When Jett Didn’t Cross My Mind

When Jett Didn’t Cross My Mind
Chapter 132

Kim’s POV

A loud gasp ripped out of Ruby as she stared at me wide-eyed. “Oh my gosh. It is from Adam.”

Before I could even reply to that, she snatched my phone away from me. “Ruby! I didn’t even say anything yet.”

“Oh my God, he asked you to dinner.” She covered her mouth with her fingers, her gaze darting between me and my phone. “And… you were just about to say yes!”

“Ruby! Give me back my phone.”

“I knew you guys would look good together!” Ruby squealed even more, completely ignoring me as she jumped up and down like the immature being that she was.

“Ruby, if you make me say give me back my phone one more time, I’m going to tie your tongue to the back of your throat.”

That seemed to make her stop, and a smirk pulled at my lips at the frightened look on her face. I seized the opportunity, taking back my phone from her.

“So… what are you going to wear?”

“I don’t have time for your shenanigans, Ruby.” I sighed with an eye roll. “Besides,” I gestured towards the bunch of clothes and stuff splayed out on the bed, “we still have a lot of stuff to arrange.”

“Oh please, stop trying to change the topic.” She huffed, oblivious to the sharp glare I directed at her. “You’re finally going out with Adam! This is like… uh, what do they call it? A fantasy come true.” She swooned. “Adam is definitely going to explode.”

“Did you bump your head on the plane? Or did someone whack you in the skull on our way here?”

“Pfft. I’m perfectly fine.” She plopped on the bed, not caring about the clothes and stuff on it. She then leaned on her knees with her elbows, using her arms to hold her head up. “Now tell me how Adam makes you feel."

“Ugh. You do know that he’s just a rebound, right?” I finished putting the last of the pants I brought onto a hanger before putting it in the closet. “I don’t even consider this a date. So there’s no need for you to be getting excited when it’s literally nothing.”

"Well, it doesn’t look like anything to me.” She huffed once more, annoyed, but from the looks of it, she wasn’t planning on giving up anytime soon.

I blinked at her, slowly, and I was sure she could practically feel the displeasure oozing out of me—though there was a tiny part of me that did look forward to this date—but as usual, Ruby ignored all of that and began searching through the dresses on the bed, babbling about how I needed to look unreal for this.

“Girl, it’s just dinner. Relax. It’s not my wedding day or something.”

“Never say never, babygirl.”

I let out a low groan, tipping my head back. I didn’t have it in me to keep arguing with her, so I just decided to let her pick whatever she felt was right—though I still put down a few suggestions. Like I said before, it was a date, not my wedding.

A few hours later, we were finally done with arranging and getting me ready. I sat in front of the mirror blinking at my reflection as Ruby had taken it upon herself to get me ready.

"Hmm..." I got up from the chair so I could get a better look. “Not bad. I’ll give it a seven out of ten—”

“Ten out of ten. What do you mean?” Ruby cut me off before I could even finish. And I just shook my head, smiling to myself as I glanced at my reflection in the mirror again.

The pink dress hugged me just right, looking a bit casual and formal at the same time. Ruby had insisted on the soft curls, brushing them out until they fell perfectly over my shoulders, the subtle gloss on my lips catching the light.

Great. Now Adam was going to think I got dressed up just for him… though… that wasn’t quite far from the truth.

It didn’t take long before he came to pick me up. His fit was equally nice—dark pressed trousers, a crisped shirt, and rolled-up sleeves; he ditched the tie. Hmph. I guess he also dressed up for me.

Ruby was trying her hardest not to freak out. I’m sure if she could somehow fit into my purse, she would’ve done just that just so she could tag along with us.

“I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but you look extra beautiful tonight,” Adam said right after we had settled into the chic restaurant and given our orders.

My chest vibrated with a soft laugh as my gaze flicked around, taking in the beautiful scenery. “Yes, you did say it when you came to pick me up, but it’s okay.” I relaxed my hands on the table. “Like I said before, you look nice too.”

He leaned closer, mirroring my position. “Yeah, but I still can’t believe you’re on a date with me. I’m still like, trying to wrap my head around it.”

“Well… take your time.”

That made him laugh. "Well, I’m so glad you were there with Ruby; if not, I would’ve never met you." His eyes glinted with genuine happiness. “Matter of fact, I’m so glad I’m friends with Ruby." He placed a hand on his chest. “If not, I would’ve never met you. That girl has brought me luck more times than I can count.”

“Is that so?” My lips inched up as I tilted my head. “How did you even meet her anyway?”

I didn’t know whether I had done a good or terrible thing by asking that question. Because he wouldn’t stop talking, and don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining; I actually enjoyed listening to him.

And his little jokes.

He was funny and cute, I guess.

He told me all about how he had met Ruby and how they remained friends. At one point, it felt like he was just doing his best to impress me.

And maybe, just maybe, his charms were working.

We diverged from Ruby, talking about other things—likes, dislikes, past situations, funny situations, awkward moments, literally anything we could think of.

I was having so much fun and so lost in the conversation that Jett didn’t even cross my mind. And he was the one person I had been doing literally every damn thing possible to get out of my mind.

So then… maybe this was just what I needed.

A rebound.

I rested my face in my hands, food forgotten, as I listened to Adam talk.

Yeah… this was exactly what I needed.

We enjoyed our meal, and Adam took me back home, and I ended up thinking about him all through the night.

Thankfully, Ruby hadn’t been awake when I got back; if not, she wouldn’t have even let me into the house before she started teasing me. She must have been waiting for a while.

Which only meant that tomorrow morning, she was going to hit me with thousands of questions. Questions I didn’t want to answer and questions I didn’t even have answers to.

And just like I predicted, it was exactly what she did.

“Oh Ruby, it’s too early for this.” I groaned, still trying to get my shit together.

"Oh, come on, just tell me,” she nagged.

“I don’t have the energy for this, okay? Let's just head to the team’s space.”

I hadn’t expected her to shut up after that, but thankfully she did. Still, I had a feeling it wouldn’t last long.
