water glass on the desk and drained it in one gulp.
