The Flight With Adam
The Flight With Adam
Chapter 131
Kim’s POV
I didn’t know why I’d been so skeptical of going to Germany before. Now that I thought about it, going to a new place and changing my environment were exactly what I needed.
And now that Mr. Jones was saying I could bring someone with me…
“What?” Ruby asked, giving me a look as her eyes shifted to my phone. I had paused our conversation to check Mr. Jones' message, and now I had something even better to tell her.
“You wouldn’t believe what happened.” I stifled my laugh, shifting my position on the bed as I dropped my phone.
Ruby’s eyes widened. “Tell me.”
“Oh no. You have to guess.”
Her mouth dropped open before she pressed it into a frown, making a sound of disapproval. “Aww, you know I’m terrible at guessing. They’re like a gazillion options, how am I supposed to get it right?”
“That I said you should guess doesn’t mean you must get it right.”
“But I want to get it right,” she whined, sounding like a two-year-old that had been deprived of sweets for far too long.
“Alright, alright. I’ll tell you. You don’t need to make a big deal out of it.”
Ruby giggled, like she had done her whole whining and frowning drama just to get me to tell her without making her guess. I just shook my head, silently wondering how I even managed to put up with her at times.
"Okay, so get this." I shifted even closer. “Mr. Jones told me that I can bring someone else to help me. In Germany."
Ruby’s brows flew up, but she didn’t say anything, obviously because she was waiting for me to carry on. “And of course there’s only one person I’m gonna bring,” I said in a sing-song manner, jabbing her shoulder with my finger.
She gasped. “Me?”
“Yes, you, silly.” I nudged her harder this time. “Come with me. There would be accommodations, and your pay is going to be two times the scrappy thing you get at Central Radio."
“Hey!” Ruby glared, feigning anger and putting her hands on her waist.
"Sorry." I pressed my lips together. “But you are gonna come right? Please?” I added, putting my hands together to plead with her, just in case she had plans before now.
“Girl, you don’t have to ask me twice! People literally want to be in my shoes; pretty, awesome hair, getting a free trip all the way to Germany—”
“Yeah, yeah. We get it,” I cut in before she would start listing all her special qualifications and beautiful features. “Now let’s start packing for Germany!”
Without wasting time, and with the excitement still pumping in our veins, we began packing our stuff. And then… we waited.
I didn’t even know three days could feel this long, but I didn’t even bother thinking about it. Not when the day had finally arrived.
I had agreed to go with Adam when Ruby suggested the idea three days ago. I realized it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. All we had to do was sit in one plane and fly to Germany together, right? Besides, it’d be nice to have some company, and if I had to be honest with myself, Adam has been nothing but sweet to me.
Unfortunately, there were only two seats on each row, so the three of us couldn’t sit together. One person had to sit in front or behind.
“Don’t worry, I’ll sit here.” Ruby said, gesturing to the row behind the one the two of us were assigned to. “I’ll fall asleep as soon as we get in the air, so I’ll be such a bore if you sit with me. Adam, on the other hand, will be wide awake.”
I narrowed my eyes at her as she returned my gaze. I could see through her schemes, but to be honest, I didn’t really care.
“Are you sure you’re okay with sitting with me?” Adam asked just as I settled in beside him. He let me have the seat closer to the window because I asked. He really was a little sweetheart.
"Sure, I’m sure,” I answered with a hand gesture, my gaze sweeping over him as I took in his comfortable outfit and tousled hair. “Why would you say that?”
“I don’t know." He let his gaze sweep over me, taking me in just like I had just done. “I just really got this vibe that you don’t really like being around me.”
My brows shot up, though there wasn’t just surprise in my tone. There was amusement too. “Really?”
“Yes, really.”
"Well, I’m sorry for making you feel that way.” I turned away, glancing out the windows before adding with a lower voice, “It wasn’t my intention.”
“Hmm, alright then.” I heard him reply. A somewhat comfortable silence settled between us as the plane took off after the attendants made sure everyone had their seatbelts on.
Then after a while, he asked, “First time flying?”
I turned to him. “Mmm, not really.” What on earth would have made him think that? “Do I really look that nervous to you?”
“Not really,” he said, echoing my reply. “Let’s just say…” He paused, staring up like he was in thought before bringing his gaze back to me with a smirk on his lips. “I’m curious to know more about you.”
I couldn’t hold back my smile. “Aww, that’s sweet.” Gosh, I could feel my face hurting just from how hard I was smiling. “Good luck with that.”
“Huh? What do you mean by that?”
“Nothing.” I shrugged lightly. “I’m just wishing you luck. Good luck with getting to know me.”
“You say it like I’m treading upon dangerous waters or something. Should I be scared or something?”
“Mmm, I don’t know.”
“And what? You don’t want to know more about me?” He sounded a bit offended, and my shoulders slumped as I let out a breathless laugh. Was it just me, or did he sound like a child begging for attention?
My attention.
"Well, I never said that,” I drawled, holding his gaze with a smile.
He let out a low chuckle, the sound vibrating in my ears as mirth danced in his eyes. We ended up holding each other’s gaze for a while before looking away.
We talked throughout the flight, and when we didn’t, there was silence between us. Sometimes it was comfortable, and sometimes it was filled with this tension I couldn’t handle—though I think that remained whether we talked or not.
Adam was just… something else.
We finally arrived in Germany, and the first thing I felt was the cool air hitting my face. Everything felt different and almost too perfect, like it was calling to me or something. The streets were even lined with old buildings that looked like they held stories in their walls.
Ruby and I arranged our stuff in the place given to us. I had expected a hotel, but this? This was way better. And of course more private.
We were still arranging our stuff when I received a text from Adam.
"Ouuu, is that from Adam?” Ruby squealed like she and my phone were somehow telepathically linked or something.
She had lied earlier. Yes, she was the type to fall asleep on the plane, but she stayed wide awake just so she would eavesdrop on my conversation with Adam. And now she was literally all over the place.
As she said, it was a text from Adam.
My heart stilled as I read it.
And he was asking me to come out for dinner with him.
I was already mentally preparing for the conversation I knew Ruby and I would have when she heard this.
But deep down, I knew I had already agreed to go.
