Chapter 205
Chapter 205
Emily listened to Olivia's words, a mischievous smile spreading across her face, "You're the one who insisted on coming out to eat with me. Don't tell me you've forgotten what I do for a living, O!"
"Alright, I'll take you to try this spa later. I heard they use real volcanic stones. I saw tons of people recommending it online before I came back to the country. What I've missed most during this time is coming home and enjoying life with you—that's what keeps me going at work."
Olivia opened her phone and pointed at the luxurious décor on the screen, exclaiming from time to time, "Business trips are just so exhausting and tiring!"
Emily felt the same way. More than just tiring—they could even be life-threatening.
As Olivia and Emily were about to leave together, Olivia went to the front to pay the bill.
Emily had just picked up her phone when Olivia pushed her hand away, "Come on, you make so little in a month. The whole point of me making money is so you and I can live the good life together, right? Why are you being so formal with me? Don't you consider me a friend anymore?"
Hearing this, Emily had no choice but to quietly put her phone away.
She gazed seriously into Olivia's eyes, "The greatest blessing of my life is knowing you. This is wonderful—from now on I can shamelessly leech off you and do whatever I want!"
"Absolutely! Relying on friends is way more reliable than relying on men!"
After paying, Olivia turned around with a cool, charming smile.
However, even when Emily arrived at the spa for her massage, she still seemed distracted and absent-minded.
Olivia could tell Emily had been out of it all day and couldn't help asking suspiciously, "Just how difficult is this case you're working on? Look at how stressed out you are!"
Emily rolled over and looked back at Olivia, "Do you know Everett?"
Olivia was clearly stunned by Emily's random question, "I've worked with him before, but it was to deal with him withholding workers' wages. No wonder people like him can get rich—it's disgusting. He took the workers' pay and wouldn't give it to them, and even tried to exploit legal loopholes. Oh, and there's one more thing!"
She suddenly remembered something and glanced at the beautician giving them massages, instructing, "Could you bring us two freshly squeezed juices first?"
In such a high-end beauty spa, they certainly wouldn't use cheap stuff—the juice would definitely be freshly squeezed!
So Olivia's words had another meaning—she wanted the two beauticians to leave first.
Once only Emily and Olivia remained in the large room.
She suddenly sat up and looked seriously into Emily's eyes, "Listen, do you remember that news story from before? The one about the accident at Everett's building materials market—a truck transporting steel suddenly lost control and crashed into a wall, then those steel pipes fell and killed five people. The driver died too."
Emily had heard something about this news. She remembered the media's comments about Everett at the time weren't very favorable.
There were even rumors that not only did he not plan to compensate anyone, but he also tried to use legal procedures to recover the loss of his goods.
In other words, Everett actually planned to make those poor workers and the families of the deceased compensate him for his losses.
"If you hadn't mentioned it, I really had forgotten. When I searched online a while ago, I couldn't find any dirt on him."
Emily suddenly sat up with a start.
She searched on her phone again—the internet looked like it had been completely wiped clean.
Now when you searched for Everett, the most common online opinion was that he was a great philanthropist, talking about all the charity work he'd done and how he'd even established charity schools.
This was absolutely ridiculous!
A person who expected dead people's families to compensate him for losses had somehow transformed into a great philanthropist that everyone praised!
Emily gasped, her eyes sharp as she stared directly at Olivia, "There's nothing online."
"Of course not. The PR team at his company—those people each make millions in annual salary. How could they possibly let Everett's dirt get exposed? It's probably all been deleted. But why are you suddenly asking about Everett?"
Olivia looked at Emily with confusion.
"Tell me, what could make someone like Everett become so superstitious that he'd even donate all his assets?"
Emily tilted her head, looking at Olivia with puzzlement in her eyes.
These questions had been weighing on her mind for too long, so much so that Emily desperately wanted a clear answer.
Olivia patted her shoulder with a smile, "That's simple! Something must have threatened his life. But how could Everett possibly be willing to donate all his assets?"
Olivia even wondered if Emily had read some fabricated news in some unreliable newspaper.
It wasn't until Emily mentioned the church that Olivia seemed to wake up, as if remembering something.
"Right, I remember now. I saw something online about this church a while back—something about Everett taking a bunch of people to the church for some baptism and blessing ceremony."
Olivia was excited.
However, Emily beside her still looked confused.
After all this analysis with Olivia today, she still had no leads.
Emily came out of the changing room fully dressed. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her phone in her pocket had over a dozen missed calls.
She answered suspiciously, her tone cold, "Delilah, what's wrong?"
"We broke through Bronte's psychological defenses today. She said she's willing to confess to her crimes, but only if you're the one questioning her!"
Delilah's tone was excited!
If they could make a breakthrough with Bronte, it meant they had a better chance of success.
Emily couldn't wait. She immediately headed for the exit. Olivia, following behind her, looked puzzled.
Olivia looked at Emily's retreating figure, "Seriously, Officer Johnson? Are you really that cold-hearted? I treated you to dinner and a spa today, and you're just going to abandon me and go back to work the moment we leave?"
"We'll talk later—I really need to get back right now!"
Emily looked at Olivia apologetically.
Olivia sighed helplessly, "At least wait for me. I'm not so cheap that I can't give you a ride. It's rush hour—who knows when you'd get there if you tried to catch a cab!"
By the time Emily got back to the station, it was already ten thirty at night.
The police station was brightly lit, with almost everyone on duty.
Seeing Emily come in, Delilah jogged over, "You're finally back. I don't know what's going on with Bronte—today she suddenly spoke up and said she'd confess to her crimes, but only if you're the one questioning her. I had no choice. Captain Brown said you were off today, and I didn't want to bother you."
Delilah's tone was full of guilt, and she couldn't even bring herself to look Emily in the eye.
