Chapter 744: Reaping What You Sow
"What do you mean there's nothing you can do? Save him now!" Rosalind shouted angrily at the doctor.
But as soon as the words left her mouth, she felt even more lost and helpless.
Seeing the doctor about to leave, she hurriedly grabbed his arm, lowering her voice to plead for Benjamin's condition. The doctor, however, simply shook his head with a resigned expression.
"We've tried everything possible. The test results aren't out yet, but his condition is visibly deteriorating. At this point, it's safe to prepare for the worst."
For someone already frail and teetering on the brink of life, losing a kidney was fatal.
"If he doesn't wake up today, you should prepare yourselves," the doctor said.
Rosalind felt as though the sky had fallen. Her mind was in chaos, and the word "panic" no longer sufficed to describe her state.
"What are you saying? Be clear!" she demanded, her voice trembling.
The doctor's tone made it sound like he was asking her to prepare for Benjamin's funeral. She couldn't accept it. How could her Benjamin, so young, be facing this?
Rosalind clung to the doctor, refusing to let him go, insisting he explain further. It wasn't until a nurse called security that she was pulled away.
Benjamin was moved to a hospital room. Rosalind sat by his bedside, her spirit completely shattered.
"What do I do? What do I do…" she muttered under her breath, wringing her hands and biting her lip, her voice trembling.
When Andrew called to ask where she and Benjamin were, she couldn't give him a coherent answer.
Hearing Rosalind repeatedly murmur "what do I do," Andrew had no choice but to head to the emergency department to find out himself.
Fortunately, Benjamin's case was unique, and Andrew quickly got the room number.
The moment he entered the room, he saw Rosalind's ashen face.
"Mom," he called out, concern evident in his voice.
Rosalind, however, seemed not to hear him, her vacant eyes fixed on Benjamin lying in the hospital bed.
Andrew ignored her silence and immediately checked the heart monitor. Noticing that Benjamin's heart rate was stable, he let out a sigh of relief.
"Mom, how's Benjamin? What did the doctors say?"
Having rushed there in a hurry, Andrew hadn't had time to ask the doctors about Benjamin's condition. Now, seeing both Benjamin and Rosalind, he finally had a chance to inquire.
Hearing Benjamin's name, Rosalind finally showed a trace of reaction.
"Save Benjamin! He can still be saved!" she murmured, assuming it was a doctor entering the room. She turned her head toward the door, only to see Andrew standing there.
Her eyes immediately reddened.
"Andrew!"
"I'm here, Mom," Andrew said quickly. "Benjamin will be fine."
But his words failed to comfort Rosalind.
She recalled the doctor's grim prognosis, which sent a chill through her heart. Then, thinking about how Thea had caused Benjamin's suffering, her sorrow turned into fury.
"Has Thea been arrested?" she demanded.
Andrew was startled by her sudden question. For a moment, he didn't know how to respond.
When Rosalind asked again, he quickly replied, "Thea has already been taken into custody. Alex is assisting with the investigation. She will face justice."
Andrew, like Rosalind, held deep resentment toward Thea.
Recalling that Thea had her liver removed as part of her punishment, Andrew added, "Mom, they took part of Thea's liver. She's paying for her actions."
It was a piece of news meant to offer some consolation, but Rosalind found no satisfaction in it.
"Thea, that wretched woman! She deserves the death penalty!" she spat, her voice shaking with hatred.
Benjamin had been issued a critical condition notice and was now on the verge of death. Each of these things alone was enough to make Rosalind wish Thea would die immediately.
"Death penalty…" Andrew frowned.
Though he hadn't been directly involved, he knew it was unlikely Thea would face such a sentence.
He glanced at Benjamin lying on the bed, then cautiously asked Rosalind, "Mom, did the doctors say when Benjamin might wake up?"
Hearing Andrew's question, Rosalind's emotions suddenly erupted.
"My poor son!"
Tears streamed down her face as Rosalind shot up from her chair, about to throw herself onto Benjamin's bed.
"Mom!" Andrew quickly stepped forward to stop her.
Although he didn't fully understand Benjamin's current condition, he knew Rosalind couldn't recklessly touch him.
"Benjamin still has surgical wounds. Be careful!" he warned.
If Rosalind accidentally caused his incision to open, it could lead to a critical situation.
Hearing Andrew's words, Rosalind hesitated.
The doctor had already told her to prepare for Benjamin's death. What else was there to fear?
But Andrew's reminder about his surgical wounds brought her back to her senses. If she caused him to bleed out, it would only worsen his already dire state.
A wave of regret and fear washed over her.
Instead of collapsing onto Benjamin, she slumped onto Andrew, her grief pouring out in sobs.
Andrew instinctively caught her, steadying her trembling frame. Hearing her cry on his shoulder filled him with unease.
"Mom, tell me-what exactly is going on with Benjamin?"
By now, Andrew realized the situation might be far worse than the heart monitor suggested.
Benjamin's condition had to be critical, or Rosalind wouldn't be this distraught.
Through her tears, Rosalind stammered, "Benjamin… he… Benjamin…"
Andrew listened patiently but couldn't make sense of her fragmented words. His anxiety grew.
He gently reassured her, "Mom, take your time. Tell me everything."
After a while, Rosalind finally managed to form a complete sentence.
"The doctor said… if Benjamin doesn't wake up today, then… then…"
She couldn't finish the sentence.
Andrew didn't need her to. He understood the implication immediately.
But understanding was one thing; accepting it was another.
He refused to believe this outcome.
Glancing at Benjamin, then at the stable heart monitor, he couldn't shake the feeling that Rosalind might have misunderstood the doctor's words.
"I'll go ask the doctor myself," he said firmly.
Before leaving, Andrew helped Rosalind to a chair, ensuring she was far enough from the bed to avoid any accidental harm to Benjamin.
"Mom, wait here for me. I'll speak to the doctor again."
Rosalind didn't stop him. In fact, she urged him, "Andrew, please beg them to save Benjamin."
Andrew nodded and left in a hurry.
Rosalind remained in the room, anxiously watching Benjamin from a distance. Her heart was heavy with dread.
