Chapter 6 I Wasn’t Sick

When Jasper brought Chloe to the birthday party, he had simply introduced her as his companion.
At the time, Chloe’d been disappointed.
She couldn’t believe Allison had just introduced her as his girlfriend like that.
What an idiot!
So when Dylan’s gaze fell on Chloe, her heart soared with triumph.
She was just about to stand politely and deliver some fake pleasantries when Dylan looked away–and right to Jasper instead. “I heard your 10–billion–dollar deal fell through. I know what you’re capable of, so what happened?”
Chloe jumped in to explain, “Don’t be upset, Sir Sterling. There was a good reason for that. Allie wasn’t feeling well, and Jasper rushed back to take care of her. That’s why the deal didn’t get signed. But I’m sure Allie didn’t mean for it to happen. After all, nobody wants to get sick.”
“You weren’t feeling well?” Dylan asked. “Was it serious?”
Chloe felt a surge of satisfaction as she waited for Allison to dig her own grave.
She’d set up the perfect trap. If Allison claimed she was sick20:51 Dylan would immediately press for details. What kind of

Chloe knew Allison wouldn’t dare say she’d been drugged. She had no proof.
Without evidence, it would just sound like she was making
excuses.
But if she said she was fine, Dylan would explode on the spot.
“I wasn’t sick.” Allison shrugged.
Hearing such a foolish answer from Allison, Chloe couldn’t help. but smile.
She should have just stuck with the sick story! At least that would have only annoyed the Sterlings instead of enraging them.
“You weren’t even sick, but you made Jasper drop a
10–billion–dollar deal to rush back here? Don’t you think that’s completely selfish?” Dylan was pissed.
“I had no idea Jasper was coming back. I only found out later that Chloe called him. It’s so weird. Why would she do that? And why did she say I was sick? Chloe, did you do this on purpose?” Allison looked confused and innocent as she asked.
Chloe never expected Allison to throw her under the bus like this. She quickly defended herself, “Sir Sterling, that’s not what happened! Allie really was sick at the time. Allie, I get that you feel bad about messing up that contract, but you can’t just lie
about it!”

“Allie, stop denying it. Just apologize to Sir Sterling and Jasper. They’ll forgive you.” Chloe acted like she was trying to help.
“You’re lying now? Is that what you’ve learned lately?” Jasper’s stare was ice–cold.
Allison felt like laughing at herself. Between her and Chloe,
Jasper would always believe Chloe. The man who’d watched her grow up was starting to question everything he thought he knew about her character.
Little by little, piece by piece, until he’d end up hating her completely.
“I was having coffee with Uncle Richard at the time. How could I have been sick?” Allison said calmly.
Everyone there was shocked.
Uncle Richard? Allison was having coffee with Richard?
Jasper’s face darkened instantly. “Do you even hear yourself right now? You really expect us to believe that bullshit?”
“Seriously, I heard Jasper’s uncle is some big shot in New York. Why would he have coffee with you? At least make your lies sound halfway believable,” Chloe chimed in.
“I’m telling the truth. You guys searched the whole manor for me, right? But you never checked the third floor, did you?” Allison shot back.

argue with her logic. Richard had already left for New York halfway through the birthday party anyway.
There was no one left to confirm or deny her story.
Or so she thought.
Just then, Richard walked into the reception room out of
nowhere.

His tall figure exuded an oppressive aura, cold and intimidating. The moment he entered the room, the presence of a man in power swept through the space.
When Dylan had entered earlier, everyone had stayed seated.
But the second Richard appeared, everyone except Dylan jumped to the
feet and greeted him.
Allison’s brain went completely blank, confusion washing over
her.
Wait, didn’t Richard leave? How is he back already?
Did he hear everything I just said?
Chloe jumped on the opportunity to get everyone on her side. “Allie claims she had coffee with you a few days ago. Mr. Sterling, did that actually happen? She’s totally lying, right? Come on, Allie, just tell the truth in front of Mr. Sterling! If you admit you made it up, we’ll all forgive you.”

She really had been on the third floor with Richard that day.
But it definitely wasn’t some coffee like she’d claimed.
Richard was way too sharp and perceptive. He’d obviously figured out what kind of mess she’d been in back then.
Once he exposed her lie, Chloe would definitely spill the truth about how she’d drugged herself trying to climb into Jasper’s bed.
Jasper’s face had already gone dark. He hadn’t even heard the truth yet, but he was already feeling humiliated.
Uncle Richard’s always been cold and distant, totally cut off from family stuff. Why would he ever have coffee with Allison? She’s not even related to the Sterling family.
Just as he was thinking exactly that, Richard’s voice cut through the tension. “Why couldn’t we?”
Everyone froze.
Allison wasn’t lying? How is that even possible? Why would Richard be having coffee with the Sterling family’s adopted daughter? They shouldn’t have anything to do with each other!
