Chapter 206

Chapter 206

Emily naturally wouldn't say anything to Delilah. This was her job, after all.

Getting useful evidence from Bronte through interrogation as soon as possible was the top priority.

When Emily arrived outside Bronte's interrogation room, before she could even enter, she spotted a familiar figure coming out.

William's face was dark and gloomy, practically radiating anger. He shot a cold glance back at Bronte, and before he could say anything, Emily appeared right in front of him.

Although Emily hadn't had a chance to coordinate work matters with William yet, she could pretty much guess why he was looking so upset.

He probably got nowhere with Bronte.

"I'll go in with you."

William blurted out.

Emily shook her head, "I'll handle this alone. You go take care of your other work."

She gave William a look, signaling that she'd stay behind, and if he wanted to listen in, he could go to the adjacent room.

After all, with a psychologically twisted criminal like Bronte, who knew what shocking things she might do.

Today Bronte had specifically asked to see Emily, even saying she would only tell her the truth. So William staying wouldn't do much good anyway.

When Bronte saw Emily enter, a faint smile spread across her face, and she kept glancing toward the door.

The moment Emily closed the door, Bronte spoke frankly, "Actually, Officer Johnson, you really don't need to waste time on me. No matter how much you investigate, at most I'm guilty of harboring a criminal."

"Bronte, stop making excuses. We have all the evidence we need about what you've done, including the secrets in your hidden room. You probably don't know this yet, but your right-hand man, Mole—we've already arrested him. Unfortunately, he poisoned himself on the way to the station."

Emily sat down calmly, examining Bronte with scrutinizing eyes.

In the observation room next door sat a group of people.

Delilah held her tea cup, watching Bronte's face, and said casually, "Bronte's eyebrows are furrowed. From her micro-expressions, she's actually panicking now. She's scared. Look, Bronte's grabbing her pants!"

"Of course she's been off ever since she learned we caught Mole."

Daniel let out a long breath, completely focused, calmly watching the activity in the interrogation room next door.

Fortunately, they had already searched Bronte thoroughly and found nothing on her, so attacking Emily or copying her associate Mole by poisoning herself was impossible now.

Emily folded her hands, nodding calmly, "Of course, you can keep playing dumb, pretending you don't know anything. But since we have evidence of your crimes, we definitely won't let you escape legal punishment!"

Hearing Emily say this, Bronte burst into wild laughter.

She looked at Emily with mockery in her eyes, "Officer Johnson, if a few teachers at our welfare home owing debts counts as evidence of the director committing crimes, then I think there are tons of criminals in this world—you could never arrest them all!"

Bronte's psychological resilience was unexpectedly strong!

Far beyond what Emily had anticipated.

Emily sighed, lightly tapping the table with her fingers, "I actually understand you. Born poor, only thinking about how to get ahead. For a girl from a poor family, just being sensible isn't enough. I heard your first husband had a habit of domestic violence?"

"What nonsense are you talking about? I don't have any husband. I haven't even been in a relationship!"

Bronte glared at Emily furiously, even shouting without thinking, "If you want to make up stories about me, slander me, and put me in jail, say whatever you want. I'm not Bronte at all. That's my attitude!"

"Don't rush. Your third husband Mole—his real name should be Jake Sherman, right? I really don't understand—you're so beautiful, you have so much money, you're such a smart woman, why would you choose a man like Jake?"

She narrowed her eyes, staring straight at Bronte, her words full of shock and surprise.

No matter how you looked at it, Bronte shouldn't have fallen for someone like Mole.

Mole was a naturally disabled dwarf, looking only as big as an eight or nine-year-old child.

If Emily didn't regularly work with bodies and couldn't read the muscle lines on his face, it would be hard to tell that this Jake was actually a middle-aged man in his thirties.

Sure enough, when the station sent Jake to the hospital today to check his bone density, the results completely confirmed Emily's guess.

She had expected this—if Mole wasn't a core member of their group, how could Bronte trust him to keep the children by his side?

"I have no idea what you're talking about!"

Bronte raised her voice again, staring at Emily with bloodshot eyes.

She wouldn't answer, just kept refuting Emily. But that was fine.

Emily tilted her head, sitting lazily in her chair, and after a long breath, continued, "You wouldn't have developed some kind of sick interest because your son died before, would you? Otherwise, what normal woman would be attracted to Jake? He really does look like a mole—ugly!"

"Enough!"

Bronte couldn't take it anymore and roared furiously.

In the observation room next door, excitement erupted with continuous exclamations.

Everyone looked toward Emily.

"My god, Bronte's so worked up right now—that means Mole being her husband is probably true. Otherwise why would she be so angry?"

Delilah distributed the snacks she was holding to everyone.

Joshua shook his head, pointing at Bronte in the next room, saying quietly, "Even if she's emotional now, if she doesn't confess voluntarily, we still can't do anything. The law requires evidence for everything. It's not like it used to be."

Decades ago, violent interrogation was still allowed.

After all, with such vicious people as Bronte's group, ordinary people could hardly keep their cool or have the patience to deal with them, let alone sit down and carefully listen to Bronte's excuses.

Emily's ability to hold her temper until now without losing it was really impressive.

Daniel weakly gave a thumbs up in Emily's direction, "Officer Johnson really has it tough for her work!"
