Chapter 743: Settling the Score
"Do you want to know what kind of surgery you had?" Alex asked coldly, his voice cutting through the tense silence.
Thea clung to his words like a drowning person grasping at a lifeline. She struggled, trying to move closer to Alex. "Tell me! Tell me now!" she begged, her voice trembling with desperation.
Her face was pale as death, her expression one of utter panic. No matter how hard Thea struggled, she barely managed to move. Andrew, ever watchful, stood guard in front of Benjamin, blocking her path with unwavering determination. He had no intention of letting her get anywhere near Benjamin.
As Thea's frantic cries echoed in the room, Alex finally spoke again. "When the police arrive, you'll know everything."
Everyone present couldn't help but notice Thea's deteriorating condition. Her pale, lifeless appearance was far too obvious to ignore. With just one glance, Andrew could tell that whatever surgery Thea had undergone, it wasn't a simple or beneficial one. He suspected the worst.
"Who knows?" Andrew said bluntly, his face cold. "Maybe they took an organ from you. But even so, you can still live without it."
His tone was laced with disdain. Thea had to stay alive-after all, they still had a score to settle with her for what she had done to Benjamin.
"You're lying!" Thea shrieked, her voice cracking. "They wouldn't… they couldn't… they…" Her words faltered as a sharp pain ripped through her body, leaving her unable to continue. She looked utterly defeated, her face ashen and lifeless.
For a brief moment, she seemed to calm down, but the stillness didn't last long. Suddenly, like a person possessed, she tried to wheel herself out of the room, desperate to find a doctor and demand answers. This time, Andrew didn't stop her. But before Thea could even reach the door, the police and an ambulance arrived simultaneously.
Alex quickly explained the situation to the authorities, and Benjamin was immediately taken away by the paramedics. Rosalind, unable to rest easy, followed after him. Meanwhile, Thea sat there, pale and trembling, unnoticed and ignored.
The police wasted no time getting to work, questioning everyone present and even summoning the doctors from the hospital. It was during this interrogation that Thea finally learned the truth about her surgery.
Her liver had been partially removed.
Not only had she failed to receive Benjamin's kidney, but she had also lost part of her own liver.
When she heard the revelation, Thea nearly passed out. "How could you?!" she screamed. "How dare you take my liver without my consent?!"
One of the doctors brought in by the police looked at Thea, his expression calm and composed. "Miss Hayes, you signed the donation agreement yourself. The document is still here."
Thea's eyes widened in disbelief. "That's impossible! I would never sign something like that! I… I signed…" Her voice faltered, and she suddenly clamped a hand over her mouth in horror.
She remembered now. She hadn't bothered to read the agreement carefully when she signed it. She had blindly trusted the clinic and its doctors.
Seeing her panic, Alex exchanged a glance with Andrew. Understanding his brother's intent, Andrew pulled out an agreement Benjamin had signed and handed it to Alex. Alex took one look at the document before turning to Thea.
"Is this the one you signed?" he asked, pointing to the signature.
The content of the agreement was thorough and precise, but the signature unmistakably matched Thea's handwriting. Something was clearly amiss.
Thea didn't respond. She curled up in her wheelchair, her body racked with pain and drenched in cold sweat. "I need a doctor," she whimpered. "I don't feel well."
Alex's expression remained impassive, devoid of sympathy. Andrew's face was just as cold. They had endured too much of Thea's manipulations to believe her now. To them, this was just another one of her ploys to dodge responsibility.
But no matter how well Thea acted, she couldn't escape the truth this time. They wouldn't fall for her tricks again.
"What's wrong with her?" one of the police officers asked the doctor, noticing Thea's pitiful state.
The doctor, assuming he was being questioned about his actions, grew nervous and quickly explained, "We only removed part of her liver. It shouldn't have significant effects on her body. The liver is regenerative, so-"
"That's not what I'm asking," the officer interrupted. "I'm asking about her current condition."
The doctor hesitated before approaching Thea to assess her state. But as he drew closer, Thea flinched and shrank away, screaming, "Get away from me! Don't come near me! I won't let you hurt me again!"
She looked utterly disheveled-hair in wild disarray, hospital gown rumpled and wrinkled. Her frail body was curled up in the wheelchair, trembling like a cornered animal.
"She doesn't seem to be in any real danger," the doctor finally said, stepping back.
Everyone else silently agreed. After all, no one who was truly unwell could scream and thrash with such intensity.
"Take her to the station," one of the officers ordered.
With that, the group set off for the police station.

Meanwhile, Alex urged Andrew to head to the central hospital to be with Rosalind. He was worried that if anything happened to Benjamin, Rosalind might lose her composure. With Andrew there, Alex could rest a little easier.
The two brothers went their separate ways. Andrew rushed to the hospital, where Rosalind was anxiously waiting outside the emergency room. Not long ago, Benjamin had been wheeled in, and the hospital had issued a critical condition notice. Rosalind had signed the papers with trembling hands and hadn't moved from her spot since.
Her heart was heavy with dread. Her eyelids twitched uncontrollably, a bad omen gnawing at her nerves. Pressing her fingers to her temples, she tried to maintain a façade of calm, but the anxiety bubbling beneath the surface was impossible to suppress.
When the doors to the emergency room finally opened, Rosalind sprang to her feet, rushing forward to meet the medical staff. "How is Benjamin? Is he awake? Is he going to be okay?" she fired off her questions in rapid succession, her voice frantic.
A nurse stepped out first, trying to calm her. "Please, ma'am, stay calm."
But Rosalind couldn't calm down. Ignoring the nurse, she turned to the doctor who emerged next, grabbing him by the arm. "Doctor! Tell me-did Benjamin wake up? How is he?"
The doctor paused, gently moving her aside to clear the way for the surgical team. Rosalind's eyes followed the stretcher being wheeled out of the room. On it lay Benjamin, his eyes still closed.
"Doctor, please!" Rosalind begged. "Tell me what's happening to him!"
The doctor glanced at Benjamin's unconscious form before speaking. "I'm sorry. We did everything we could."
