Chapter 576 Forced to Make Me Swear

Chapter 576 Forced to Make Me Swear

After going downstairs, Bob, Amelia, and Grace each drove their own cars straight to Evergreen Hospital, while I sat in the back of the ambulance, staying by Chloe's side the whole time.

After arriving at Evergreen Hospital, Bob had just finished the admission procedures when a series of tests and scans began.

Since the hospital was crowded, it took until around 6 PM to complete the ultrasound, X-ray, ECG, EEG, and MRI.

Luckily, Bob knew people at the hospital, and the TV station leaders also came over. Olivia rushed over after getting off work in the afternoon too.

They were all part of the same system as the hospital, and they even managed to skip ahead in some lines. Otherwise, who knows how late it would have been.

After all the tests, apart from a fractured thigh bone, no other internal organs were damaged.

Back in the ward, the doctor prescribed several IV drips, which apparently needed to run all night.

The traffic police first called Grace, then came over to take statements from both Grace and Chloe separately.

After everything was settled, it was around 8 PM, and none of us had eaten all day.

Bob was always generous with money. Seeing we'd been busy all day, he immediately called The Garden Eatery hotel to order food and reserved a private room.

Just as we were about to leave, Chloe specifically asked me to stay with her, saying she was scared.

This was awkward. I looked at Bob, not knowing what to do.

Grace and Olivia also seemed embarrassed. After all, they both knew the baby Chloe miscarried was mine, and what she wanted most now was for me to stay by her side. But making such a request in front of Bob—wasn't that basically giving everything away?

Bob didn't think that much about it though. He just assumed that since I often played with Jasper, Chloe had a better impression of me than most people. Plus, since the accident was caused by some thugs, even though the police were involved, he was worried they might suddenly show up at the hospital. Having me stay not only put Bob at ease, but he also thought it was quite necessary.

"Nolan, you should stay," Bob said to me. "Take good care of Chloe. If anything happens, call me right away. We'll bring food back for you."

Since he said so, I had good reason to stay.

Chloe was something else. They had barely left—I don't think they'd even reached the elevator—when Chloe waved me over, gesturing for me to sit by the bed.

As soon as I sat down, she pulled me close, turned and buried herself in my arms, and started crying again.

I quickly glanced at the glass window on the door, afraid Bob might come back. Fortunately, he didn't appear for a while, so they must have left already.

Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief. I patted Chloe's shoulder and said, "Stop crying. Focus on getting better. We're still young—there will be plenty of opportunities in the future."

But Chloe cried, "Nolan, you have to promise me, you can marry anyone in this life, just don't marry Grace!"

"You're overthinking this. How old am I? I'm nowhere near ready to talk about marriage."

"I don't care. I want you to swear to me that no matter what, you won't marry Grace in this lifetime!"

Chloe seemed to have lost it, but this was understandable. For a woman, the greatest pain in the world is losing her child.

And I asked myself honestly—if I didn't have that kind of relationship with Grace, right now, never mind the person who caused the accident, I'd probably hate Grace too.

"You really are overthinking this. I've never thought about marrying Grace. Just rest well. We'll talk about everything after you recover."

In the past, I was a complete materialist. Forget making vows—I could say anything with conviction.

But now it's different. I've been practicing Internal Alchemy, and I can even see some vengeful spirits, so I somewhat believe in phenomena that science can't explain.

Because of this, I didn't dare make random vows. I was genuinely afraid of being struck by lightning.

"I don't care. You just can't marry her in this lifetime! And another thing," Chloe suddenly looked up, her eyes full of murderous intent as she said to me, "You absolutely cannot let her get pregnant with your child. Otherwise, I'll kill her!"

Women can be really crazy when they seek revenge, huh?

I held Chloe tightly, patting her back while trying to calm her down. "Baby, why are you suddenly like this? This really was just an accident. Don't let hatred cloud your judgment. In this state, I'm really worried about your health."

But Chloe sobbed, "You're the one whose judgment is clouded by her, okay? She clearly wanted to harm our child, and you're still defending her?"

"Alright, alright, I won't defend her anymore. But this ends here. I don't want you to repeat what you just said to anyone else, especially Bob. Do you hear me?"

Chloe pressed her face tightly against my chest and nodded hard. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. I just wanted to tell you that Grace did it on purpose. Even if you won't avenge our child, you can't let her be happy, right?"

Chloe was beyond reason at this point. I didn't want to try to persuade her anymore, so I just held her.

Chloe must have been exhausted today, plus the effect of the IV medication. After a while, she actually fell asleep.

I gently laid her down flat, and during this time, I had a nurse come in to change the IV bag. Then I sat quietly by the bed watching her, when a strange thought suddenly popped into my head: Could Grace really have wanted to harm the baby in her belly?

Although I kept telling myself this was absolutely impossible, I believed in Chloe's sixth sense.

From early this morning, Chloe had been showing off in front of Grace. Even if Grace was very tolerant, she probably couldn't stand Chloe's flaunting.

More importantly, might Grace really be worried that once Chloe gave birth to my child, she would cling to me forever?

Of course, even if Grace resented Chloe and the baby in her belly, wishing something would happen to them, today's traffic accident really was an accident. Grace couldn't have conspired with those thugs—if she had, that would be murder. Thinking of this, I felt a chill down my spine. I still firmly believed Grace would never be that narrow-minded. This accident really was just an accident. Especially me—I absolutely shouldn't suspect Grace.

About an hour later, Bob and the others came back with food for me.

Although Bob hired a caregiver, he decided to stay at the hospital the first night and let us go home first.

I was a bit worried about Chloe's condition. First, I was afraid she'd wake up and couldn't help telling Bob all her suspicions about Grace. Second, she was extremely weak now. If she called out my name in her dreams, or insisted on finding me when she woke up, that would be really awkward.

I looked at Olivia somewhat helplessly, feeling that at this moment, only she could help me.
