Chapter 215

Chapter 215

At first, Emily thought William might be joking with her. After staking out for so long, how could they suddenly have gathered criminal evidence on those people?

It wasn't until they arrived together at the church entrance that she saw a huge crowd gathered right at the church doors.

Many people were crying angrily and cursing non-stop.

"That damn so-called priest is nothing but a complete fraud! I shouldn't have believed their lies. Give me back my hard-earned money!"

"I'm so old, and they tricked me into donating all my assets. What am I supposed to do now? Do I have to spend the rest of my life banging my head against a wall? How can people be so evil!"

"They promised to help me find a job paying fifty thousand dollars a month. But when I got there, I found out it was nothing but a sweatshop. The factory was filthy and they didn't even provide meals! It's just too terrible!"

The crowd kept shouting and complaining.

Emily stepped forward and immediately spotted the security guard from their neighborhood.

She raised her eyebrows in surprise, looking at the guard with some shock, "Why are you here too?"

"I..."

The guard rubbed his hands together with a hesitant expression, looking embarrassed as he met Emily's eyes.

After a long pause, he finally stammered in a low voice, "I just wanted to get a small benefit. I thought if I worked for them, they could upgrade my pension insurance by several levels. I never expected that after I quit my job to come to their church, they were planning to send me to work in a factory. My good job is gone, everything is ruined!"

People kept crying and shouting, and some were even threatening to kill themselves by running into the wall right there.

But Emily and William were police officers!

How could they watch someone commit suicide right in front of them?

This completely went against Emily's professional ethics. She quickly stepped forward and grabbed the old lady, "Even if you kill yourself now, it won't help! Don't do anything foolish!"

"Easy for you to say. What else can I do besides dying right now? My children and grandchildren have all disowned me. They blame me for listening to those people and donating our family property. But I didn't know they were scammers at the time! They said if I donated all my money, they would arrange a senior living apartment for me and give my family members high-paying jobs!"

The old lady stood there with a bitter expression, her face full of pain. Her lips kept trembling and her face was deathly pale.

Emily was about to say something more, but in a moment of carelessness, she didn't keep a close enough watch. The old lady suddenly rushed toward the church door!

At this critical moment, fortunately William acted quickly and stopped the old lady.

He said angrily in a cold, stern voice, "Making a scene now won't help. Seeking death is the most foolish behavior. What you need to do urgently is go to the police station to report this. Our police force will do everything we can to investigate."

Hearing William's words, many people turned around to look at them.

Since William and Emily had left home today without expecting to encounter such a situation, they naturally hadn't brought their work credentials.

"You say you're a police officer, so where's your ID? Show it to us!"

"Right, you have no proof. What if you're working together with Light Feather Church?"

"Even if you are police, so what? The people from this church have already run away."

"Everyone, please calm down!"

Emily quickly stepped forward, positioning herself in front of William. If she didn't protect William a bit, these people might tear him apart.

She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, "He really is a police officer. We can give you our badge numbers. If you don't believe us, you can check at the police station. But if you don't file a report, there's nothing we can do to help."

"Then we'll report it now. Can you help me get my money back? Please, officer, that's all my retirement savings. I have no children. I was counting on that money to live. Without my property and money, what am I going to do!"

The old person was extremely dejected, their voice mixed with sobs as they spoke.

To push an elderly person to such desperation showed they were truly at their wit's end.

But Emily clearly remembered that day when Everett was going to donate money to the priest, even willing to give away most of his assets to the priest. How did things end up like this?

Or was there some misunderstanding?

"You should go report this to the police first. We'll be waiting for everyone at the police station."

After William said this, he gave Emily a meaningful look, then got up and quickly walked toward the car.

Just as he was about to close the car door, he took one more glance at a door in the distance.

In just one night, the church closed and everyone from the church ran away?

This must be a long-planned conspiracy.

But what exactly were these people plotting, and when did this plan begin? This matter needed thorough investigation.

Emily got in the car, followed by many people—elderly men and women, as well as some middle-aged people who had lost their jobs and were struggling to support their families.

However, without exception, almost everyone told the same story.

They had somehow signed donation agreements, giving away all their property and assets under their names to Everett.

"These people, honestly speaking, don't really deserve sympathy. You know why? Because they were greedy for small benefits at first. They wanted to get high salaries from Light Feather Church, so they sold their family assets and signed donation agreements while they were completely clear-headed!"

William said bitterly, his handsome face full of anger.

That's how scammers work—they exploit people's desire for cheap deals and then bleed them dry!

What's most hateful is that the money flows to people who aren't short of money. So those who get scammed are mostly people with average family conditions, or those who have worked hard for years and always fantasize about getting rich overnight.

The less money people have, the more mentally impoverished they are, the easier they are to deceive.

"These people are absolutely heartless. They won't even spare these elderly people at their age."

William let out a long sigh and restlessly picked up a cigarette and lit it.

Actually, Emily rarely saw William smoke. This incident must have really upset him.

Emily bit her lip, "If we go by the law, they signed the agreements while conscious, so this case can't be considered illegal."
